Rating: Summary: i wonder why.... Review: i wonder how come none of he reviews on this page actuallt talk about the movie. they just go on and on about the Vietnam war and why it was bad when the main purpose of writing the review is to talk about the movie. oh yeah, i do believe "Vietnam" is one word. V-e-i-t-n-a-m. If your going to ramble on about it you might as well spell it right
Rating: Summary: Excellent, thought-provoking. Review: I grew up just a few years younger than the young men and women who were being sent to Viet Nam to fight. Seeing this movie takes me back to that time, when here in America there was truly alot of prosperity and peace, or so we thought. The Viet Nam war was pretty much kept behind the scenes by government and media. I feel guilty now, when I look back and realize what a great time the rest of us were having here, while these young guys were having their whole lives destroyed for nothing! I wish I could go back, and have made a difference, I wish I could have eased just a little of the suffering. I think most of the reviews here must have been written by people of a later generation. They just cannot understand the innocence that was lost during that period of time in America. They see the aftermath, and accept it as the was it has always been, but that is not the case. Cruise's character said it best when after fighting in the wheelchairs and falling down the hill, he talks to Charlie about the was it used to be, well, that is the way it used to be. The war changed so much about our country, it took the innocence forever.
Rating: Summary: Quite disapointing! Review: I do not watch many films and as such I had never seen this. When I do watch a film, I try to select only the best. So when a respected friend of mine of the Viet Nam generation told me about showing it to this to his 18 year old son, I decided to watch it also. I was quite disapointed. I thought that the film was overacted, and the extensive use of the "F-word" distracting. I could not help but feel sorry for Tom Cruies' character, but at times he appeared like a "poor little ole-me drunk". I could not but help identify with X-marine who told him to get his act together with refernece to Iwo Gima. Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to minimize the trama that Viet Nam vets went through. And these people deserve our respect. But Tom Hank's character in Saving Private Ryan caught the gutwretching reality of war much better and with greater respect as he quietly pondered the lives lost of those under his command. If Stone could have turned down the volume and avoided such politically motivated fictionalizations (e.g., protest on the republican convention floor), the movie would have been much better and communicated a far more sensitve truth. The movie demeans these veterens who deserve far better for the horrors they had to endure.
Rating: Summary: The dark face of war Review: No matter how great the victory is, the dark side always remains. Mankind has become the victim of the monster - WAR - it has created. Here we can realize that superpowers, arms of the highest technology, even the wealth of any nation... all unable to turn a disabled man into a walking, healthy man he used to be. This movie is a symbol of the hopelessness, depression of young men whose only fault is to have been born in the areas of war, so they have to carry the burden, paying the highest price, which is either the life or the meaning of life, killing them every second until they will find their ways into their graves, like we witness in this movie. Not to mention the innocent victims. If, we, human beings, cannot do without wars or arms because of the present circumstances, so destroy the healthy lives, what does our stupid conflicts over abortion, euthanasia, etc , in the name of religions, or other so-called holy concepts mean? Maybe yes to the dark side of the war , but NO to hypocrisy.
Rating: Summary: Acting GREAT : Movie NOT SO GREAT Review: The Acting of Tom Cruise was absolutely wonderful! The facts and Chronilogical order of the Vietnam Conflict should have been researched instead of created. Acting of Cruise was GREAT the movie itself WAS NOT.
Rating: Summary: Not as bad as Saving Private Ryan Review: I saw this movie in the theater and I fell asleep through the whole movie. Saving Private Ryan is my least favorite movie. This movie was terrible and I don't want to say this but Tom Cruise had bad acting in the movie and I have to give this movie one star because it was one of the worst war movies I have ever seen. If I were you don't even rent or buy this movie it's terrible.
Rating: Summary: Born on the fourth of July Review: If you want good war scenes watch Saving Private Ryan, if you want a typical "I went to war so feel sorry for me" plot, watch this movie.
Rating: Summary: absolutly amazing Review: i thought this movie was absolutly wonderful it deals with the real emotions that many may have Tom Cruises performance is one im not soon to forget.a must see movie
Rating: Summary: Excellent film despite inaccuracy Review: It is difficult to review films when they claim to be true stories or try to reflect on history in an accurate sense. Do you review the film in a nutshell, or do you review it's relevance to the subject it is referring to ? If you review according to accuracy, you would have to give this a 2 or 3 at the most. BUT, the film is excellent. Tom Cruise won me over with this role. The boy can really act ! He was absolutely brilliant and I don't think he has matched this performance to this date in any other film. The story is moving and at times disturbing when faced with the reality of a young man trying to live and deal with severe injuries aswell as his Vietnam experiences. A brilliant film which does not deserve to be panned due to it's obvious historical flaws.
Rating: Summary: Better Than Platoon Review: Although many call this movie flawed and inaccurate, I consider it Oliver Stone's best film. I am a huge fan of all of his work (except for Platoon which I found boring and almost completely taken from Apocalypse Now). This film breaks the prototypical mold of Vietnam films (especially his own) and shows the entire feel of the historical era of which he is so well apt. No, this film is not entirely accurate and I don't believe it's meant to be. When you watch an Oliver Stone film you are transported into a noirish vision of our world through the eyes of a visual stylist and fellow man himself.
