Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: The best thing i found of this movie was.. all of it.The "psychological effects" are amazing .. The music was .. WOW .. It was kinda slow at the start but soon made up for it.
Rating: Summary: Auteurist stigma Review: The sad thing about Stanley Kubric's career was the importance placed on absolutely every frame of every film he ever made. As this was his final opus many wanted to see the closing chapter in a perplexing drama about an auteur who never sold out. Eyes Wide Shut wasn't that film, in fact the direction is heavy handed, the acting stilted and false, and the script was loathsome and terrible at it's absolute best. For those who didn't get it, or don't understand the film, where were you? Eyes Wide Shut is so heavy handed from start to finish that it is just plain boring. There are some beautiful sequences, some thought provoking concepts, some nice imagery, definately, but why is everyone so afraid to say that it just wasn't that good? I have to point out how stupid it is to release on DVD a censored version of the film (at least we saw the real one here in Australia)! And not in widescreen either. How rediculous.
Rating: Summary: Visual Masterpiece Review: This proved, beyond a doubt, that Kubrick was one of the last great auteurs, the likes of which we will never see again. I agree with the previous comments that you will either love it or hate it, depending on if you understand it. As for the full-screen format goes, few people know but Kubrick actually hated the idea of "widescreen" format, and pretty much demanded that none of his films be released widescreen. As much as I repect Kubrick as a filmmaker, let's all hope the studio overrides his wish and someday releases this in widescreen. To the great perfectionist and masterful auteur: we will all miss your stunning eye and phenomenal grace -- the world has lost an artist.
Rating: Summary: Come again? Review: Critics hated it. Rightfully so. "Artistic" people claimed to "get it", and I and my mother simply sat there at the end of the movie in the theatre and turned to each other and went, "What? " There was NOTHING there. For three hours we sat and watched Tom Cruise walk around.....then walk around, say a couple lines, (actually repeat what someone else said)....then walk some more....then walk....WALK! I like to be given something to think about too, but this movie had no substance and offered nothing to the intellect. Some people say "Oh, Kubrick! What a genius, he was so misunderstood and his films should be studied!" BULL. This film was just an ego trip that they all worked on for years of their lives. And for what? What is this movie? A man walking around a fake city. It doesn't portray the "deep inner thoughts of the sexual unconscious...." It portrays aimless filmmaking, and the only reason it got so much buzz was because it was Kubrick. BIG DEAL. The only film of his I enjoy is "The Shining", which I will admit is fantastic. That's all. The rest I don't care to see, and after viewing this, I especially don't care to see. I don't care for his pacing, style, etc. In his films, one person says something, then.....SILENCE.....then a bit of dialogue.....SILENCE.....SILENCE. Please. This wasn't masterful storytelling. This was pretention at its peak.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking, Amazing, Awe-Inspiring Review: Anyone who didn't like this movie simply didn't get it. First of all: the direction and lighting are PERFECT. PERIOD. The whole firl has a sort of dream-like other wordly feeling to it. It takes you to another place. Next: the story. It is a simple one of a man's jealousy that we men can all identify with in one way or another. but is the plot that simple? It actually achieves multiple levels before the films conclusion, touching upon a ton of subjects, mostly, but in no way limited to, themes of trust. Most of the people (and critics) expected to see Kidman and Cruise have sex for the whole 3 hours. They don't. There is a lot of nudity, but it is served in such a way as to desensitize the viewer from the pleasure of seeing a nude body. This may be anothr point of the film.... BOTTOM LINE: One of the best films ever made. If you didn't like it....got watch Titanic for the Billionth time...or something else without substance. BEcause Eyes Wide Shut will change your perceptions, feelings, etc.
Rating: Summary: The last, but not the best Review: Exactly where was this film going? That is the question. Unlike other reviews, this is not one where the reviewer liked the film. I am still waiting for the point of the movie to be made. Where is the rest? So much ado about nothing. This movie is not misunderstood. It's just not finished. Large portions are missing, like plot, substance and cohesiveness. There were many rambling conversations reminiscent of Woody Allen but not half as good. Dark and eerie - yes. Thought provoking - no. Lots of questions - but few answers. Up till the end I was wondering how Cruise and Kidman could star in this cinematic, clearly expensive, excuse of a B movie.
Rating: Summary: Oh Dear Review: Alas, this was not the late, great Stanley's best movie. It only falls short of risable by a narrow margin. "An intelligent analysis of human sexuality"?..2hrs of pretentious psycho-babble which was so mind-numbing as to hardly be believed....but then again I've seen Dr. Strangelove...
Rating: Summary: weird direction Review: I went to watch this film after all the fuss the media has created to find out what its all about. well, i think the films really have two different plot in it, one is the relationship between Tom cruise and nicole kidmanss' characters and the other is more like a murder mystery, I came out the the cinema a bit confused think what standley kubrick was trying to acheive here. The acting by the cast is first rate, nicole kidman is beautiful regardless she's naked or not, which reminds me, she's hardly in the second part of the film. the bottom line is if you are buying this to see all the sexy scence, fine, but the acting it's what your money pays for.
Rating: Summary: Kubrick Ends On a Low Note! Review: This was By Far The Biggest Movie Letdown I Have Ever Experienced! This Movie was a MESS and So Poorly Done that It is hard to believe that it came from the Great Stanley Kubrick! The Only excuse I can think for this Travesty of a Film is that Mr Kubrick must have been Sick while he was Working on it. Where was all this Hot Sex that was supposed to be taking place between Tom and Nicole. This Film was So SEXLESS that it should have been Rated PG! I actually FELL ASLEEP for a few moments while watching this film, that is how Boring it was! There was No Plot and the Film to me seemed Unedited, even though the official word was that Kubrick had completed the film before he passed away! I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE ACADEMY FOR NOT GIVING THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE ANY OSCAR NOMINATIONS! I am shocked that so many of the reviewer's here are raving about this film, they must be relatives of Tom and Nicole! It is a Shame that Stanley Kubrick's Last Film had to be this Turkey!
Rating: Summary: Ban this DVD! Review: Not only does this movie NOT contain the original version as filmed by Kubrick--it is FULL SCREEN! Can you imagine not having a widescreen version of this film? Don't buy it!
