Summary: Perfection for those who want it.
Review: The reason this film is so wonderful to those who think so is because it didn't play safe. The morality, the pace, the characters... Instead of being yet another crowd pleasing Hollywood movie, Eyes Wide Shut takes a stand. It depicts very specific types of people and situations that are as real as they are fantastic.

This film is just about guaranteed to polarize you. You will love or hate it. Personally, I love it. If you like to take your time and think; if you like to see through the surface of things, you'll love it too.

Summary: A classic...now and forever
Review: Few films have been so misunderstood. Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece "Eyes Wide Shut" is riveting filmmaking, from start to finish. This may be the only film I have experienced that lingers on in the mind for days!

Rich color, potent music and deep layers of psychology make up Kubrick's study of the sexual subconscious. Believe me, this film demands repeat viewings. A fine, unsettling and always thought-provoking film for adults.

I can't wait for the DVD!

Summary: Eyes wide open to our feelings reality.
Review: Don't close your eyes to this motion picture. "Eyes Wide Shut" really deserves your attention. Not only because this is the last production by director Stanley Kubrick, but due to the fact that Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey) really did a great job. "Eyes Wide Shut" is a movie that explores the psychological roots of the human feelings, the weaknesses of the mankind, concerning a very delicate subject, which is the treason. The movie constantly gives us something to think about. And there is a lot of time to do it since the movie is very long, sometimes tedious, but nothing that we can not tolerate. The eroticism present in the movie is not gratuitous, there is a purpose to be there and the purpose is to make us face the sex, one of the biggest myths of the humanity, as a natural thing. In "Eyes Wide Shut" the sexuality is treated with extremely naturalness.

It seems that Kubrick's last piece of art is a true masterpiece, and not an inferior Kubrick's, as some critics insists to label. It succeeds in many aspects: the performances by Tom Cruise and his wife, the actress Nicole Kidman, are extremely well, so are the supporting ones, the art direction and costume design are superb, the soundtrack is excellent, not to mention, of course, the direction. And think about the possibility of the whole story of "Eyes Wide Shut" to be nothing but a dream, and you will like it even more. So, keep your eyes wide open.

Summary: Kubrick's Mesmerizing Swan Song
Review: Many critics didn't understand Kubrick's films and I have always had to repeatedly view his films to appreciate their full impact and beauty. Eyes Wide Shut is no acception. I look forward to its DVD release with great anticipation. What a tragic loss Stanley Kubrick is no longer with us.

Summary: Not bad but not very good either
Review: This film about jealousy could have been one of Kubrick's best. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman give top notch performances and there is quite a handful of breath taking scenes that remind you that your watching a Kubrick film. But in the end it looks like an expensive remake of Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" minus the comedy and plus an extra hour. The movie gets so tedious at parts that it is almost unbearable. Should have been chopped down a bit by the editors. Some scenes are great as Cruise walks through one bizarre situation after another (each one gets a little more strange until you can't believe your watching the same film). Some scenes are just plain stupid and sometimes disturbing (When Cruise and Kidman smoke pot with their child sleeping in the other room and when a costume shop owner pimps his daughter to some foreingers). Director, Sidney Pollak turns out a very good supporting role in this film as one of Cruises rich friends. This film is a little hard to recomend though but just makes it. It deserves a watch as a last film of a great director but the sad thing was it was capable of much more. Watch "After Hours" for the same effect too because that film is much better and funnier.

Summary: A fitting end for the master
Review: This is Kubrick's most human picture, and it unfortunately suffers from an abundance of people intent on seeing some serious sex. Settle down, watch the movie, and enjoy. The only problem is the penchant the characters have for repeating dialogue unnecessarily, as if to heighten the melodrama. Otherwise, it's a good movie. Underline movie. Not a work of art. Not a temple to the Gods. Just a movie.

Summary: dissapointment
Review: The fact that the set design and cinematography were the best parts of this film proves that Kubrik finished his career with his worst film. The score had to be the most monotonous thing that I have ever heard, and this is one of the many places where Kubrik's films usually shine. Add to that awkward dialogue and a poor performance by Nicole Kidman, and you have a movie that I wish was never released, for Kubrik's sake.

Summary: Garbage!
Review: I had never had an urge to walk out of a movie before I saw this wreck. Waaaaay to slow and the acting was horrid. Plus, they took two hours to actually set up what seemed to be the plot, and then they make the ending ridiculously ant-climactic. If you like to be entertained when you watch movies, stay away from this 3 hour long nightmare.

Summary: Unforgettable, Mesmerizing
Review: I believe that the review entitled "1999's Future Classic" says it all. It was panned by many critics because of the hype it had inadvertently built up. Critics, being self-conscious wanna-be filmmakers, want to be as original as they can be, so that they can be heard. The majority of them, after some dispute, finally settled on the Flawed Masterpiece category, along with American Beauty and Magnolia, cast aside in their minds to be settled and forgotten for a very long time. However, the consistently 'Kubrick' touch to the piece-with the smooth camera movement, surreal sets, and intense performances-will keep this film in everyone's memory for years to come. I have only seen this film once, and I plan to see it many times more with this DVD release. Though most intense dramas are only viewable a first time, Kubrick films surface the audience's desire to see it again. There is a seemingly infinite amount of information in a Kubrick film, and that is why I highly recommend the DVD.

Summary: So what IS this movie about?
Review: As with all modern classics, a lot of people have missed the point of this movie. The comment that bugs me the most is "it's not about sex," as if people feel the need to defend the movie.

They're wrong - it IS about sex - but it's not pornography. The movie is, at heart, a vast, in-depth exploration of human nature, and of our sexual instinct in particular. Every event in this movie explores some realm of sexual commitment, temptation, degradation, or obsession. The final scene perfectly sums up the resulting discovery.

Kubrick did not set out to portray a glowing, virtuous picture of human nature in this film. He in fact did not have a very high opinion of human nature, which is apparent from his other movies. Eyes Wide Shut is particularly scathing; anyone who can watch this movie and not be scared out of their minds by the slight possibility that Kubrick's proposal is true is not fully understanding what this movie is saying.

This movie is truly one of the greatest pieces of modern film literature I have yet come across. It is the most explorative philosophical movie that I think has been released in a long time, and it most certainly deserves a better recognition than it has at the present. Hopefully the film critic "authorities" will eventually be able to recognize its true worth.
