Rating: Summary: You are not sure about your life! Review: Kubrick is just great. Before I watch the DVD, some reviewssaid Eyes Wide Shut was the kind of european movie that made by anAmerican director. I don't know if it's a compliment or a polite wayto say it's a boring movie. But as what's been tactfully revealed scene by scene, even though the pace is "slow", we could gradually walk into the bizarre world of Kubrick. It's so surreal what Cruise has encountered ... but come to think about it, has anyone in our real world not experienced any strange incidence througout our life? Kubrick unfolds the mystery of life, fantasy and sex deliberately in front of our eyes. It's so visually gorgeous yet psychologically frightening ... the faithful wife but betrayal ... the party with stunning female bodies but deadly ... All of these articulate the motif of the movie under superb direction. It touches my heart so deeply that deseves another hat-off to such a great director!
Rating: Summary: Best movie ever made Review: Great, a masterpiece. In-describable.
Rating: Summary: Aptly named Review: The name is appropos. You may fall asleep during this movie, and then wonder later "was it a dream, or did I really watch it?" The film is visually appealing, but who doesn't enjoy watching good- looking people walk around naked? It has that same car-wreck pull to it. And like a car accident, the film is dark-- full of mystery, sexual intrigue, jealousy, and obsesssion. So, how could that be boring?Well, for one thing, every scene looks staged-- there is no flow or realism with the characters. Everybody in this film is either melodramatic or overly serious. Professionals rave about Kubrick's technical genius, but a director can be so much the perfectionist, that he loses all sense of warmth or spontaneity from his actors. Nicole and Tom may as well have been mannequins brought back to life to cry or stare on command. Realism is infinitely more interesting and revealing than this kind of over-staged melodrama. People who defend this film fall back on the excuse that it's not meant to be realistic because it is dream-like, and who knows what was real and what was not... to me, that is the ultimate cop out. Personally, I don't think Kubrick knew what was real either. For Kubrick buff's, included on the DVD version of this film, are interesting interviews of Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and and director Steven Spielberg. Nicole is perhaps the most thoughtful in her answers (like many women, she just communicates better), but both husband and wife reveal how touched they were by the director, and how stunned by his death. In his interview, Spielberg says "you can't turn off a Kubrick film", as a testament to the late director's genius. Maybe he can't-- I paused it several times, and actually stopped the film at one point to do something else, and only reluctantly returned to it when I realised I had to return it to the video store that day or pay a late fee. This film is not worth paying a late fee.
Rating: Summary: Waste of time, waste of film Review: Did they edit this movie? It goes on and on. The love scene between the husband and wife team has as much heat as a snowflake at the North Pole. The last line by NK just sums up what you should do with your partner. This is a video NO.
Rating: Summary: Excellent film Review: As with all of Kubrick's films, this one is a masterpiece. It's slow pace compliments the waking dream atmosphere that set set up in every detail of this film. It's almost hypnotic in the spell that it casts over the viewer. Watchig it over and over reveals more and more hints as to what is a dream and what is not. The quality of the DVD is excelent, highlighting the strong primary colors of the Christmas lights. And for those of you complaining about the full screen aspect ratio: that is the way Kubrick shot the film, the whole image is there, and it says so at the start of the movie.
Rating: Summary: a film the mass of idiots won't understand& can't appreciate Review: So you want to know what Eyes Wide Shut is all about huh? Well don't ask me because, being art, this film is open to interpretation. However, the best way to an artist's point is through the title. What does it mean? To whom does it apply? Does it mean anything at all? (Hint: riddle me this, riddle me that, what does The Shining have to do with the theme and focus of the movie other than a nifty name for a special gift? By the way, if you have a valid and logical answer, please let me know because I am completely open to learning new things) Anyway, back to my point. I had no point. So do you finally get it. You thought you were going to read another review from a nobody who thinks they are a somebody. Same thing happend to Dr. William Harford. He thought he had everything planne out. He had a profitable medical practice, a beautiful and intellegente wife, a little rug rat. He had everything while at the same time having nothing. That's the art. Kubrick, the directorial genius of no rival, took you on a great long dream. he duped you. But it got you thinking didn't it. You started thinking about sex. (oh my!, how awful and perverted and sinful of you. Good Job, your growing up) Nothing could be more helpful to opening your mind than turning off the lights and making it find its way out of the cave. This is one of the greatest films I have ever had the honor of watching. To not have been given critical praise in America only goes to show how conservative and closed minded a people we are. I feel for my future and that of my children if this pattern continues. But enough of my ranting and raving. See the movie, be amazed and think.
Rating: Summary: Simply, a materpiece from the master Review: Just amazing. Deceptively simple in plot, long on 'aura'. A visual treat, and a display of craft to present a challenge to generations of directors to come. Excellent transfer, great sound. Many, many people will NOT enjoy this movie, but if you love an exceptionally well-crafted work, and are willing to look into it a bit, I do not think yhou will be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: eyes wide shut Review: The title says it all keep your eyes wide open because you will get bored so quickly they will slam shut. LONG AND BORING FILM for sale any takers. If all you want to see is Nicole and Tom well that's ok if you want to waste your hard earned cash its ok if you want to stay awake do not waste your money. Sorry guys you completely lost the plot.
Rating: Summary: Kubricks last is yet a vison of reality Review: no other director could of made this movie happen the way it did but stanley kubrick. in his last directing role. stanley takes us on a journey with tom cruise and nichole kidman through the world of self discovery and sexual lifestyles of todays society. there are millions of terrific points to this movie but one i like to point out is to watch what a great actor tom cruise has become from his stereotype roles in top gun and days of thunder. i recommend any kubrick or cult film fan to try Eyes wide shut.
Rating: Summary: A fine thin-line between dreams and reality Review: I feel that "Eyes Wide Shut" was the most thought-provoking film of 1999. While certainly not Kubrick's best, it is a film worthy of further contextual analysis. I own the DVD, and have watched the film nearly half-dozen times since I purchased it, and discover something fresh with each new viewing which eluded me in a previous viewing. Kubrick's films are meticulously crafted, and I knew that if the story did not appear to have a whole lot of "logical consistency," then there was probably a deeper subtext that I was possibly missing. The film does appear to be drifting between two states of reality, but what makes it tricky, is that it is often difficult to draw a distinction between either-Namely, is it Tom or Nicole's? Which is real, which is a dream? Often times, dreams are chaotic, confusing, and don't commonly subscribe to our linear temporal concepts, which is why the film appears fragmented. It simply plays like a dream. Alas, I do believe that this film is a bit to cerebral for contemporary viewers, and demands more than the common movie-goer is accustomed to. I do sincerely believe that this film will find wider acceptance in the coming decades, once it is further probed and discussed. This film does carry the stamp of a true cinematic mastermind who was well ahead of his time.
