Review: Antwon Fisher is an amazing story about a troubled sailor. I myself, being in the navy, was very impressed by the way that the movie was portrayed. It actually made me cry! I would recommend this movie to anyone!

Summary: Touching true-life story
Review: Denzel Washington's debut as a director is a real success in this wonderfully written and acted story of a young Navy man.
Antwone Fisher is a child who never knew his father and is abandoned by his mother. He experiences all kinds of child abuse and as a result, he is a very angry young man when he signs up for the Navy. Eventually his penchant for fighting gets him into counseling and his unhappy past is revealed in his sessions,with Denzel Washington as his therapist. The other side of Antwone is that his past hurts have molded him into a strong man who is able to overcome his unhappy childhood and to emerge as a new man. This movie strikes all the right chords. It resonates as only a true story can and carries a message about the strength of the human spirit. The casting is superb and Derek Luke seems born to have played this role. This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

Summary: USUAL DENZEL MOVIE
Review: This movie is the one that should've win Denzel Washington an Academy award, not Training Day. Training day was a good movie, but any decent black actor can play a crazy cop and curse alot. Denzel is too great an actor for that garbage, but that's what white movie critics felt was his best work. Antoine Fisher is a great movie and the storyline is so real. The best thing about this movie is that it shows whites that don't have exposure to black people that we all arn't thugs and gangstas or whoremongers, this movie depicts a child who was physically and mentally tortured by foster parent and overcame this abuse to become a productive member of society.

Review: Denzel Washington makes a magnificant directorial debut in this powerful movie about a young man with a painful past. That same level of energy is expressed in his role as a military therapist. This amazing true story contains enough emotion to inspire the audience to the greatest potentials. It forces people to look within themselves, especially being that the real-life Antwone Fisher wrote the screenplay. Derek Luke makes his triumphant acting debut as Mr. Fisher. His powerful performance proves that is he wants, he'll become the next Denzel Washington, one of the finest actors. The combination of talents from the cast and crew give the audience an experience never to be forgotten.

Summary: Moving!!
Review: The most moving film of 2002 is definately Antwone Fisher. This powerful tale of a guy who overcame all obstacles to acheive a dream and to live free is a trully remarkable one.Clichéd down to the very dialogue, Antwone Fisher isn't much different than most biographical films. Except that this film is actually good, not mistaken for a masterpiece just because "it's sad" like most films are. Antwone Fisher is truly triumphant and life-assuring. A lot of terrific first-timers appear in Antwone Fisher. Derek Luke (who himself has a triumphant story of getting the role) gives a fantastic first-time performance that has set him up to be a very promising actor. Also, Denzel Washington gives his directorial debut (and also his first time directing and acting in the same film) and does a good job of it. I liked Antwone Fisher, so I'm recommending it to you. It wasn't as excellent as it could have been though, but it is a very moving and captivating story.

Summary: Antwone Fisher - Heart wrenching, yet uplifting!
Review: Antwone Fisher is the true story of a young man's life that is extremely heart wrenching, yet uplifting in the end. It is also quite indicative of the times in which we live as it tells the tale of a young man that suffers through a childhood that would've literally destroyed many people, yet Antwone Fisher survived and eventually thrived in spite of his unimaginable childhood! As a directorial debut for Denzel Washington, this movie stands out brilliantly. Given a low film budget and the constraints that were placed on him by filming on a naval base during and after the events of September 11th, 2001, his on screen and behind the screen performances come through in the quality of this film. Derek Luke's performance as Antwone Fisher sets him apart as an outstanding actor who can easily cover the full the range of emotions that are inherent skills among the top actors in the business and he will probably feature prominently in many future roles. The premise: Antwone Fisher is the true story of a young man that begins on a naval vessel as we see Antwone waking up from a blissful dream yet he seems to be terrorized by the dream. He then sets off to take care of the first order of business in the daily life of the military, the public personal hygiene. Young Mr. Fisher's temper at this time is extraordinarily short as another sailor makes a racial slur and he belts him. This action immediately lands him in front of the commanding officer of the ship, for non judicial punishment, which I believe is called a Captain's Mast in the Navy. The Captain, being a good commanding officer, does his best to save Mr. Fisher's career by not having him thrown out of the Navy and instead sends him to one of the base's psychologists to make an attempt to determine where all of his anger his coming from and hopefully help him. Here is where Denzel Washington steps in as the base psychologist and his role most definitely turns out to be much more than being Mr. Fisher's psychologist. Summary: Well worth the time
Review: This was a very inspiring and touching movie that brings to light the negative effects of child abuse, as well as the fear and longing felt by abandoned children. Derek Luke's performance was Oscar-worthy, and Denzel Washington did a fairly good job with what he was given. True, his character seemed a little two-dimensional, but that can be blamed on the script, not the acting. The flashback scenes of abuse used just the right amounts of graphic-ness - the viewer was left wincing and horrified, but not totally grossed out. I especially liked the ending to this film - it was believable, and yet it was still uplifting. So many times in movies today we see unimaginable pain with no end, or are forced to watch contrived sugary endings. "Antwone Fisher" was neither of the above. It was truly inspiring. The only thing stopping this movie from being five stars was the lack of characterization of Washington's character. The script should have either gone deeper into his home troubles, or should have left them out entirely. This was a movie about Antwone, and, especially in the bathroom speech, the psychiatrist's own problems seemed to have been added as an afterthought. That notwithstanding, this was a truly sweet and inspirational movie. Well done.
