Rating: Summary: Unfortunately I had to give it at least one star Review: I'll keep it simple. Don't waste your time. This was the worst movie that it has ever been my displeasure to view in a theater. By the end of the show I wanted to strangle whoever it was banging on that [...] piano! If someone other than Kubrick had done it would have went the straight to video route.
Rating: Summary: captivating and engrossing Review: The story of a curious young couple's thoughts and dreams of extramarital sex, and the dark and complicated feelings of naivety and guilt that follow. The usual Kubrick sharp photography, lots of bright yellows and whites, and strange acting characters (hilarious the way they repeat the dialogue throughout, in a slow non-believing manner, as if to question everything being said). The suspense mounts when the young Doctor (blindly) walks in on an erotic satanic ritual. Curiosity almost killed the cat? .. To say the least. Sometimes crashing a party can be deadly. This is an excellent movie. Both Cruise and Kidman are fantastic under Kubrick's control. He was, no doubt, a genius.
Rating: Summary: Kubrick's dullest film Review: Kubrick was, first and foremost, a master stylist. That's why Space Odessey and Clockwork Orange are among the best movies of all time. Unfortunately, Kubrick lacked compelling subject matter for his last feature and as a result, it meanders in a most pointless and laughable manner through lush NY interiors as it follows the silly intrigues of a bored yuppie. The suspense and danger in this shallow movie couldn't hurt a fly. Who cares if the girl at the orgy overdosed or was murdered? Or if he almost avoided sleeping with a hooker that had AIDS? In the end, all we're left with is a picture of a few bored (and boring) urban types who chicken out and run back to their safe bubbles after coming in contact with an alternate life just as shallow as the one they tried to leave. Kubrick tries to build some sort of expectation through the limited dialogue and plodding pace of the film, but if you're dumb enough to be taken in by that when there is actually no substance behind all the tension, then you might even be dumb enough to praise this sleeper as art. Kubrick never should've been allowed to write a suspense flick. D+
Rating: Summary: KEEPING EVERYONE'S EYES WIDE OPEN Review: Cruise plays Dr. William Harford, who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage and may even ensnare him in a lurid murder mystery after his wife's (Kidman) admission of ... longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. Graceful tracking shots, controlled pacing, and startling images: bravura traits that make Kubrick a filmmaker for the ages are here to keep everyone eyes wide open. Does this make any sense? Well if it does, then you might understand and enjoy this movie.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't you spot his wife at the orgy??? Review: I kept looking for her. Of course all the guests were wearing masks... but... somehow I thought that was the whole point of the film. That the Tom Cruise character (as the surrogate for all of us) has lived with certain notions of *how things are*. This film is about the unraveling of those notions. Yes, Doctor, your rich friends have secret parties that you can not imagine. Oh and yes, your wife has been involved all along.
Rating: Summary: A SEXY STORY! Review: I love this film.It is Stanley Kubrick's best yet.To bad he passed away.A sexy story! It has some drug use and lots of suduction.WARINING:THIS FILM IS NOT FOR CHILDREN FOR LANGUAGE,STRONG SEXUAL CONTENT,AND LOTS OF NUDITY.Kidman also gets BAD in this movie.
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: I saw this movie twice. The only thing I didn't like about it was the same note the piano played over and over. They could of ditched that. Can someone help me? I am looking for the movie that Tom Cruise made in Muscatine Iowa. Does anyone know the name of it? If you do will you please email me or at least post it here? Thanks.
Rating: Summary: The CULMINATION of LIFE's WORK...A TRUE MASTERPIECE Review: Kubrick's last film should not be toyed with. It is a movie that left me in awe for many days after I saw it. I had to see it three more times just to fully unerstand it. If you REALLY love Kubrick and truly can understand what he means in all his films, then you will realize that this is a truly phenomenal work. From the very first scene, the entire film is full of beautiful music, breathtakingly beautiful women, intrigue, mystery, and flashes of both surrealism and super-realism side by side, reminding one of a dream (or nightmare); thus adapted from Schnitzler's novel «TRAUMnovelle». If you are captivated by the very first scene (with Shostakovich's waltz and Nicole Kidman's bare back exposed) as I was, you will undoubtedly enjoy the entire film. It is in one word "beautiful". This movie was not appreciated by the majority of the critics, but that is simply their problem. This movie is NOT for everyone; a bit too philosophical and psychological for some (A Jungian-Freudian mix), and also a bit too graphic for others. Nonetheless, all the senseless hype aside, Kubrick's last film is indeed the culmination of a great director's lifelong work. You will either despise this movie or regard it as a great work after seeing it.
Rating: Summary: "CITED OEDIPUS" Review: PLOT: We follow Tom Cruise through what is potentially a Walpurgisnacht - not quite a "Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" [This may be a wonderous future vehicle for Cruise and Kidman] His journey is fascinating - like Everyman he meets various temptations on his way through Kubrick's never-ending vision of New York after dark. Contemporary Washington could be a better choice.
Rating: Summary: A Mystery of questions. Review: Raises a string of mysterious questions,to be explored by the viewer. One that has generated much talk among myself and friends, is the possibility that nicole may have been one of the attendees at the costume orgy. Look closely at nicole peering up at Tom as he returns home, the mask on her bedside- did she pick it up at the orgy? Is nicole really the red head who worns Tom to leave the orgy? Is nicole in fact part of this secret society? View this awsome picture a few times and see how it begins to unravel before your wide eyes. It's an engrossing masterpiece from the master himself, Kubrick.
