Summary: Outstanding
Review: A poignant tale of redemption. An excellent film. Simple with no gimmicks, special effects, nudity, or gore. Just a wonderful story and fine acting.

Summary: A touching, hypnotic character study.
Review: After five years in prison, Percy Talbot begins anew in Gilead, Maine, where she works at the Spitfire Grill. The hidden wounds of Percy, Shelby, and Hannah bond them together. Actions and words that show the trust that grows between the women is touching. Percy, a grungy, charismatic Appalachian woman, reads The Odyssey in her spare time, and speaks eloquently and simply of her hurts, her strengths, and her observations of human nature. The beauty of New England glows in this story of hidden secrets, hope, redemption, and the power of human love. The characters are so real that, at times, I felt I was watching them on a stage rather than a screen. The lessons of love and reaching out are caught in my heart. END

Summary: Cliched but Alison Elliot is excellent!
Review: Although the movie's positive, hopeful messages are noble, the movie didn't move me. More or less, the movie seems more like a glorified "Movie-of-the-week" you see on TV, with its excessive sendimentality, small town cliches, and contrived plotline. Moreover, I found the Percy character to be often unconvincing for someone who's been 5 years in the prison.

Having said that, I really enjoyed Alison Elliot's acting in this movie. I checked out the movie after seeing her in Wings of a Dove and was literally shocked how differently she appears, talks, is in the two movies. Now, that's character acting! Given the outline of Percy, she gives the character a weight of humility, cautious charm, and most of all, longing and hope without being precious or pretentious. Her tomboyish, slouching walk and mumbling accent were really nice - giving Percy authenticity and depth. I tell ya, this actress can be a star if she wants it.

So, overall, I'd recommend it for Alison Ellison's acting in an otherwise so-so movie.

Summary: It captures the Spirit of a northern New England town!
Review: Having lived both in Maine and in northern New York, I can tell you that the Spitfire Grill captures exquisitely the spirit and essence of a small town in both of these places. Characters abound in these parts of the country --just as they do in this excellent movie, "The Spitfire Grill". This is one of those movies that has a little bit of everything. It is good, clean entertainment that even the kids can watch. It is at times thrilling, at other times heart warming; and it may even bring tears to your eyes. Acting is all around superb! The Spitfire Grill is now one of my all time favorites. Its both in full screen and widescreen.

Summary: A POWERFUL DRAMA WITH A STRONG MESSAGE
Review: I came across this movie watching TV really late one night (or early one morning rather) and when I saw the DVD I had to pick it up. This is a Sundance Film Festival movie (I think it was a winner too) which tells the story of a girl who goes to a small town right after being released from prison. People can't help judging her and have trouble trusting her because of her past, while she spends all her time trying to find a way to start all over again and forgive herself for her past mistake. If you're familiar with the Biblical meaning of the Balm of Gilead then you will find an additional very powerful meaning to this film.

Summary: The colors of New England never fade.
Review: I came upon this film completely by accident years ago. It was being shown on a cable channel and out of sheer boredom, I decided to watch. It is, quite simply, a beautiful story. I couldn't find a fault anywhere. Having grown up in the East Coast, the film depicts New England accurately down to the last fall, colored maple leaf.

We have the small town values and concerns pitted against the dark and mysterious past of a stranger, an outsider. Redemption. Acceptance. Forgiveness. Understanding. The more you need, the harder you'll have to work in order to get it.

Summary: Heartwarming sleeper
Review: I highly recommend this flick. The casting was great. The story was superb and moving. The story of a young woman who comes to a small town and changes the lives of everyone she meets, this film quietly grows on you and leaves you deeply touched.

Watch it with a friend, it's a great film to share.

Summary: it's beautiful but the ending's too sad
Review: I just hate the fact that Percy has to die at the end. Besides, the bond between Percy and Hannah can actually go deeper. However, the actors are great, especially Allison Eliott. She looks like 18 in the movie while she's already 20 something at that time. She looks extremely pure and innocent, unlike in The Wings of Dove.
