Rating: Summary: Realistic and Fresh, Jim McKay's Our Song is sublime Review: Rarely has there been a more realistic and satisfying film about high school friends as Our Song. Three high school girls living in Brooklyn discover that when summer ends, they will be sent to different schools as their current school will be closing due to an asbestos problem. The way these three friends deal with their respective comings-of-age, and slowly drift apart is unrushed and sensitive. Throw in the terrific marching band routines performed by the Jackie Robinson Steppers, and outstanding performances by the three lead actresses (especially Kerry Washington) and you've got a winner in this film.
Rating: Summary: Overlooked Gem Review: Released on a limited basis around the United States, OUR SONG deserves a wider audience. It tells a honest and often moving story of three teenage girls in a marching band. All of the lead performances are strong, especially from newcomer Kerry Washington. Check it out.
Rating: Summary: whoa Review: Thats all I can say about this. My mom is actually the one that checked this movie out. I really enjoyed it. I agree with everyone else that It really feeling like your watching these girls life and they dont know it. I like the way OUR SONG just tell an honest story about three NYC girls and their everyday lives living in Crown Heights,Brooklyn. Even though this movie is rated R(for language and some teen drug use)it is safe for kids of all ages to see it. Its not just a chick flick. Im a guy and I liked it. This movie combines poverty, friendship, boys, hard choices, and teen pregnancy in one. Well check it out for yourselves. bye. im out. I admit that the movie was hard to keep up with but it was still an awsome movie.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: The first ten or fifteen minutes of this movie, I admit, it seemed like it was struggling to find its footing. But maybe it was just taking a while for me to get used to its unconventional dialogue and storytelling methods. But as the film moved on the storylines became increasingly captivating. The viewer who said that s/he couldn't figure out what the plot was was just expecting a conventional plot in a movie that's more about characters and their lives in general. Reality doesn't have plots in the sense movies do, unless you neglect large portions of it to strip down to one bare, linear story. OUR SONG is filled with the details and minutiae of the character's lives, and multiple subplots are fused into one film. For the majority of the movie I thought the characters Joy and Lani were much stronger than Maria, though by the end of the movie Maria's character was very developed and she was just as strong as the other two. This movie reminded me frequently of the best movies of Robert Altman, such as Nashville and Short Cuts
Rating: Summary: must see Review: There were a lot of good movies in 2001. But this was easily the best one, and I've tried to get every person I know to see it -- I only wish they could have seen this film on the big screen. I left the theatre with such a great feeling that day... The acting's so natural in this coming-of-age story, it's like watching a documentary. And the story is equally realistic and riveting. It's also one of the few movies that knows how to end -- nothing tacked on, no loose ends forced together.
Rating: Summary: boring........... Review: This movie gives a good look at what its like in the modern-day ghetto, but honestly, it lacked the common-threads of a good picture. Half way through, I wasn't even sure what the plot was. It shifted gears way too much and I couldn't follow whether it was this guy or that guy who knocked which girl up.
Rating: Summary: good movie Review: This movie I seen on cable tv,on starz. It was a good movie about the average life of young teenage girls who like to party, have guys and try their best in school at the same time.I liked the idea of the movie how the girls always try to keep the other up so they could succeed together, thats what true friendships are for.I felt sad that they seemed 2 grow apart in some ways. but its always good to give your friends some space. It sometimes helps build stronger frienships. I also liked how the all of them had jobs, and whatever bad qualities(character)they had it all showed & there was no sugar coating the lives of these young teenagers because none of them were totally innocent & neither are the ones that are out on the streets today... a real good movie to rent ;)
Rating: Summary: As real as real can get Review: This movie is as real as real can get.It was tape in my area. But be warned that when you are done looking at this movie you will be moved.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as I thought Review: This movie was not as well acted as i thought it would be. The story line needed more to it and the actor's seemed like they did not know what they were doing. I did not like this movie very much. I thought; as i had seen Kerry Washington in "Save the Last Dance" that the movie would be better as i think that she is a good acctress; however, i was dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: pleasant Review: When i seen this movie on the shelf at the video store, I though "OH boy another homemade movie" but I checked it out anyway and I loved it. I felt this movie was something that is a must see. I use to live in Brooklyn and it just brought me back there. It told how friends may grow apart and so many different paths that can be taken in life. Each girl goes through her own thing and i've seen girls and know girls that go through all the things that was addressed in this movie. They were probably first time actresses but they did ok.
