Summary: An inspirational boxing story
Review: Denzel Washington stars as the prizefighter boxer Ruben "Hurricane" Carter in this classic movie. This movie is about a wrongly accused man, Carter, who is sent to jail for a murder he did not commit.It is a very intriguing story, because the chances of Denzel Washington actually being in his tight situation are so slim. But he was caught off guard, and subjected to racial and prejudiced trials and law officials. This movie is motivational and entertaining. It brought tears to my eyes, and some parts were also humorous. There was a lot of drama in it, and a lot of story. Ultimately, I think it's a great movie to watch if you want to watch something realistic (this movie was based on a true story).

Summary: "The Hurricane" excels
Review: This is a great DVD. It's about love, hope, faith and the things in life that some people call coincidence that are really the things God uses to keep us from seeing the way he uses the suffering of one to eventually reach many. I guess the big man just doesn't want us to see his miracles too easily. Once you see how many lives end up being touched by a book written by a condemned man, you will understand what I mean. Keep in mind that the book would never have happened were it not for the man's misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the acting, the scene in solitary lockup when Hurricane fights with the personification of good and evil and hope and hopelessness in himself is one of the most gripping I have seen in any movie. Very powerful, as is the overall story. There are many other such scenes in this movie. It's too bad that so many reviewers here do not understand how a documentary styled movie moves along. It requires that you have a bit of an attention-span and willingness to be patient and flow with the story, even if you know the outcome. If you want an action-adventure movie then you should leave this one on the shelf. If you like movies that are truly collectible, and, infinitely watchable, get this one.

Summary: Excellent acting, but one dimensional version of the story
Review: I read The Sixteenth Round in 1988, and anxiously awaited The Hurricane for many years. In short, Denzel Washington did a superb job depicting the rage and transformation of a troubled and complex man. That's the best I can say about Washington and the production. To be sure, The Hurricane comes up grossly short in a variety of areas. First, Carter admitted in a televised interview that he lost fair and square to Joey Giardello. More importantly, Giardello sued and settled out of court. I was deeply disappointed by Washington and others depicting the loss to Giardello as a racist scam. For that, I lost a massive amount of respect for Washington, as I viewed him as an actor who searches for and represents the truth. Additionally, Carter was a thug as a youngster. Did a lot of time in reformatories, and was a gang member. He was dishonorably discharged from the Army, and court martialed four times. By many accounts, he also had a drinking problem. There were also THREE people in the car the night Artis and Carter were pulled over, and Carter was in the back seat. In his last 15 fights before incarceration, Carter's record was 7-7-1 and viewed by most experts to be well past his prime. His best wins indeed were over Emile Griffith, Florentine Fernandez,Georgie Benton, and Jimmy Ellis. He was soundly beaten by Dick Tiger and many others. He wasn't close to being the #1 contender at the time the murders occurred.

Summary: incredible acting and plot, a true story
Review: I love this movie -- it is incredible! It all begins when Lesra, a semi-literate teen being tutored to read, picks up his first book ever and reads it. It is the autobiography of Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter, which he wrote in prison, where he is serving time for a murder that no one has ever actually proved he has committed. Lesra and his tutors take on the case that many have taken on before, and fight for years. During this time, Lesra meets and befriends Rubin as well. I think the true stand-out character is Lesra. He read his first book and feels he has to act on the information he has received to right a wrong. Who has felt that much passion before? It is amazing how they stick to it and see Rubin through to the end. It is also amazing that someone can spend that much time in prison for a crime and be found innocent after so many trials (yet it happens constantly.) I did hope they would show more about Rubin's relationship with his wife but they did not touch upon that very much. Still, an excellent movie you will not soon forget.

Summary: Change the Cover!
Review: The thing this movie needs the most is a new cover! Usually, the cover will give some indications about the movie. This one does not. I have enjoyed most of Denzel Washington's movies and this is yet another. This is a true story which makes you hurt, but not necessarily cry. Such injustice. The transfer is good quality and the cast does an excellent job. The ending gets wrapped up almost abruptly (it takes over two hours to get there, another two minutes would have been better). Overall, a good Sunday night movie.

Summary: The Hurricane
Review: Every once and a while a film comes out that moves you on a deeply emotional and personal level. If you are fortunate, the cinematic experience stays with you beyond the drive home after the credits have roled. "The Hurricane" is one of these rare films that manages to inspire, and affect the viewer in a manner far too films fail to do. The cut I saw of Hurricane was missing the final credits and the colour had yet to be corrected, but the film was and is a masterpiece of storytelling by the acclaimed Norman Jewison. Like many of his films there is a deeply personal story to be told that has far reaching moral, political and social implications. "Hurricane" is the story of Rueben "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongly imprissoned for a crime he didn't committ. The story unfolds from two perspectives, Rueben's and from the perspective a boy named Lazarus, who in Carter, finds a hero in need of salvation. Denzel Washington is memorizing in his role as Hurricane, while the rest of the cast have risen to the occasion. Jewison has made perhaps his best film in decades and maybe his best ever. His committment to telling "a good story" (quoting last year's inspiring Oscar speech) is obvious, as his is committment to social consciousness. He uses the camera as a witness to brutality, history and to one man's salvation and redemption as he explores the life and circumstances that brought Carter and Lazarus together. Like movies such as "Chariots of Fire", "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Amistad", this film manages to involve the viewer on a highly personal level. We see Carter as a human being in circumstances that test him beyond reason. The scene where he tells his wife to leave him because he can't survive prison knowing she is waiting for him on the outside is powerful and moving. This film is worthy of Oscars in every way. As it stands, this film is a credit to the real Hurricane Carter and the journey he took, and to Lazarus who becomes the catalyst in bringing Carter to salvation. With a running time of almost two and a half hours, I suspect it will be a bit shorter when released, but hopefully Jewison and co. will leave most of it as is. Don't let them make you change a thing Norman - you've got a real story here and a fabulous tribute to the power of the human spirit (from two perspectives no less!) Let the power of the story

But remember, in real life, he was exonerated by the courts.

Summary: So Moving
Review: It is one of the most inspirational movies off all time. It is upsetting to know that it is a true story but that is what makes it so gripping. Denzel should have one the best actor oscor for his portrail of Ruben Hurricane Carter but at least he was compinsated this year. If you are a writer than see this movie as it has some very inspiring moments that will make you want to hit your keyboard immediately.

Summary: Worthy of both Praise and Contempt
Review: Is this movie emotional? yes it is. Denzel Washington does a great acting job as usual. His performance is compelling, and intellegent. The movie does a great job of tugging at our emotions, and also conveying how the Hurricane was able to cope with his long stay in jail. What I have contempt for is the very poor character development for the rest of the supporting actors. The movie lumps a group of more than seven Canadians into a group of three, and it never answers the question, what's in it for them. What are the Canadian's motivations? Why are they so keen to believe and work tirelessly to support Hurrican Carter efforts to get out of prison. Director Norman Jewison, does an extreamely poor job of depicting the Canadians motives. Further he doesn't even explain why they helped the poor boy that becomes The Hurrican's pen pal. Because of the weak script, Jewison does not suceed in really pulling in the audience, and the movie leaves you feeling unsatisfied as a result. Others have voiced critism regarding the portrayal of the police. I would agree with them. This movie could have been way better, if some more time was allotted to fleshing out the motives of the characters in the script, and the direction was better. The DVD itself is well worth the 3 stars. There are a few extras, but really not what you'd expect from a movie that received such praise. Check out "The Green Mile" for a much better prison movie.

Summary: Outstanding!!!
Review: The Hurricane was and outstanding film, i think everyone should see it. It goes back to the 60's where white people hated black's. In the movie Rubin Carter was wrongfully accused for a crime he didnt do, and Carter trys to get out of prison, and then comes along some freinds from Cananda who save him, it's awesome!! What ever you do, dont miss out on this great film. You'll love it!!!
