Summary: A Flat and Dull Love Story That Takes Too Long to End
Review: Dull and dreay describes this film about an middle aged woman who can`t get over her Husbend`s death finds companiship with a lonely bakery worker who hides a secret he can`t read, And as she teaches him how to read they both fall in love. De Niro tries to shake off his bad boy gangster image with poor results as for Jane Fonda she has done much better in the past. Weak story can`t be helped much by the weak performaces of the two leads. Which rather surprises me I thought Fonda & De Niro would have sizzeled on screen but as it turns out they didn`t have the spark.

Summary: Ok, nothing spectacular
Review: Generally ok all around. I really didn't think it was all that great compared to Robert De Niro's other films (I can't help but compare his films to one another), but just as a movie, not a De Niro movie, it's all right. The story is, as Maltin puts it, "flat and underdeveloped," but it's kind of sweet in a way.

Summary: Heartwarming!
Review: I fell in love with Jane Fonda many, many years ago when I first saw "They shoot horses, don't they?", and since then I've never missed a movie featuring this beautiful lady. I was amazed when I first saw de Niro in... no, as a matter of fact I can't even remember, since I've actually seen all, I mean ALL the movies de Niro has made so far... Yes, you're right, these guys are two of my favorite actors and so, I was really curious to see this movie, although I knew beforehand that I wasn't going to be mesmerized. And in fact I wasn't, but I liked this movie anyway and I still watch it every time it happens to show on TV. This is the kind of movie you need to watch just for a change, as the vast majority of movies released in the recent years are about gangsters, terrorism, doomsday, the end of the world, aliens, money, betrayal, unfaithfulness, cheating and so on. Having said that, this movie reminds me of "Falling in love", although I like this one better. These two are not the kind of movies you'd like to see an actor such as de Niro in, since he has built his reputation playing don V. Corleone, J. La Motta, A. Capone or T. Bickle, and I have to admit that J. Fonda is much more at ease in this "down to the ground" kind of character, just as M. Streep is much more at ease than de Niro in "Falling in love". Anyway, all in all an interesting movie, although I can't imagine what could have possibly crossed in more than 20 million american illiterates' head when they've heard the final line of the movie: "Everything is possible, Iris, everything is possible!" - shoot to the screen or believe that miracles can happen?

Summary: Skip this yawner
Review: I had several problems with this movie when it was first released:

By then, Fonda's fitness guru image rendered her ludicrous for a frumpy role such as this one. I didn't buy it, and, apparently (judging by the b.o.), no one else did, either. As she quickly learned, you can't have it both ways.

At the time this movie was released, Barbara Bush had made literacy her pet First Lady cause, so the timing made the whole production feel like a trendy bumper sticker.

Who can watch DeNiro refer to someone as "Iris" and not be distracted into thinking of "Taxi Driver"?

I can't remember much else; I was probably asleep.

Summary: A well-acted love story about real people
Review: I have to admit I have a thing for Jane Fonda and her blue eyes and endless different facial expressions. Her acting in this movie was no disappointment. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Robert DeNiro like the rest of the world but his acting was also very good. I actually related to both characters. I can forgive some weaknesses in script and editing in a movie like this. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a break from the movies about rich, extroardinary people doing unbelievable things. What a nice concept that two shy, no-longer-twenty-something ordinary people can help each other conquer their fears and weaknesses in an honest relationship. While most movies portray the guy getting the girl with relative ease, Stanley has to struggle.

Summary: A very satisfying movie
Review: I love this movie. In a world where movies consist mostly of horny school kids and people who only believe in multiple sex partners and drive by shootings, this movie is such a refreshing change. It concentrates on normal people just trying to make lives for themselves. This is a movie that probably most of middle America can relate to on some level. Jane Fonda is beautiful, and Robert DeNiro is so sweet and endearing. Yeah, it's a chick flick...you got a problem with that?

Summary: It's okay...
Review: I was flipping through the channels at home and I came upon this movie. What interested me was that Robert DeNiro played a man that was unable to read and write. I am a special education teacher that teaches learning disabled students. I thought that the movie could teach them how important reading and writing was in every day life. I think that for this purpose the movie has served me well. The story, etc. was okay. 8th graders were interested enough to watch it through.

Summary: Learning the A-B-C's of love!
Review: I'm one of Robert De Niro's biggest fans, and this underated gem gives you a rare chance to see him in a role where he's not hitting someone with a baseball bat or shooting everyone in sight! Credit for this excellent film should not only go to the great cast and director, but also to Harriet Frank, Jr. and Irving Ravetch, who wrote the awesome screenplay.

Jane Fonda plays Iris King, a depressed woman whose husband has only been dead for eight months. She has two kids, one of which is a pregnant teenager who's rebelling against Iris. Robert De Niro plays Stanley Cox, a troubled man who can't take care of his own dying father because he can't read or write. Stanley and Iris work in the same factory and when they finally meet, a friendship begins.

When Iris learns about Stanley's problem she decides to teach him how to read and write. Stanley, meanwhile, tries to teach her how to let go of her past and to love again. The close friendship between Stanley and Iris slowly blossoms into a romantic relationship that will change their lives forever. Will Iris be able to let go of her past, and will Stanley learn to read and write while romancing Iris? Watch this gem and find out!
