Summary: Unlike nothing else - A masterpiece
Review: Not really much space to write all the great things about this jewel of a movie. Great story. So many themes. Absolutely incredible dialogue. Every word counts. Great performances. No wonder it got so little promotion, it's too intelligent for the big studios to care. Go rent it, and then buy it. It opens your mind, it takes you to think what really matters.

Summary: Kiss the sky is an interesting movie
Review: Ok, I admit it. Put Billy Petersen in a movie and I am hooked. The movie is interesting. Jeff (William Petersen) and Marty (Gary Cole) decide they need a change from the pressures of their everyday life. The two best buddies head off on a working vacation and wind up in an opium den where they hear a man talking of an island where you can kiss the sky. Longing for the days when they were young and free, the two head out to this paradise and wind up falling in love with the same woman. She goes from Jeff to Marty and then spends a night with both of them, which makes for the interesting part of the movie. Between romps in the sack, Marty and Jeff decide to build a haven for others like themselves that need a place to go, a place to be free. Fighting the language barrier, slow arrival of materials, and the coming monsoon season, Jeff and Marty take their friendship to the edge. The ending was a surprise but appropriate.
This movie made me long for my wild and free days and envy Marty and Jeff (and espically Sheryl Lee).

Summary: Would not recommend
Review: This movie was awful. I kept watching it because I thought eventually it was going to get better but it never did. The plot: two men abandon their wives and children to find themselves, but really all they are doing is chasing young women in the tropics. They carry on a "three-some" relationship with one woman. One guy continues travelling, the other finally goes home to his family but in all his arrogance suggests to his wife she's lucky to have him home for as long as he stays. Do not waste your time - you will wish you had the two hours of your life back.

Summary: Did everyone else see the same movie I did?
Review: Two caveats to this review: It is the first I've ever written, and I saw the move not on a VHS or on DVD, but on HBO.

But come on!

I'm completely stunned by the positive reviews this movie has received here. I thought this movie was overlong, overwrought and, now, over-reviewed. Two whiny guys leave their families to go to the tropics to "find themselves" by smoking opium and hooking up with women?! I could care less where they end up, what they're searching for, or their psycho-sociological babble about "who they are". (Although, I admit I'm a big Terrance Stamp fan and enjoyed his role.)

I simply cannot believe that the 10 (as of today) reviews here are not the director's friends.

Save yourself the time, and avoid this movie. (By the way, if you don't believe me, check out IMDB's rating of this movie: 5.7 stars out of 10, based on 183 reviewers.)

Summary: WHAT IS THE NAME OF THAT SONG?
Review: When I first watched this movie, the introdution song caught my ear. I have been trying my hardest to figure out who does the song, but have had no luck. It is the song that plays while the movie shows all the different masks in the beginning. Can someone please help me figure this one out!?!

Summary: A little clunky, but interesting nonetheless.
Review: Yes, this could be described as a cinematic exploration of male midlife crisis. Yes, it is very difficult to explore deep philosophical ramblings with any great success in a popular film format. And yet. Somehow, I found myself caught up in the story, predictable as it might have seemed. Excellent performances, sometimes riveting dialog, wonderful soundtrack, beautiful locations... and a sexual threesome thrown in for good measure.

Definitely worth seeing.

Summary: Pick a level...and watch it!
Review: You settle down for a nice evening with a home movie and you note when it is over that you haven't touched your beverage or popcorn, and you may well be sitting on the edge of your chair.
In an adventure that begins as an adult/adolescent rebellion against "acting like a man," this story evolves, sometimes gently and sometimes with ferocious leaps, into one of the most spiritual movies you will ever see. The characters are believable. The story involves one of saddness, search, transformation, and reconciliation. The acting is beautiful to behold, and you sense that they really felt what they were portraying. The viewer will feel it too. This movie was recommended to me as being "very erotic." It is erotic,in the sense that a life well-lived is erotic, but it is so much more so. An earlier reviewr recommend that this movie be rented and then purchased. That is exactly what we did in my house.
