Rating: Summary: Film, painting, and novel. Review: From the mishandled promotions on, this is a wonderful, eerie film that was horribly misrepresented as a long sexual orgy. No surprise that people are turned off that the majority of sex in the film is dead, disturbing and disquieting (As was the intent), and the plot slow and deliberate like most in-depth character studies. There is so much going on in this movie that I won't even try to detail it, as undoubtedly there will be theses and doctorates written about the various topics. As a result, Kubrick has created a film that would probably fare much better in a classroom than a wide public release. The painterly use of color and contrasts (reds, blues, greens, and purples), the symbolism (kitchen table), and juxtapositions all come together like puzzle pieces to reveal a marriage and a life at crossroads, finely shown from the first dressing scene, which also firmly establishes the title of the film as theme. There's not a scene in this film that, purposely I believe, can't be read in at least two different ways. Is the ending hopeful? Maybe, maybe not. But the film is finely crafted, well acted, and masterful.
Rating: Summary: Once is definitely not enough! Review: If ever a film required multiple viewings to give multiple pleasures Eyes Wide Shut is it. I have seen it 4 times now and am still in the stages of enjoying the dialogue and beauty of the sets. Come a time I am sure the entire film will take on a specific meaning for me but right now it seems different with every viewing. Sometimes I think it is about morality and temptation ( a logical symbolic extrapolation) and at times it appears to be about how people need to react to different parts of their relationship in personal ways to get past the daggers of everyday life. It really is a wonderful movie on many different levels and should never be seen just once!
Rating: Summary: A very good film from the hands of a master Review: I watched it recently with an open mind and found it to be verygood--beautifully shot, well-acted, lovingly created. While Kubrickhas certainly had better stories to work with in the past, this story held my interest throughout. And the visuals alone make it worth a rental. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in the unique, enduring vision of Kubrick or to anyone interested in an off-beat, non-Hollywoodish evening of provocative entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Why don't I get invited to parties like this? Review: With the exception of Dr. Strangelove & The Shining I can do without Stanley Kubrick. I must say, however, I found Eyes Wide Shut both intriguing and well done. If you can sit through all of 2001, you can't possibly say Eyes Wide Shut is slow--or difficult to understand! And that's not to mention the gorgeous T&A. Nothing cryptic about that. No siree.
Rating: Summary: Have Some Respect Review: It is obvious from the reviews that have been posted in this section that many people did not enjoy Stanley Kubrick's "Eye's Wide Shut". Although I tended to agree that parts of the movie were drawn out I must say that I think the movie is misunderstood in it's meaning and depth.Ithink everyone needs to see this movie again and make another decision about it.
Rating: Summary: What Was All The Hoopla About? Review: I had heard that Eyes Wide Shut wasn't any good, but I went ahead and rented it to see what all the "talk" was about. What a terrible dissapointment! This movie was like a soft core porno flick. The only plot this movie had was sex. Cruise and Kidman didn't do too good a job acting either. Eyes Wide Shut was a bad movie from the get go. I would advise not renting it.
Rating: Summary: Don't Waste your precious time! Review: An agonizingly slow, slow movie that goes nowhere. What a terrible disappointment. Anything would be better than 3 hours of a plot that went nowhere.
Rating: Summary: patience and imagination Review: Though most who saw this movie didn't like it, I believe it is one of the most amazing movies ever made. Many say it was too slow which makes me sad, I think the pacing and rhythm of the film were perfectly appropriate, essential to the essence of this movie. It was a masterpiece of film making. After leaving the theater I felt incredibly lucky to have been able to experience such a phenomenal film. I feel for those who didn't have enough patience and imagination to let this movie reach them, it is their loss. For those who enjoyed it as I did, share your opinion with others so they may indulge their curiousity and see it for themselves rather than be turned off to the possibility by those who don't like it and seam to speak the loudest.
Rating: Summary: A Film Ahead of Its Time! Review: As with almost all of Kubrick's films, Eyes Wide Shut is a piece that is ahead of its time. The reaction to this film is just what I had expected. Time and time again, during the initial release of a new Kubrick film, reaction is ALWAYS sharply divided. The reviews are mainly negative and the public does'nt seem to know what to make of the film. Just go back and look at the original reviews for "2001" when it first came out back in 1968. They're devestating. Now the film continually makes many 10 best lists. This goes for most of his films. I think that the film will stand the test of time (in fact some film critics who panned the film are coming around already). Today's moviegoing public just does'nt seem to have the patience to stay with a film such as this. Kubrick's multilayed film requires one to "think" and work for its rewards. There is no question he intended to capture a dream state on film, hence the unreality of the sets, the stylized lighting, the surreal masked ball, ect. As with all Kubrick films, the atmosphere is tightly controlled, the pacing deliberate and at times even langourous, the dialogue intentionally repetitive, and the direction, so stylized and instantly recognizable that there is no question who made this film. The media had built up expectations to the point of insane frenzy, no movie could have lived up to that. If you're expecting to see first class porn with A list stars and very kinky hardcore sex scenes, you my friend are sadly mistaken and will be disappointed. But is you go in knowing this is a very surreal art film you may like it. Lastly, I feel the need to "join in with the rest of the chorus", I wish the unedited version would have been presented on DVD. It's an absolute shameful decision on WB's part regardless of "Kubrick's final wishes". An alternate version MUST be presented.
Rating: Summary: A Brave Picture vs A One Line Audience Review: Unfortunetly, the Americam public and critics prepared themselves for a star studed sex show. Needless to say they didn't get one. Instead they got a brave and bold film about relationships and what can come to eat at our minds when we are in them. Brain work for movie goers. Sadly not what America wants, but surely needs.
