Rating: Summary: The works Review: ....I started watching it with an open mind. I could barely relate to the small town or the very mundane characters and plot, but the reason that this is such a fine movie is because a good script, production, and acting, along with the right amount of tension and drama, can create a kind of magic that we have all experienced in special movies, a magic that transcends the seeming ordinariness of what the movie is actually about. "You Can Count On Me" is that kind of movie. It deserves all the praise it has received. It is well-written, directed, has great acting, great humanity, and the ending leaves you fulfilled and uplifted, though there is really no resolution as such. The lead actress carries the movie very well, but she is not too dominating as happens in some movies. I'd highly recommend this movie if you haven't seen it.
Rating: Summary: OK Movie, World's Worst Soundtrack Music! Review: I'm giving this movie a one-star rating, even though the production and acting are pretty good, because I absolutely HATED the shrieky, screechy soundtrack music. It was so bad, I almost left the theater! If you can get past that, it's not a bad movie -- although not as good as many of the other reviewers here would have you believe.
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: I don't write too many reviews about movies, but I can provide a slightly different take on "You Can Count On Me." I write this one because 2 days after I saw it, the feeling still affects me. I can wait for the next movie, and wait and wait. In fact I only saw the movie because my neighbor brought his rental over and said that it was a good movie, nothing more. I looked at the summary on the box and thought, well, this could very well be a loser, but I started watching it with an open mind. Rating: Summary: Put me to sleep! Review: I tried to watch this movie twice and I couldn't finish it. Everyone else must have seen a different movie than I did. The pacing was slow, I couldn't stand the main character and I had no idea where it was going. I felt sorry for the brother and thought that the main character was the biggest hypocrite in the world. Don't waste your time with this one!
Rating: Summary: You can count me out Review: Incredible waste of time and talent. Laura Linney and Matthew Broderick were appealing, but other than that this was two hours of my life I'll never get back. The many positive reviews of this movie have me baffled - basically it is a very long, mostly uninteresting examination of a brother-sister relationship. Quite frankly I could have cared less about their relationship toward the end of the movie. For a good relationship drama go with something more like Bridges of Madison County, Hope Floats, or The Mirror Has Two Faces. Steer clear of this one at all costs!
Rating: Summary: A great family drama Review: If you like movies along the lines of Kramer v. Kramer, you'll enjoy this film. It's refreshingly honest, in that way only non-commercial films are. The brother-sister bond is something most people will be able to relate to, particularly if you have gone through something traumatic together. The brother in this film is someone you want to protect and scream at at the same time, and his sisters struggle to love him and also do what she needs to for her family is touching to watch. Also, Mathew Broderick's turn as her weasely boss will entertain anyone who enjoyed him in Election. Definitely a must see for anyone who enjoys independent films because they alone seem to portray real people. Actually, definately a must see for anyone.
Rating: Summary: You Can Count On Me Not to Recommend This Review: A disjointed, unhappy, dark tale that moves with jerky indecision, and bizarre background music, to a anti-climax. Was the eternally greasy never-do-well bro any more sympathetic than the eternally perky, enabling, overprotective sis? My advice: don't worry about it.
Rating: Summary: Unusual story, good acting, interesting Review: The little boy is very good in this movie. I didn't realize it was Rory Culkin. I'm not familiar with Mark Ruffalo but he was great especially in scenes with Culkin. Matthew Broderick was All Too Real as a boss. The characters are all Smart and have opinions, even the child. This is a rare, intelligent movie that explores important subjects. I can't think of a movie to compare it too, so it is unusual.
Rating: Summary: Engaging film with sympathetic characters... but Review: you can only feel for the characters so much. Sure the two of them losing their parents at such an early age is a tragedy. And it certainly had very dramatic effects on their lives and character formation. However, they are both adults througout the majority of the film and have to be held accountable for their actions. Ms. Linney gives to me what has to be considered her best performance to date as an emotionally immature sister with a 10 year old son. Like most people she has no real clue about what it is that she wants in her own life. Yet she proceeds to denegrate her wandering brother for his carefree nature. A bit hypocritical if you ask me. She talks about her brother settling down yet she jumps from one (stable) man to another (totally unavailable) one. At least the brother is honest about his feelings. Her brother on the other hand emparts more wisdom on a variety of subjects than Ms. Linney's character could ever imagine. And the sad irony is that the grown up brother is an outstanding uncle/father to her son. It makes you wonder how he would have turned out if their parents had been around. When dealing with an utterly important situation (being an uncle) he is focused and well motivated. On anything else he's completely happy go lucky. Although I can't say I really admired either of their characters the film was very interesting and definitely makes you think. Well worth the rental price.
