Rating: Summary: makes me think... Review: I saw Uprising tonight, and as I was seeing this *fine* work of Hollywood, I could not help but realize that the methods undertaken by the Nazis (invasion of cities, evacuation, taking away of children, demolision of buildings, barbed wire, getting people naked) as well as the emotions of the Jews (need for resistence, honourable death, despair, need to smuggle arms, sacrifice) are all reversed today and it's the state of Israel that is acting strikingly similar to the Nazis with respect to the Palestineans.I thought, why watch fictional movies like this when the real version is on the news every night (at least in my part of the world, I don't know about America). It is a shame that the U.S. is backing up the second Nazi regime whose war crimes are no less than the first. If this film touches you, and the goings-on in the Middle East don't, humanity has one less human.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational but historially inaccurate Review: "Uprising" is an inspirational story on survival and resistance under impossible odds. However, the film is far from a historical presentation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The producers filled the film with half-truths and misrepresentations of the Polish assistance to the Ghetto Uprising. The Polish resistance or AK provided any available support even though their own munitions were scarce and crude in comparison to the well-armed Germans. One of the famous Jewish fighters, Marek Edelman, stated that the uprising would not be possible without the needed support of the Polish resistance. In addition, Poles provided valuable knowledge on military tactics along with techniques on bomb assembly and other weaponry for guerilla warfare. The credibility of the film is lost when the general Polish population is displayed as a disconcern when the ghetto burned as exhibited during the communion service in the Catholic Church. It is well documented that the Poles were filled with horror, sorrow, fear and helplessness towards the plight of the ghetto Jews. In reality, closing all Polish Catholic Churches would be in the best interest of the Germans since Churches provided a multitude of hiding places for Jewish survivors. The film falsely depicts the Polish population as well-fed and prosperous under the German occupation while the ghetto suffered. Starvation was the norm for both Jews and Poles while Poles lived in constant fear of unexpected rounded-ups where Poles were murdered in the street or sent to forced labor camps. Normal life in Poland became upturned and violated. Another impossible scene shows an anti-semitic Polish secretary in the Pawiak or German gestapo headquarters. In reality a great deal of Polish AK blood was spilled on the floors of the Pawiak and a Pole would not be trusted in the Pawiak. Both Poles and Jews suffered the same loss of life by the murder of 3,000,000 Polish Catholics and 3,000,000 Polish Jews during World World II. The complete ignorance of Polish sacrifice for the ghetto Jews is a disgrace to the Polish Righteous Gentiles. The largest number of RighteousGentiles, recognized in the Vad Vasham museum in Israel, are from Poland. In summary "Uprising" is an inspirational film on human resilience against impossible odds but is extremely deficient in historical and factual content. The heroism of the Jewish ZOB resistance fighters offers a great amount of content to motivate viewers. However, the producers of "Uprising" resorted to degrade the immense sacrifice of the Poles to elevate the suffering in the Warsaw Ghetto. Shame on Jon Avnet and his team by resorting to these low and unscrupulous tactics.
Rating: Summary: Good story that didn't capture the horror! Review: Although i find this story to be of historical fact--- it played out to clean and hollywoodish. The horror of this event in todays video revolution, does no where close to showing the down right dasderdley event of starving the jews into getting on the trains for transport to the death camps. Amazing how everybody looks fit as a fiddle, washed and clean. When dead people were being striped and left in the street for burial!!!! People were dying in this place every day---a lack of realism deturs from getting to excited over this video! Even though this story needs to be told, there r better movies to get a full understanding of the plight of the jews in warsaw!!
Rating: Summary: A little known story, a great TV film. Review: Not many people know this story, and I must say they got it as right as any other war film. This tells the story of Jewish fighters who held of the Germans longer than the entire army of Poland in the Warsaw Gherro. It shows all angles of the resistance effort, and is well directed by Jon Avnet. It is a harrowing tale and well worth watching for any war film fan, history buff, or well anyone. Excellent acting from a stellar cast including Hank Azaria, Donald Sutherland, Leelee Sobieski, David Scwimmer, Stephen Moyer, Jon Voight, Cary Elwes, Radha Mitchell, and many more. Not rated probably would've been PG-13 maybe an R.
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth Watching. Review: After reading some of the other reviews on this film, I felt that I had to throw in my two cents. Overall I feel that the movie was very well done. This was not a documentary, I wouldn't expect all of the scenes to be "factually correct". Yes, I know that others suffered from Nazi oppression, however this is an heroic tale, and I feel that the spirt of the Ghetto uprising was well portrayed here. Having read two novels, and one factual account of the uprising, I think for the most part they got it right. My only objection was the scene in the Catholic church on Easter Sunday. There was no need for it, and I thought it detracted from the spirit of the film. Were the filmmakers trying to infer anti-semitism from the Catholic Church? Ah well, other than that, I loved it. This is, unfortunately, a little known historical event. Anything that sheds light on the heroism of these people in standing up to evil, and impossible odds, is okay in my book.
Rating: Summary: Okay plot, engaging, but lacking in quality of acting Review: I found my reaction to this movie to be mixed. The fake accents were problematic for me, and some of the actors ought to stick to sitcoms. However, I believe it was an important story to be told, and regardless of its actual historical merrit, interesting. It certainly engaged me for the time period where I was viewing it, the scenery was excellent. I certainly became interested in the actual historical facts after watching it. I think it is a movie worth watching.
Rating: Summary: Uprising was the best. Review: I thought Uprising was awesome. I saw the movie on TV in September. This movie is reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, But has a more hunted fell. The movie portrays the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, with amazing acting. I though it was one of the best movies I had ever seen.
Rating: Summary: Important story adequately told. Review: A fine, if too well feed cast, did a good job portraying the suffering and resistance in the Warsaw ghetto. I would have liked a little less focus on the Germans Hipler and Stroop and more attention paid to the diversity of political thought among Polish Jews. I found the line wondering why the allies did not bomb Eastern Poland to disrupt the Holocaust a little disingenuous. In spring 1943, the Western Allies were in Britain and the Russians were preparing the defense of their recaptured Kursk; there were no aircraft that could make the round trip. Even in late summer of 1944 when the Western Allies wanted to drop supplies to the those fighting in the other tragic uprising in Warsaw, it was not possible since the Russians refused to allow the pilots to land in the territories they had captured in their sweeping 1944 summer offensive. In wars there are always mistakes and missed opportunities but the Allies were fighting as fast as they could and at great cost.
Rating: Summary: Not very good. Review: Big-budget miniseries chronicles the Jewish ghetto uprising against the Nazis in Poland. Director Jon Avnet tries his best to make everything seem authentic and the production values are indeed quite high, the battle scenes are well-executed and even a bit graphic, but the film suffers from terrible dialogue, a lack of dramatic power, very little suspense, and a handful of cringe-inducing scenes (Take, for instance, the scene where one Jew chooses to play a practical joke on his fellow mates by dressing up as a Nazi and walking into a room full of other Jews with guns and telling them, "You are under arrest!")(This is the kind of person a resistance group could do without) * 1/2 out of *****
Rating: Summary: Terrible. Review: This NBC miniseries is an inept portrayal of the Jewish uprising in Poland. Many of the facts are incorrect, the dialogue is absolutely horrendous, and almost none of the characters are particularly sympathetic. Just as bad is the fact that Jon Avnet seems perfectly fine ripping off Spielberg's style during the battle scenes. The movie may have had high production values, but that means nothing when there is absolutely no dramatic impact.
