Summary: Not like every other romantic comedy
Review: This movie is quite funny. It's not like every other romantic comedy. I don't agree that it's like a daytime serial. It's funny when Holly Hunter's character are imagining or fantasizing. The actors are very good, especially Hunter and DeVito. It's a quite charming movie that is at least worth renting.

Summary: Amazon switches reviews
Review: Somehow this review got switched from the movie Living Out Loud to the book Living Out Loud which has nothing to do with the movie. So DISREGARD THIS REVIEW.

Summary: Delightful Suprise
Review: Picked it up because I just wanted to see a silly sentimental "chick flick". What I got instead was an incredibly moving character study which haunted me for days afterward. Some very amusing and memorable scenes punctuate this lovely film. A wonderful movie I rented, bought, gave away, and look forward to buying again. Truly a gem.

Summary: Touching and Ultimately Satisfying
Review: From the first frame of this movie, of Holly Hunter sitting in the resturant, I knew this this would be a five star picture. The talent that I fell in love with in Broadcast News still has the power to captivate the screen.

This movie is one of a kind. The two main charecters DO NOT climb in the sack after their first meeting. They take the time to enjoy one anothers' company and provide casual comfort as well as a strong emotional connection. It was hard to say goodbye to these charecters who, over the last 90 minutes, had become people.

The end, as much as some people didn't like it, left me satisfyed because I thought of it as though I was one of these charecters. In the end, we all just want our loved ones to feel happiness, and for Judith and Pat, that happiness was destined to be found further down the road.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I agree that this movie was highly under-rated. This movie shows that you can make it through the loss of a relationship and do more than just survive. Hooray for Judith, a vulnerable character with real problems, loneliness personified. The casting was great and everytime I see Queen Latifah in a movie, I like her more. Put on the movie, open a nice bottle of wine and ENJOY!

Summary: It has hope
Review: I saw this movie and I thought it gave hope to those of us that have passed a similar situation. I think it reflects that in life we need enjoy to its fullest. I enjoyed the entire movie and I even liked the music. This is the kind of movie you want to watch and go out and learn to scuba dive. Buy it if you can. It's a keeper!

Summary: A Feast for Sleeper Lovers
Review: Living Out Loud is by far the most under-rated film of 1998. It features Holly Hunter as a disillusioned semi-alcoholic divorcee who befriends Danny DeVito's turn of a flawed doorman, and also showcases both Queen Latifah's acting talent and musical talent as a sassy jazz singer.

The reason this movie is so good is because not only of its strong acting talent, but the writing, direction and music of the film were all superb also. I'll admit I was a bit timid in buying this DVD, but I figured it was worth a shot and I was right. This is a movie that most would look at and say, "Ya know--it looks good but I don't want to watch it." Believe me--this movie has a lot to say if you let it unfold.

The film starts as we see Judith (Hunter) ending a 20-year relationship with her husband in a restaurant. We see from the beginning that this character is flawed, that she doesn't really have a life--she eats in, sings to herself in her apartment, goes out alone, etc. Until she meets Pat (DeVito), a man who's life is in real shambles. He too has been recently divorced plus on top of that his daughter has just died. The circumstances that these two emotionally-disconnected people come together is astounding, which is also why they become such great friends.

Judith begins to feel better about herself after a passionaite kiss from a stranger opens her eyes to all she's been missing. She's planning on new things, to become a physician, and above all move on from her unhappy life. The reason this movie works so well is due to the uncanny chemistry between the three main characters and the deft direction of Richard LaGravenese. (Read the next paragraph only if you've seen this movie)

I think the reason some people don't like the ending is because they don't get it. Not to say I'm perfect, but if you listen to the commentary the directer himself explains it. In the beginning we see Judith alone in her apartment mouthing the words to a song. In the end, she's made good of all the things bad in her life, or in other words, she's able to "Live out loud," and sing in the neighborhood aloud to "Hot Fun in the Summertime." I like that she doesn't end up with DeVito in the end because you think from the start that they are, and for once in a somewhat romantic film the two main characters don't end up together. It makes the film more realistic and that is one of the best aspects of the movie.

Although films like American Beauty made a better, more clear point on it's subject matter, this film is a less serious and in a lot of ways less heftier account of modern lives that go from miserable to good. It's good to see a film like this, and it isn't any threat if you have the money to buy it.

This studio usually makes great discs, and did a great job with this movie, also, even though not many people are ever going to see this movie. The commentary track is good, but not great, but let's you in on scenes you don't really get--they become more clearly understood. The deleted scenes are okay--I don't know why they didn't leave in ALL of them because they make more sense with them in (and it's not like the movie is three hours long or anything--at an hour and forty minutes I don't know why they were cut). The aspect ratio of the disc is a generally pleasing 2.35:1 transfer.

Summary: an ending please
Review: Living Out Loud is a well put together movie...until the ending. The characters are real people with real life changing events going on and realistic reactions to them.Queen Latifah is wonderful in her role and Danny DeVito is a character that is truly 3 dimensional.Holly Hunter's internal dialouges are witty and sometimes too familiar.Yet you come to like these quirky characters, you want to see them pull through and go on.Then the credits roll and me personaly..I sat there feeling cheated.Yes it left me with something to think about, but it also gave no closure to the lives that I had been wrapped up in for the past hour and a half(give or take).I don't want to see them grow old and die,I just felt that there was a huge chunk of the movie that had been left out for no apparent reason.Overall, I enjoyed the movie.Unfortunately I have no desire to see it again and that isn't a good movie from my point of view...they should make you want to revisit them time and time again.

Summary: A MOVIE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OR... WORSE
Review: Not so long ago, Hollywood movies were worldly appreciated because of the universality of the themes treated by the screenplay writers and the directors. Actors didn't have to speak, the audience, american, french or japanese, knew what James Stewart or Greta Garbo thought just by watching their faces. That was the Golden Age of cinema.

LIVING OUT LOUD, like HAPPINESS or HURLYBURLY develops themes which surely are going to please New-Yorkers or californian people but frankly are not my cup of tea. Furthermore, one cannot say that these movies shine by an original cinematography. So Holly Hunter, a frustrated divorcee, has a lot of desires but prefers to speak to herself rather than to act. And here, we see the gap existing between this new generation of directors and the Lang-Ford-Walsh generation : the director of LIVING OUT LOUD MUST present the thoughts of Holly Hunter to the audience by filming her dreams because we don't have the slightest idea of what's hiding in her head. Why ? Because her character is so unreal, so "written" as if the director were right behind her telling her what to say.

OK ! I'm perhaps too virulent but I'm tired of these pseudo-intellectual movies that invade our screens.

As bonus feature, apart of a commentary, you will have the opportunity to watch LIVING OUT LOUD while two actors read the short stories of Tschekhov that have inspired the author-director. I must admit that I haven't had the courage to hear them until the end ; I definitively prefer to read them.

A DVD zone "upper west side of New-York".

Summary: An adult coming of age tale
Review: Ultimately the story's about the choices we as individuals make and the consequences of those choices.

Holly Hunter's character starts out as the middle aged wife of a doctor who's having an affair with a younger woman. As she becomes aware of the situation and as a result of her subsequent divorce she begins to question her place in the world and her own needs and desires seperate from what anybody else thinks or wants. Along the way she meets Danny Devito who has his own rather unique set of problems. As the film progresses a relationship develops with its own attendant perceptions, misconceptions and problems.

In the end both of the characters have to come to terms with who they've been and what it is that they want out of life and perhaps most importantly how satisfying it can be to follow your own voice.

Queen Latifah is a very good actress and a fine rapper. However her jazz skills need considerable improvement although there is certainly much potential if she's serious about pursuing it.

The film is at times somewhat sexually explicit if not necessarily graphic. So be prepared.

But all in all it was a pleasant viewing experience.
