Summary: Warm
Review: I was truly surprised to Ving Rhames portraying a gay character given that he possesses a manly image. Even more surprising, he did a convincing job of portraying a drag queen with an open heart. I saw this film for the first time on BET with my mother. Alfre Woodard and the ingenue give realistic portrayals of the characters. Watch it and be warmed.

Summary: Great family story
Review: It says a lot when an established actor does a part that is totally diferent from his normal roles. Ving Rhames does and outstanding job as a homosexual man who befriends a mother and her daughter. Alfre Woodard is excellent as the crack addit mother. This story will tug at all your emotions as they go through many ups and downs that people can relate to. I watched on cable and immediately had to purchase it on DVD. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a heartfelt story.

Summary: An open your heart movie!
Review: It takes a big man to take on a role of a gay cross-dressing man. And Ving Rhames, being big in stature, does an even bigger job at this role. He is fabulous and outstanding. Not a role I expected to see him in, but his heart is larger than life in this role. A definite must see!!!

Summary: A Deeply Moving Inner-City Film with an All-Star Cast
Review: The made-for-TV film "Holiday Heart", directed by Robert Townsend in 2000 and written by Cheryl L. West, is a deeply moving and engaging story involving an unusual set of characters. The main character, Holiday Heart (Ving Rhames, who is better known for his role of Luther Stickell in the 1996 "Mission Impossible" & the 2000 "Mission: Impossible II", as well as Marsellus Wallace in the 1994 "Pulp Fiction"), is an openly gay, professional female impersonator who is also deeply religious and directs a church choir. On a Halloween night while driving himself and his friend Jambalaya Blue (Johnathan Wesley Wallace) to a drag performance, his car breaks down. While trying to call for assistance, a girl about 12 years old pleads for his help. Following the girl, Niki (Jesika Reynolds), into a dilapidated apartment building, Holiday rescues her mother Wanda (Alfre Woodard, who played Lily Sloane in the 1996 "Star Trek VIII: First Contact") from her abusive boyfriend, L.T. (Ron Selmour). Taking them back to his apartment building (which he manages), Holiday becomes Niki's de facto father and good friend to Wanda. Wanting to give Niki a more stable home environment, Wanda marries the drug selling Silas (Mykelti Williamson, who played Bubba in the 1994 "Forrest Gump" and Don King in the 2001 "Ali"), who forbids Holiday from having any more contact with Niki. However, Wanda's unfortunate drug addictions drives Silas away, leaving Holiday to once again take care of Wanda and Niki; but Wanda's subsequent disappearance creates an interesting relationship between Holiday and Silas.

Though some may find the story presented in "Holiday Heart" disturbing with its starkly realistic portrayal of life in the inner city, drug addition and drug selling; it is these qualities that pull the viewer into its dark realism that allows the light within each character to shine brightly. Also, the excellent acting from Ving Rhames, Alfre Woodard and Mykelti Williamson makes this made-for-TV film truly stand out. It is no wonder that Alfre Woodard received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of the tragic Wanda. Consequently, I rate the 2000 "Holiday Heart" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it.

Summary: Fabulous; Great Plot; Must See Film
Review: Upon seeing "Holiday Heart" recently, I was left with a heartwarming feeling. A slightly unusual Christmas tale, but very well done. As in any movie, there were certain parts that were less than realistic (Social Services would've been all over this situation) and I would've liked to have seen a little more development of the relationship between all the characters, but as I usually say, I don't watch movies for reality, I watch them for entertainment or escape. I'll watch A&E, Discovery, and The Learning Channel for reality television.

The always-enjoyable Ving Rhames looked a little uncomfortable portraying a drag queen at first, but was impressively camping it up by the end of the film. There was a fine supporting cast as well, especially the exceptional Alfre Woodard as the mother who struggles with her drug addiction. Jesika Reynolds did a fine job in this role as the heartbroken daughter, and Mykelti Williamson was excellent as usual as Silas. Kudos to Robert Townsend for a lovely and slightly surprising story.

This is probably one of my Top Ten of movies that one must see for the realistic plot and the plot formation. There was more creative thought into the plot and dynamics between the characters and this is not your "normal" movie, however, it shows a paradox between being a drag queen and also being a Christian, which is cool. It's heart warming, yet realistic in a world that values quick answers and easy solutions. It offers hope and reality. The lines are well written. The music is great. The actors and actresses are well chosen. Top notch film.

"Holiday Heart" attempts to be a touching lite drama about a burly drag queen who befriends a female druggie and her daughter. Rhames works hard to fit into his character and his dresses and, to his credit, pulls it off. The film in general is a little schmaltzy around the edges, makes obvious efforts to push the viewers buttons for the desired result, and tells a story which beyond the unique premise is unoriginal. Nonetheless, the viewer who sets skeptical analysis aside and goes with the flow may just become pleasantly engrossed in this heart warming tale of strange bedfellows.

All in all, if you have a chance to watch this movie, I highly recommend it! You've got to give Ving Rhames credit for being in full drag on stage lip-synching "Baby love, my baby love..." Showtime delivers another "No Limits" performance.
