Rating: Summary: Who will cry for the little boy.... Review: To say I loved this film is an understatement. This film has really tounched my spirit and I will carry it in my heart forever. As a woman who mentors to young children, I see the scars of the effects of drugs and violence and neglect on our future generations. I only hope that I can make a difference in a lives of the children that I come in contact with. I want them to know that I care about them and that I will always care about them. These children are full of anger and hurt and there are few avenues for them to heal that pain. Antwone Fisher really captures the spirit of the little boys and girls in each of us that just wants to be loved and accepted. How you feel about yourself is so tied to feeling connected to someone or something that feels like home in your heart. I have told everyone that I know about this film and requested that they run not walk to go see it. God Bless you "Antwone Fisher".
Rating: Summary: Antwone Fisher - a great story Review: With all the over-the-top special effects, gratuitous sex and gory violence that directors seem compelled to cram down our throats, what a wonderfully refreshing change Antwone Fisher is! It is what movies once were - a wonderful vehicle for telling a truly remarkable story. Kudos to Denzel Washington for embarking on his directorial career with such class. This story is about the victory of a young warrior on a battlefield that most of us don't even realize exists. Inspiring, touching, sweet, sad -- Antwone's story will move you. It is a movie that can be seen and enjoyed by the whole family. I wholeheartedly recommend going to see this film!
Rating: Summary: Antwone Fisher Review: Antwone Fisher is an outstanding story of someone "pulling themselves up by their bootstraps". We often hear the phrase used, but seldom see the example. In this movie we see the example. I have seen it twice. I recommend it to those I love, and all who are close to me.
Rating: Summary: Superb...slow paced journey...extremely moving.... Review: Enjoyed the movie thoroughly...I commend Denzel Washington for bringing the truth about the struggles of overcoming slave mentality and the truth about the source of anger to the big screens. It is a must see, for all of America. The tears came, yet I kept saying to myself, it is just a movie - and then again - it is more than a movie - it is REAL!
Rating: Summary: Antwone Fisher Review: "Antwone Fisher" is a powerful and moving film. Very true to life although I imagine that the actual process of Antwone's risking finding his "roots" and coming to terms with his birth family was based on more than three psych sessions. There is much to be said for good psychotherapy. More African American women and men suffer untold anguish keeping harsh realities of life to themselves under the misconception of "being strong!" while suffering from illnesses of the mind. There are many benefits to professional intervention. I'm a witness! I especially appreciated the "love scene" in which the audience was spared the explicit details of someone else's interpretation of lovemaking. I think that I will also read the autobiography. You go, Denzel!Ms. M
Rating: Summary: Quietly Profound!!!... Review: Having read the book, "Finding Fish," I was determined to stay dry-eyed through the film--I didn't: tears fell. Antwone Fisher's story as it unfolds on the screen is so profound, so simple, so real, and so understated that it rocked me hours after leaving the theater. A few sour-faces may say that the film was linear and had few "surprises." To anyone, I would shout that the story stands tall. "Antwone Fisher" does NOT need the excessive violence or sex American audiences have come to expect.
Rating: Summary: The Irony of it all! Review: The movie was excellent. It was very well made. The flashbacks allowed detailed yet compressed versions of his past, in order that the movie did not seem too long. Having a similar story in our family, I wondered about how many more untold Antwone stories there are to be told. The irony of it all was that Antwone grew up with the horrible foster family, the Tates. The Davenports on the other hand, would have been wonderful parents to children like Antwone, yet the two spent their whole lives with the pain of not being able to have biological children, instead of adopting. Fortunately, my brother was given up to a good family. He too was born in prison and 50 years later found us.
Rating: Summary: Tear Jerker Review: This is a fabulous adaptation of the book (Finding Fish). You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to see it again, and bring every "mad for no good reason" male that you know! Denzel was his usual bad self, but take a good look at the newcomers - especially Derek Luke in the title role, for you will see them again.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Multiple Debuts Review: To use the word debut in association with Denzel Washington may seem a bit odd, but with this film, "Antwone Fisher", he does just that as a director for the first time. Like a select number of actors and actresses before him, he has demonstrated that he has the capability to execute with great skill behind the camera as well as in front of it. He also plays a strong, albeit a supporting role in the film, and as is almost universally the case, when he is onscreen he is as good as any actor making films today, and has secured his place in the history of great actors ever to have made films. The purest debut performance, on either side of the camera, is a first time feature film actor, and first time as a leading man, Derek Luke playing the role of Antwone. Derek Luke at 28 is a relatively young man with a tremendous future ahead of him if this performance is any indication of what talent he has within. The film deals with some extremely ugly human behavior that of child abuse and Derek Luke knows what it is to be the victim of such deviant behavior in his own life. Denzel Washington would have been branded foolish for choosing an unknown player if this young actor did not give such an exceptional performance, but as the director he stated he did not want the audience to see a familiar face, he wanted the face of Antwone Fisher to be new. And just as he would have been criticized for taking a chance with this unknown actor, he now deserves the same enthusiastic praise for the shrewd choice that he made. As mentioned child abuse (abuse that knows no color barriers of that of gender) is a theme in this film, and it is a credit to the man who directed the picture that he placed such a volatile and ugly human trait on the screen with sensitivity, style, and never lost for a moment the power the subject has to shock and sicken. It must have made for some difficult experiences when creating the film to reproduce such nightmares with the real Antwone Fisher present as well as Derek Luke shouldering his memories as he performed his role. The performance by Joy Bryant as Cheryl is also noteworthy as a strong supporting role for this film, as well as the several different young men that played Antwone Fisher as a child at various young stages of his life. Awards really do not indicate the true merit of a film, but they do have a massive impact on how many people will see a given picture. Even a nomination for an Academy Award can dramatically affect the ultimate size of the audience. The Golden Globe Awards did not select this film for any of its honors but The Academy of Arts And Sciences has yet to even announce its nominations. There are a number of very fine films, actors, directors, and actresses in the top films for 2002, and while this film deserves to be noticed the competition is wide and deep. I hope it does gain the recognition it deserves but don't wait for professional critics and those few members who vote for awards to make their decision. "Antwone Fisher", is as worthy of your ticket money as any film I have seen in the last year, inclusive of award winners from one year ago.
Rating: Summary: breath-taking, original, heartfelt, unbelievable, amazing... Review: this movie is definitely one of THE BEST movies of the entire year...maybe even the 21st century...it's based on the true story of ANTWONE FISHER, who grew up in an incredibly unstable home, and had a very harsh childhood...it shows how he overcame what most would call the inevitable path toward a not-so-bright future...he ended up doing something honorable and worthy...it is a very touching movie, and i definitely had a tear or two in my eye...BRAVO!!! to Denzel Washington for his very successful directing-debut and two thumbs way up to newcomer Derek Luke who gave a surprisingly, one of a kind performance..... this is definitely one of my all time faves!!!
