Summary: disappointing
Review: I wish I had read Mr. Mylott's review prior to seeing this film, it could've saved me the three tortuous hours, and he says it all perfectly. I love everything else Kubrick has done, and was set to love this film. Sadly, this is a waste of good actors and beautiful sets, and a poor end to Kubrick's brilliant career. Remember him for his masterpieces--Full Metal Jacket, and "2001" for the greatest opening sequence in film ever.

Summary: very slow - like Devil's Own
Review: This was the second slowest movie we ever saw. We will usually stick it out through most movies to get our money's worth, but my wife walked out within the first half hour. Don't waste your money or time on it. I recognize that Kubrik is dead and it's a classic, yada yada yada, but a slow film is still slow.

Summary: My Take on Stanley Kubrick's final film....
Review: What angered me at first was how many people wanted to watch this movie only to stare at Nicole Kidman's naked chest and rear end, or believed that Stanley Kubrick was a "weirdo" or a "freak" for creating "such a perverted movie." But what really angered me was how may people expected "Eyes Wide Shut" to be a pornographic movie and how many people have dismissed it for it's subtle nature, "lack of visuals", and time length. The thing is, as a real film viewer, you need to look pass that and really watch the film carefully to understand the message it tries to give. "Eyes Wide Shut" is one of the most unforgetable movies I have ever seen in the theater and will, as far as I'm concerned, satisfy most Kubrick fans. I admit, the performances by Cruise and Kidman were less than outstanding in this film, but what really stands out is it's visually stunning moments(the couple's bedroom, the sex scene by the mirror, the Long Island mansion/sex cult scene) and the message it brings out about sex, jealousy, and infidelity. Do not depend on the bad reviews you hear or read about this film. Watch the movie, and judge for yourself. It will be possible that you will not enjoy this film, but it will leave you with an impression that will stay with you for days.

Summary: Over-rated film
Review: I don't know what's the big deal about this movie that it's one of the best sellers. It's dragging and pointless. The best part is the conversation (arguement)between Cruise and kidman in the bedroom. Other than that, everything else is just very dry and plain. If you like the combination of Cruise and Kidman, then you've gotta watch Far and Away. Now, that's a quality movie!

Summary: Rent, don't buy. In fact, don't rent!
Review: Many of these reviews are very in depth in their analysis and critique but I will be very brief and blunt. This movie was terrible, it did sound intriguing in the theatrical trailer because they didn't tell you much of the plot, which was only partially promising. The film dragged on for so long in some parts that you wondered if you'd missed something very important. I don't even think that shortening the running time would have made it easier to digest. It's sad to see that this was the end of an engaging and succesful career (Kubrick's) and definitely not Cruise's or Kidman's best work together or separately. Do not waste your money in any way on this movie (I'm still upset that I spent 8 bucks on it in the theaters)!

Summary: About 30 years too late
Review: You'll love this movie if: 1) The fact that women have sexual fantasies is a huge revelation to you. 2) You think that women swearing are shocking. 3) You are really turned on by imagery of the feudal church.

If not, skip this pretentious attempt at shock art. Kubrick is attempting to upset sexual mores that were shattered over 30 years ago. -yawn-

Summary: Not so shocking
Review: When I saw this movie in the theater, I had high hopes for it. From the reviews I heard, it was supposed to shock me. But, sadly, it didn't. This story could have easily been told in an hour 1/2. If you want to be shocked, you're better off renting/buying Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, or 9 1/2 weeks... Rent it first then buy it if you like it.

Summary: A Major Disappointment!
Review: Two years to make this! I am an ardent Kubrick fan but this has to be his worst movie and one of the worst movies of the year. Kubrick's films, despite their excesses, are usually redeemed by brilliant direction coupled with a cerebral power that gives the viewer plenty to think about. Most of his films contain several set pieces of such stunning visuals that they become icons (Slim Pickens riding the bomb in "Dr. Strangelove", the star child at the end of "2001", etc.) Well, "Eyes Wide Shut" has no stunning visuals and there seems to be no intelligence at work here. The clever novel on which it was based presented an opportunity for Kubrick to explore passion and fidelity. Instead, Kubrick delivers a lumbering, static film that neither arouses nor involves an any level-narrative, visual, dialogue. The whole thing just creaks along with the pacing of an old arthritic tortoise with knee replacements. What in the dickens made Kubrick, who was in his seventies when he made this and died of a heart attack days after finishing the film, think that he could make a convincing film about erotcism and desire? Clearly, he couldn't. Cruise and Kidman try nobly but who can act for a director who, it is rumored, demanded as many as a hundred takes for something as simple as walking through a doorway? Those looking for sex will be disappointed-the ritualized nude scene in the mansion is so stylized and silly that it is absurd rather than pornographic. Do Cruise and Kidman do "it" in this movie? Let me save you the money and tell you: "No!". Kidman is briefly nude for a few moments and that is it. So what is the film about? Cheating. Cruise plays a husband who flirts with temptation but never gives in. Kidman plays his wife who may or may not have. Who cares? I know that I didn't and Kubrick gives no reason why anyone should care about them OR the film. I think that if Kubrick had lived that the studio would have realized that it was time to rein in his megalomania and excesses and put a stop to the Kubrick legend and license to do whatever he wanted. Let's face it, he hadn't made a good film in DECADES when he threw this stinker out. Wisely, actor Harvey Keitel walked out on the production when he saw the extravagance of Kubrick and his fumbling "what do I do now?" attitude toward filmmaking. His may have been the only voice of reason on this production. Do not waste your time on this one unless you absolutely MUST see everything that Kubrick has ever done. A real loser.

Summary: Amazing stuff...totally misunderstood...
Review: I really do think that Eyes Wide Shut is one of the best pictures that Stanley Kubrick made, and was -easily- one of the best films of the 1990's. Easily. It's not suprising that so many people hate it though...of course, this kind of film, with this kind of slow, tense mood is not usually one that people associate themselves with. And Kubricks picture does this is a totally unique and new way. Every movement in the film is accented. I don't know, I think it's amazing. But I don't agree with a number of critics and film journalists who claim that the film has a 'happy' ending. I don't think the ending is even remotely happy. But I wont get into that here. Anyhow...if you willing to just completely submit yourself to a film, then I think you would like this picture.

Summary: Kubrick's grand finale
Review: I saw this film on opening day, which means that I loved it before the backlash began. Kubrick's films are not for every taste. Only certain sensibilities can appreciate them.

EWS grows on you. My first impression was: "Hey, this is a pretty good film that has some major flaws". But the fact of the matter is that it has very few flaws. The so-called flaws are really intentional, for the most part, because the world of the film is a dream, a freudian odyssey into a man's sexual subconscious. You may also find some similarities with Milton's Paradise Lost, which become clear when you look closer.

A fascinating, engaging, moving and ultimately beautiful film. Doesn't stand as one of Kubrick's major films, but a perfect ending to a master's brilliant career and life. Thank you, Mr. Kubrick.
