Summary: A good war movie. A bad history lesson
Review: The good: As a war movie, it was very good. The battle scenes were realistic (in one ball-rolling case, too realistic!!!!), and the way in which the war progressed was accurate(although one battle had too many Continental troops, and not enough militia), with the British winning at first, but then being forced back and losing at Yorktown. Also, the way in which the Americans used skirmish tactics, and the involvement of the French, is also accurate.

The bad: Mel Mel Mel. What is it with you and the truth? In real life, the British gave quarter at every oppertunity, didn't burn chruches full of civilians, and didn't hunt down the families of American troops. Yet Mel has them one step away from eating babies and ravaging the womenfolk! Also, the black people in the film are happy-go-lucky. In reality, they joined the British at every chance in order to escape their harsh masters. Also, the main character was, in real-life, a vicious racist, who raped his slaves.

Basically, all I can say is this. This film is quite good. If Mel Gobson wasn't in it, it could have matched Private Ryan. Sorry Mel, but because of you, this film doesn't live up to it's potential.

Summary: Great movie, one of Mel Gibson's best.
Review: I just saw this movie and I was blown away! It's one of Mel Gibson's best. It is not as good as Braveheart, but it comes close. This is a movie about a man unwilling to go to war against the British because of past brutality he commited during the French Indian War. But his son goes to war and the father realizes he should too. So they recruit local men to help them fight and they become queit formidable. This is the best American Revolution movie I have ever seen, although it is not a true story. Check this movie out, you will wish you had sooner.

Summary: Sick and Gratuitous
Review: ...in which a very demented British soldier leads a very demented British army to senselessly slaughter everyone that you are made to care about in this half sappily cliched, half grotesquly sadistic waste of time. The bad guy(s) here make Hitler and the Nazis seem like Josie and the Pussycats, as is usually the case in a film such as this, but the sickening slaughter goes so far past the point needed for a dramatic setup (i.e. bad guys bad enough that you want to see their comeuppence, which is just fine) that you start to question the motivation, even the sanity, of the film's creators. By the end, pretty much all that is left is Mel and a bunch of dead people, and this film seems to think that there's not a single thing wrong with that. Their mistake.

Summary: Mel and War go together like Peas and Carrots.
Review: Mel Gibson ("Braveheart", "Ransom" and "Lethal Weapon") has done it again. He proved his Critics wrong and made another war film that has all the same ingredients as "Braveheart", and it turned out Just as Enjoyable. (I think it's even more enjoyable as it has more light moments than "Braveheart")

Mel plays Benjamin Martin, an Ex-Military turned Family man. His wife is dead but the family is happy, that is until his oldest son Gabriel (Aussie boy Heath Ledger) signs up to take up arms against the Invading British. Benjamin's choice between Patriotism and Family is most Assuredly Family, but when an Evil British Coronal Tavington (Jason Isaacs "Event Horizon", "Soldier" and "Sweet November") Involves his family in the war, Benjamin leads a Militia group against the British and he Again becomes a Patriot.

If "The Patriot" had used the same Promotion lines that "Gladiator" used, it would say "The Father.. Who Became a Ghost.. Who Defied a King.. Who Became a Patriot". (in case you haven't seen it, the people call him a Ghost, because he moves like one) Fans of "Braveheart" and "Gladiator" will eat it up with a Spoon, it is a Classic war film that makes you Laugh, Cry, Cheer, Curse and Applaud until you hands hurt.

Mel carries this Epic, he seems to be able to Spit out these Oscar-worthy performances with the Upmost of ease. Heath Ledger ("10 Things I Hate About You", "A Knight's Tale" and "Two Hands") make the leap from Teen Heartthrob to Big Screen Heavyweight with his Gabriel, he makes him Ultra-Believable and Infinitely Likeable. Jason Isaac Relishes his Hateable Villain role, Every Smirk made me want to Strangle the man, so Obviously, he did a Very Good Job.

The Large supporting cast give All they've Got to their roles. Standouts include Tom Wilkinson ("The Full Monty" and "The Ghost and the Darkness"), Chris Cooper ("American Beauty", "October Sky" and "Money Train") and Tcheky Karyo ("Nikita", "Wing Commander" and "Bad Boys"). The Biggest Standout in my opinion is the Young Actor who plays Benjamin's son Thomas (he also stars in Joe Dante's Underrated film "Small Soldiers"). He is Wonderful in his role, Every time he is on screen, he just Grabs my attention, even away from Mel.

Roland Emmerich proves himself a Serious Director after a career of Sci-fi, Special Effects ridden features ("Universal Soldier", "Stargate", "Independence Day" and "Godzilla"). He Directs the film with the Passion of a Patriot, even though he was not born in America (much like Wolfgang Peterson, director of such American Flag-Wavers as "In the Line of Fire" and "Air Force One"). "The Patriot" makes a Great Companion piece to "Braveheart" and a Perfect Addition to the Collection of All Fans of War Films.

Summary: This was a great movie.
Review: I won't go into the plot, because by now, you know it. But if you like war movies about honor, tragedy and redemption, you'll like this movie. For those who complain about the historical accuracy, you need to get out of the library more. And to those who complain that it's an American-flag waving movie...well, as my 8 year-old says...DUH! The dang movie is called The Patriot for crying-out-loud.

Summary: The Patriot
Review: The Patriot is a sprawling, beautiful war drama directed by Roland Emmerich (!) and starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, and Jason Isaacs. It is 1776, colonial Soth Carolina. The nation is engulfed in war fever. Benjamin Martin (Gibson) is a plantation owner and hero of The French and Indian War with seven children and a dead wife. Yet Martin does not want to fight, haunted by his past and worried about his family. Yet his eldest son Gabriel (Ledger) enlists and all is well back at home until Gabriel returns home wounded. Soon redcoats arrive at his home, eventually killing his son Thomas, and he wants revenge. As for acting, Gibson gives a charismatic performance and Ledger does a fine job. While Jason Isaacs plays his character very well (a sadistic British colonel) Emmerich and Rodat give him cartoonish treatment, making him unrealistic and almost indestrucible. He probably would have died when he was first shot, and gets shot in the arm then picks up a dagger and fights like his arm had never been touched! Yet Emmercich does succeed in vividly recreating colonial South Carolina, with sumptuous photography from Caleb Deschanel, and John Williams' music is excellent. Most of the battle scenes are impressive, esp. the ending and the trap w. dragoons but the attack on the convoy that holds Gabriel captive is entertaining yet silly. While it's possible his sons could shoot that well, there's no way those soldiers would have sat there like statues while Gibson took them one by one.Overall, The Partiot is a sweeping, spectacular war drama that delivers.

Summary: The Patriot a good movie not great, but good.
Review: this movie was a good movie. as i watched this with my other freind most of the time we were in suspense. the good thing about this film is that most of the time the things that you didnt expect to happen, happened. I can list 4 good things about this movie and 4 not so good. GOOD THINGS 1, It was a realistic way of showing the American REvoulutionary War. 2, it told a story behind the brutality in it. 3, the casting was very good. 4, it kept you into it throughout the whole time. BAD THINGS 1, It was a bit overly long. 2, You could really tell that graphics were out in. 3, it didnt really mention Thomas after he was killed. 4, some parts were a little bit overly brutal.

Summary: This is a good movie, BUT ....
Review: But it lacks heavily on the historical facts and for the life of me I can't figure out why Mel Gibson is being cast as the Patriot and he is an Aussy ... not very patriotic of the producer if you ask me. But then again he did play a Scotman (Braveheart) too. However, be that as it may the film is well done and the acting is not bad either, the war scenes are great and overall this is a guy flick, nothing to take a date too or rent and not recommended for the young one in the house. Unless you like explaining where the man head went etc. Other than lacking in fact, as everyone is way to clean to be the 1770's and that is just a basic error and I'm not about to make the list of all the problems, but hey it's a movie not a history lesson. Just keep that in mind and you'll enjoy it. Not to rune the ending for you, but the Americans won! Yeah!!!
