Summary: Wonderful Film -- Terrible DVD
Review: This is a marvelous film that gives an accurate account of life in the middle of the 20th Century in the Southern US. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD. And what did we get? The usual horrible ARTISAN shoddy worksmanship. The DVD has no extras, not even a trailer. It is in full frame instead of widescreen. But most important, the print is terrible. It is very soft, as if it is a copy of a copy. There is no sharpness to it at all, and colors bleed. It is as bad as Artisan's "The Quiet Man." Artisan should not be in the DVD business, as they have no concept of quality. I would be ashamed to work there.

Summary: The Long Walk Home
Review: This movie paints a very vivid picture of the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. Odessa Cotter, a maid, is in the middle of the beggining of the civil rights struggle. One can see the differences between a white and black family during the 50's. Odessa struggles to support her family and the boycott. One feels the tension between the two groups, and the violence that sometimes resulted. I saw this movie in Morality class, and I'm glad I had the chance to see it. Because of this movie I am more aware of the civil rights struggle and all of the hardships that came with it. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to enrich their knowledge and enjoy a great movie.

Summary: Best movie that I have seen about the bus boycott
Review: This movie really touched me. It really gave you a feeling of what these people involved were going through (on both sides of the fence). Every other film dealing with the bus boycott is all about Rosa Parks, and when that happens you really don't get a real sence of what the boycott was really like. This is one of the only films about the bus boycott that dosn't have the name "Rosa Parks" strewn through out the whole movie. Two Thumbs Up, Way up!

Summary: A great movie...but lacked a little substance - 4.5 stars!
Review: This movie tells a great story and Sissy Spacek and Whoopi Goldberg give first rate performances. But...

The character development is just a little weak and the plot could be a wee tiny bit stronger. These are minor points, though.

The story of desegregation bears retelling again and again. This movie tells one such story very well.

The close-up of Odessa's (the maid) bloodied, blistered feet show a microcosm of the sacrifice black women made as they walked several miles each day to support the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. That one scene gave me a whole new view of the bus boycott and a deeper appreciation for what people of color endured to win this fight.

My teen daughter and I watched this movie together. It has the capacity to open up a lot of dialogue about "the way things used to be."

I'd highly recommend it, but it's not one of those movie's you'd watch again and again.

Summary: The Long Walk Home
Review: This story really captured the strong points of the racism that went on in the time period. It really opened up my eyes to the utter volgarity and other things that went on. How people were treated and how things have changed for the better. It's a great movie

Summary: A heartfelt film w/Whoopi
Review: This was a great film showing the true struggles of the common man during the Civil Rights movement. On one end it showed that people can be really ignorant but on the other end it demonstrated that people CAN change for the better and not all hope is lost. This film should also serve as a reminder to students like myself that we are very fortunate for the amount of tolerance we have today. Not only did famous protesters like Rosa Parks make a difference, but the "little" voices of everyday people like Odessa Cotter was vital to the movement. This movie was on to remember and im glad my teacher selected such a good film. Whoopi Goldberg is also my favorite actress in the whole wide world.

Summary: UNEXPECTEDLY GREAT!!!
Review: When I first rented the movie, I thought that Whoopi Goldberg would be another funny Corrina. I was pleasantly suprised at the serious tone of the movie. This remarkable film shows the skyrocketing racial tension in 1955 Montgomery. However both blacks and whites are treated like human beings in the film and I believe it is accurate. Spacek is at her best and Whoopi is one great drama actress. Both Odessa and Miriam are hardworking women, they love their children very much, and are optimistc in increasingly racist and violent surroundings. A must see for anyone interested in Civil Rights and American History

Summary: COURAGEOUS WOMEN
Review: When we think about the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of the Civil rights movement our minds immediately think of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Park. Very seldom do we think about the ordinary citizens who were responsible for taking risks in overthrowing segregation.

The Long Walk Home focuses on two women, one Black, the other white, in their struggle to come to turns with a movement about to turn their lives upside down. Meet Miriam, the typical white southern woman who lives to keep together her home. Of course her maid, Odessa, is the one who keeps the home. Miriam is not a bad woman. Her maid is just like family but talk of the boycott would be an inconvience to the family. After all, who will clean the shouse. Odessa, is the maid. She is a strong woman and loves her family. She is also tired of the mess going on.

Whoopi Goldberg and Sissey Spacek give sterling performances of women who are forced to change the way life has always been. Both must take risks and with those risks comes a price. Both of these women have outdone themselves in displaying the emotions, anger and disappointments in their lives. Every moment you feel their pain and sympathize with their dilemma. This movie is a testament of the strong southern Black and white women who took a stand for justice at the expense of defying their community. Share with them their story. You will be deeply moved and grateful for their sacrifice.
