Summary: One for the Ages
Review: Every one of Kubrick's films (except maybe Full Metal Jacket, which I loved immediately ) has required repeat viewings with close attentiveness in order to appreciate its full grandeur. EWS is no exception. Not unlike the first time I saw A Clockwork Orange, I hated EWS after my first viewing. I believed that it was no more than a tasteful porn flick. But once I got over the nudity and sex, It became obvious that this was film-making at its purest state - a painting in motion. The look of this movie is absolutely exquisite. The lighting, perfect. The direction, flawless. Cruise's character is every single man who has ever been in love. Kidman's underused character is what every man desires in a wife. The story Kubrick tells is thought-provoking and as usual, keeps you guessing at every scene. This film will be studied, it will become a classic. It is a must have.

Summary: The Master done it again.....
Review: Stanley Kubrick's done it again. Once again he presented to the world a masterpiece in movie industry. This is by far the best of Kubrick. What is a dream? What is reality? Where is the fine line between dreams & reality? Let Kubrick walk you through the movie. Kubrick always comes up with a different approach to telling a story & he did it with such masterful skills. One has to marvel at how the story is told, how the unreal (or real) images unfold before us & how we will react to these images. I am glad that Kubrick left us with such a Masterpiece & I regret the loss of him. Buy it, because you can watch it over & over again, each time a discovery, of what Stanley's trying to tell us about love, jealousy, dreams & reality.....

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: Watching it is akin to gaining entrance into Kubrick's last great, perhaps greatest and most beautiful, labyrinthe. Like a classic work of music or literature or painting, Kubrick's films grow with time. And "Eyes Wide Shut" is no exception. Gorgeously designed and so fantastically layered with detail that there is something new to look at and study with each viewing... if the viewer will be open enough to have the patience to do so.

Graceful, elegant, disturbing and terribly funny. It is without a doubt a brilliant film.

And the DVD presentation is stunning. Not widescreen and never shot that way. Get it and savor every moment.

Summary: Best and most underrated movie ever? Discuss.
Review: Being a psychotic film lover, I've seen innumerable movies in my life. But never have I seen a film so encyclopedic in form/content technique as Eyes Wide Shut. It's scene pacing, dialogue nuancing, use of camera movement, cinematography, film editing, and music scoring all connect with how the director viewed the material--never before have I seen such a precise realization of a director's point-of-view (not just on infidelity and sexual jealousy, but any subject). But even moreso, Kubrick did on this film what I don't think any other director has even tried or succeeded at: he was able to move from scene to scene the same way a musical composer smoothly and subtly switches from mood to mood--he uses all the tools available in the medium to seamlessly make the viewer switch from being frightened to eventually making them laugh at a humorous situation and then making them afraid again, and then shocked, then uneasy, etc. For instance, Tom Cruise is told by his wife that she is not as comfortable with their marriage as he thought. Then, in a taxi, he imagines her in bed with a naval officer. In the next scene he arrives at the death bed of a patient, whose daughter pathetically tries to seduce him--and no matter what the mood of the particular scene is, we remain firmly entrenched in the film's themes of illicit sexual relations and depravity vs. fidelity. This movie is the definitive emotional roller-coaster of cinema. I'm sure you're saying, 'don't most movies do that?' Actually, most movies stay on a constant emotional journey, such as a constant rising of fear or a constant rising of laughter (with the occasional self-indulgent detour from the theme). But this one explores every possible mood it can conjure up. It does EVERYTHING.

Summary: An excellent video, if you...
Review: understand what the director was trying to do. Look at the title! This is dream taking place in reality. People complain that the film doesn't move fast enough, that the scenes tend to never pan out. Just like in a dream. And that's the point that far too few people get.

The performances in this movie (especially Nicole Kidman) are unbelievable. The scene where she and Bill (Cruise) are in the bedroom smoking pot is one of the most incredible jobs of acting I've ever seen. She really DOES look stoned, she really SEEMS to be giggling out of control. And the monologue that follows is nothing short of hypnotic in its delivery. All in all, an amazing scene.

The films scenery, and the atmosphere it exudes, it's all classic Kubrik. For me, it had the same sort of aura that "A Clockwork Orange" had, so if you liked or hated that movie could be a good barometer of whether or not you'll want to get this video.

The bottom line: If you are able to find the underlying theme in movies, you don't need a car chase or and explosion to stay interested, you don't refer to scenes with dialogue as, "the boring part", and you have enjoyed Kubrik in the past, you just may love this video.

Summary: Excellent film - shame about the DVD
Review: I hadn't seen this film in the cinema, and I found myself transfixed in front of my television. However, it is an acquired taste. The quality of the transfer was OK - not one of the best, but not one of the worst either. However, the major disappointment is that the only version on this DVD is the pan and scan version. No letterboxing to be found! Quality of the audio is wonderful, with a nice enveloping 5.1 soundtrack. Extras, while few, are of excellent quality and consist of interviews with Cruise, Kidman and Spielberg. I found the Cruise and Kidman interviews to be particularly interesting, and their experience with Kubrick was either deeply moving or they're good actors ;)

Summary: Mezmerizing, Provoking, Kubrickian!
Review: I herad a lot of negative reactions to this film before I saw it, most noteably from a good friend who is a huge Kubrick fan. I feared the worst as I rented this film and sat down to watch it.

What I got that night was an awesomely engaging and mezmerizing film to which I was completely drawn for the rather lengthy running time. Masterfully done, in a style very reminicent of 2001: A Space Odyssey, this film has an erotic and egmatic feel to it that makes it quite an experience. Cruise and Kidman are electrifying together on the screen.

I will admit that the film is slow and deliberate, but if you allow yourself to be drawn into the plot and the characters, this only adds to the suspensful experience. I recommend it to fans of this type of work, but I don't think it will satisfy the everyday moviegoer.

See for yourself...

Summary: One of the best films of the 90's
Review: I agree with Martin Scorcese's recent comments (on Roger Ebert's program) that Eyes Wide Shut is one of the best films of the 90's. It's a great, mysterious film, similar to Welles's version of The Trial or Scorcese's After Hours. Too many people fell victim to all the marketing about the movie, and perhaps thought that it would just be about sex. But, if you're looking for film that will clearly stand the test of time, and follows in the great tradition of such directors as Murnau, Welles, and Scorcese, then buy Eyes Wide Shut. If your looking sex, turn on Cinemax on a friday night

Summary: eyes wide shut
Review: kubrick is the real star of the film. notice the colors, the complex characters, and the dream like world they choose to live in. kubrick ends his career with a profound look at trust, introspection, and curiosity. if you think this is going to be some cheap skin flick like "basic instinct", you are better off renting "color of night" or "jade". this movie is not one of those, it stands alone. it's hypnotic and dreamlike. it's unique and incomparable. it's kubrick and you need'nt say more. watch in a quiet enviroment and keep and open mind. you'll see what i mean.
