Summary: A classic tale of friendship & growing up...
Review: I first saw this movie when one of my closest friends introduced me to it; I'd say she introduced me to dear Anne Shirley. The movie was soo wonderful with beautiful scenery. I like some of Anne's cute fantasies; they're so touching & amusing, such as her disliking her red hair & wishing she were "beautiful with nut-brown hair." I always thought Anne was so cute & I could see that she'd found a place in the Cuthbert's hearts even though Marilla puts on a stern front at first. It's so touching & poignant that Anne, who's spent her life being bounced around between orphan asylums & people's houses as "in service" longs for a permanent home & I could tell that she really wanted to be special in someone's life. I cheered inside when Matthew & Marilla decide to keep her. And what I jewel she turns out to be when she not only excells in school, but brings joy to the Cuthberts' lives, befriends Diana Barry & later saves her little sister's life, & helps Marilla keep her home after Matthew dies. I like the developing friendship between Anne & Diana as well. It's really too bad that Diana's mom is kind of overbearing & at one point blames Anne for Diana accidentally getting drunk. I could tell Anne was really crushed when Ms. Barry forbade Diana to see Anne for a while. I felt bad for Diana & I could tell Anne did too when Diana's mom tells Diana to "stop poring over books so much" & to basically give up her aspirations & settle into a life of housekeeping. I'm so glad Marilla realized that Anne needed to aspire & even though Marilla is rather strict with Anne, she allows Anne to be her own person & never tries to pressure her to give up her dreams to become a "proper woman." Another fave character of mine was Ms. Stacey; she was soo wonderful & really inspired Anne to work for her goals; I loved a lot of the advice she gave Anne, esp. when Anne confides to her about Ms. Barry's awful treatment of her. I'm so glad that Marilla acknowledges that it's an uncertain world & that a girl should learn how to make a living just like a boy; it's too bad Ms. Barry didn't understand that when Ms. Stacey invites both Anne & Diana to aspire for the Queens scholarship. All in all, a wonderful movie about growing up, esp. a girl's coming of age & I say kudos to Anne for staying true to herself!

Summary: The Book Comes to Life
Review: I seldom read a book, love it and then enjoy the movie. Anne of Green Gables is one of those rare treasues where the magic on screen lives up to the magic in the novel. Megan Follows is first rate at portraying lovable Anne Shirley, an orphan girl, who comes to the home of elderly Matthew & Marilla at Green Gables. The screen adaptation follows quite closely with the novel and brings the images and scenery that L.M. Montgomery wrote about alive. This is a great movie to watch as a family, or if you are a fan of the Anne of Green Gables series.

Summary: Almost perfect...
Review: The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the format is pan & scan. I realize this is/was a television production, so perhaps it was never filmed with a widescreen aspect ratio. In any case, aside from that it is wonderful. The picture looks good; I have seen none of the artifacts (pixelization) mentioned by another reviewer-the picture looks fine. I might suggest getting a DVD lens cleaner-I had the same problem with all of my DVD's before I got one, and now I never have the problem.

The sound is pretty good and the extras are nice. The full-length commentary is a treat. My wife and I sat down to watch a little bit and ended up watching over two hours. The director and editor shed a lot of fun light on the production. There is also about 15 minutes of Megan Follows auditioning which is fun. There are a few missing scenes from the version that aired in Germany as well as production stills.

Very nicely done. Widescreen and perhaps more booklet notes would have been nice. A treat. (4 & 1/2 stars)

Summary: A Great Family Film!
Review: I've watched this movie over and over since it came out. It is a favorite in my whole family--especially my dad!! It is an amazingly touching story of this passionate orphan (Anne) who is bitterly mistreated until she finally meets Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who adopt her, and then the hilarious predicaments she gets herself into in the course of trying to grow up.
Prince Edward Island is absolutely beautiful, the acting is extremely good...an all-around amazing movie!! My daughter was just born on October 28, 2001, and I can't wait for her to be old enough to enjoy this movie with me!

Summary: Some dreams do come true...
Review: Anne Shirley is a freckle-faced red headed child lost in the beauty of the day. She escapes the reality of her situation as an orphan in the 1890s by imagining she is a character in a novel or poem. She finds what she imagines about herself to be a lot more interesting than who she really is.

Throughout her life she has always looked for a kindred spirit and has wished she could live on Prince Edward Island where the scenery is tranquil and inspiring.

Spinster Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and her brother Matthew Cuthbert (Richard Farnsworth) are looking to adopt a boy to help on the farm and as fate would have it, Anne arrives on the train instead. Anne gains not only a family, she finds Diana and they become best friends.

When Anne gives Diana currant wine instead of raspberry cordial, quite by accident, she gets into a heap of trouble and Diana and Anne are banned from seeing one another. Anne then realizes that true friends are always together in spirit.

Anne is simply impetuous and at times you cannot help laughing even when what she is saying is quite serious. The first half of the movie is almost a comedy of sorts, while the last half is more serious in many ways.

In the second movie, Anne's new teacher inspires her and teaches her to not only take her studies very seriously, but that she can also learn from her mistakes.

"Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth, Anne. You see, it frightens them. So they put up walls to protect themselves from it. What we must bear in mind is that all these trials and tribulations that pop up in our lives, well, they serve a very useful purpose. They build character as long as we can hold onto the lessons we've learned from our mistakes. Remember, you can always start everything afresh tomorrow."

Anne pays more attention to her studies than boys and Gilbert Blythe does not exactly make a great first impression. Throughout the movie, Gilbert seeks only to talk to Anne and she doesn't realize that his attempts at teasing her are only the way he knows
to get her attention. Gilbert and Anne both excel in their studies and seem destined to be competitors and not friends. Their relationship throughout the movie is very interesting, yet not quite a romance. Anne keeps running from how she really feels and Gilbert is rather patient with her.

A movie that will captures your heart!
Perfect for the entire family.

Summary: Beautiful film, horrible DVD transfer!
Review: My wife forced me to watch this movie, as it's one of her favorites. It was worth it-- good acting, good writing, and very touching. I bought her the DVD for her birthday.

The video quality of the DVD isn't much better than that of the VHS tape, and the picture is compression-artifact ridden. I even purchased the Collector's Edition, hoping that Sullivan Entertainment had remastered the DVD for the new version, but alas, no! Worth getting if you don't already own a copy, or if you absolutely *have* to have the director's commentary, or the deleted scenes, or Megan Follows' audition reel; but you might want to wait until it gets released in the States-- Buena Vista will undoubtedly remaster these with better quality video.

Review: I have read the books of Anne of Green Gables w/ Gilbert and Diana and ofcourse Anne. I have fallen in love w/ Anne and all the characters. I highly recommend this no matter what your age. Once you see this one you will want to see the other 2 movies I guarantee it.

Review: The DVD is crisp and wonderful. And there's lots of fun bonus materials, including Megan Follows' screen test for the part of Anne. I am on pins and needles awaiting the release of Anne of Avonlea. Highly recommended.

Review: If you are interested in the farms, greens, and complications of living on Prince Edward Island before the war this is the movie for you! The plot is so interesting you'll never want to put it away. You'll be just as interested in the next two that you might as well buy those too! Happy Watching

Summary: A DVD Must-Have!
Review: Since it first aired on PBS in 1986, this rendition of Anne of Green Gables has been one of my top three favorite movies. I finally got it on DVD, and it's like seeing it for the first time all over again! If you are a fan of Anne of Green Gables, you will not be disappointed by this DVD. There are so many extras; you get to see Megan Follows' original audition tape, behind the scenes stuff, biographies, and one of the best director's commentaries I have ever heard. If you already own the movie on VHS, sell it on eBay and upgrade to the DVD (assuming you have a DVD player.) You won't regret it!
