Rating: Summary: One Awesome Mom Review: O.K. ladies, you have to see this movie. Yes it is very sad, like a "Terms of Endearment" kind of sad, but there is so much to see and learn. Meryl Streep plays this awesome mom that is probably the model homemaker, who through during her whole sickness is still the anchor of her family. This is a great movie for young girls to see so that they may get a better understanding of their moms. Meryl's character through the whole movie teaches us all to appreciate every little thing in life, to make the best of every moment, holiday, and relationship. The best quote from this movie, "More IS more". Great scenery during the holiday shots, wish I lived there. Get this movie for those rainy days when you want to just relax in your p.j.'s. Enjoy
Rating: Summary: GROSSLY UNDER-RATED Review: This is one of the best films of 1998. Not only did it show what it is like to know someone who has cancer and what he/she goes through, it also examined the importance of being a careerwoman or housewife--a concept often lost in contemporary America. I was also able to relate to the Ellen-character who initially believed she was like her father and had nothing in common with her mother, only to discover in the end that she is like BOTH parents. Let's face it--young people see the world in black and white. (Wasn't it appropriate that Ellen always wore black in the movie? I know, I know--she dressed that way because it was an 80s, New York thing. But it was still appropriate nevertheless.) Ellen was no exception. She grows up when she finally sees the world in "greys," which I also did a few years back. If anything this film will teach young people not to see the world only in black and white or "I'm more like my mother than my father" or "I want to be a careerwoman but not a housewife," etc. By the way, the performances were excellent. This is one of Meryl Streep's best performances! Forget about whether Gwyneth Paltrow or Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar--Meryl Streep should've won it.
Rating: Summary: This movie helps remind you of what's important in life! Review: This movie, in dealing with a child's relationship to her parent's and her mother's fight with cancer, reminds the viewer of what is most important in life.
Rating: Summary: A plesant, vigerating movie Review: One True Thing is one of my top 10 movies of "98-99". Meryl Sreep is absolutely excellent . This movie is really sad but the whole movie bases on home and family it relates to any family who parent are sick or divorced. And thats why I love One True Thing. It's a awesome movie.
Rating: Summary: a women tearjerker! Review: im usually not into these type of movies, but if your going to grow up to be a movie critic you have to have see and comment on several different movies.my mom was actually the one that rented it, but she asked me to watch it with her, so i did.and i was amazed. i actually liked it, it was sad and my mom cried at the end,but i liked it.
Rating: Summary: Book is better Review: Although I love Meryl Streep, I am puzzled by her Minnie Mouse portrayal of the dying mom. Absent were the layered surprises, for in the book her daughter discovers a more complex human being. This mom had the complxity of a paper towel. The movie's mom-as-Vassar-girl was at odds with the non college educated character in the book: The class issues where the daughter fancies herself intellectual superior to her mother was the centerpiece of the novel. This would have been a story worth telling, but Hollywood apparently could not resist larding up the film with images of Spode china and Chanel-suited Stepford neighbor ladies that seemed almost comical. By the way, in the book - The One True Thing is between a mother and daugher, not a feckless husband.
Rating: Summary: Very Realistic Review: I loved this movie! My mother had cancer and I had to take care of her. I had to become my mother. Like the daughter does in this movie. It hit very close to home. Meryl Streep looked just like my mom did while she was sick. Even the way she moved and talked! It was very hard to watch. I wish everyone would watch it to see what families and people with cancer go through! Overall it was very good and realistic!
Rating: Summary: Depressing Review: Alright, I love Meryl Streep, but this movie was too sad, too slow, and just plain BORING! Maybe I didn't like it because the subject matter hit too close to home, but it just kind of dragged on, and the dialoge didn't help. If you like weepy movies that will make you cry, then this should be your thing. I for one, just couldn't take it. I'll have an action movie over this rubbish any day.
Rating: Summary: STREEP IS OUTSTANDING! Review: I just rented this movie last night.. Meryl Streep is an amazing actress..and William Hurt was excellent as the "not there" husband.. it was sad but for me , it wasn't a tearjerker.. you knew what was going to happen in the end...i was unsatisfied with the ending.there was some questions that were never answered.. all in all, i would recommend this movie...
