Summary: Long live Halle Berry!
Review: This is a TV production, apparently, but dignified enough to count as an excellent movie. Halle Berry, that wonderful woman who besides is a great actress, was associated in its production, so I understand that the story touches her, and she wanted to do it.

Dorothy Dandridge was herself a great actress and singer, but also an unhappy person. Only a part of her mishaps was due to the race question, and in this movie the issue is not overdone, and this is another great asset for the film.

We see here briefly Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, the legendary film tycoon Darryl Zanuck, Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier (actors and actresses who represent them as characters, that is, even for those who are still with us). And Brandauer makes an interesting creation with Otto Preminger's character.

There are some flaws in the narrative here and there, it doesn't go smoothly always. For example, when Dandridge in the first place fights fiercely to get the "Carmen" part in "Carmen Jones" and then suddenly she doesn't want it anymore. And Premiger evolves from a very lovable and protective role and unexpectedly turns into a creep.

But I love this film. It is compulsory for every Halle Berry fan, also for those who like to go into the classic cinema environment and its people. There is something that goes from Dorothy Dandridge to Halle Berry, and it is the dream of being recognised as Best Actress by the Academy. Dandridge couldn't make it, Berry has done it. I'm a great admirer of "Carmen Jones" myself and believe that Dandridge also deserved it. So sweet of Halle Berry to remind us of her in this nice production.

Summary: This movie was pretty good
Review: This is one of probably two movies that I like seeing Halle in. She made a suitable "Dorothy Dandridge." I liked the format of the story: Dot being on the phone with her best friend, while making a collage and we're basically being told a story through the snapshots.

Fascinating story. I've been reading a book on DD written by a man who had contact with her sister...much better than the movie, but nevertheless, the movie is ok for a beginner.

Summary: The Acting is Very Good, But....
Review: This made-for-TV version of the film focuses on Dandridge's musical career (rather than her film career, even though she was first black woman to be nominated for an Oscar), and the racism she had to endure throughout her life. The acting is very good (especially by Berry and Brent Spiner, who plays her manager), but the film left too much to supposition and imagination in some areas. For example, it never made clear if Otto Preminger really loved her or not, and why he dumped her so suddenly from his life; it also never made clear if Mills (her manager) loved her enough to have a physical relationship with her (or if he only loved her from afar). [The scene in which her manager holds her in his arms and sings to her to calm her down during one of her serious bouts of depression is especially touching.] The movie also suggests that the Black men who persued Dandridge were just sex-hungry and had no true affection for her; And because it's a TV-movie, we don't know if any of this is TRUE... So buy the film for the performances (which were very good), not for the story line (which is rather ragged) or the "historical accuracy" of the film (which is questionable).

Summary: Dandridge
Review: This movie was spectacular from a "made for t.v." movie stand point. Halle Berry was an exceptional choice to play the role of Ms. Dandridge. All my life, I have been a fan of Dorothy dandridge and I was happy to see a film depicting her life. It was very well put together but focused little on what Dorothy was known for, her movie career. Dorothy Dandridge was the first black woman to be nominated for an Acamedy Award. She had many stellar and standout performances including "Porgy and Bess", "Island in the Sun", and "Carman Jones". I would have liked to see more of the film cover her outstanding film career. The film did however show her fight against racism in the music as well as film inmdustry. She was a one of kind woman and this film is definitely worth watching if not owning.

Summary: Great role for Halle
Review: This was a very good biopic profiling the life of a African-American legend, based on the Dandridge bio written by her former manager, Earl Mills. I was impressed with Halle Berry's performance, because in other movies I've seen her in she usually doesn't show much range (exception: "Jungle Fever"). But in "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge", she proved herself to be a credible actress. She brought Ms. Dandridge to life. Worth checking out.
