Rating: Summary: Higher Learning....A Disappointment or Educational Message? Review: Ok, so we got the picture, racism, rape, homosexuality, basically ignorance in society. However, some of the issues were either too cliche' or should have been edited out. The lesbian relationship or lack thereof was way too A-B-C, the rape was obviously not emotionally constructed in certain points and then too emotionally constructed in others, the racial controversy was the same way. At a certain point in the movie which just seems to bounce from storyline to storyline; you just want to close your eyes and wish the credits were rolling...Sorry John but this one is one in which just didn't go in depth as I thought it would. There should have been more passion in this movie and I just didn't feel it...
Rating: Summary: John Singleton's Best! Review: There is only one thing to say: I absolutely loved this movie. Omar Epps was wonderful and the rest of the characters were awesome. Thanks to John Singleton for introducing Omar Epps to the big screen.
Rating: Summary: A Very Enlightening Movie Review: I think this movie was outstanding....Not only does John Singleton show you the ignorance of racism on the parts of both blacks and whites but he went even further as to address the insecurities of women and sexuality and the need to be accepted by your peers....this movie gets two thumbs up....I wish more people could understand his message and pass it on....We all think we are different but this movie proves we're all the same.
Rating: Summary: A SUPERB MOVIE! Review: I think, unfortunately, this movie has depicted what real life is going on around campuses. The people tend to segregate themselves to their own race, etc. Which I tend to see around colleges and universities. I am not saying this happens all the time, but happens nonetheless. In short, this is very very close to the truth about LIFE!?!
Rating: Summary: A movie that is symbolic of black ignorance Review: This movie is a great piece of propaganda. It has very little substance and the plot is transparent and shows the ignorance of John Singleton. Basically the movie displays blacks as wonderful and whites as evil. The movie is your typical hollywood hate propaganda against whites. John singleton lost all credibility with this movie.
Rating: Summary: Apocalyptic Review: I saw this movie when it first came out and was mesemerised by the poise Tyra Banks delivers, sort of a ballance in the midst of all the chaos that takes place. Fishburne also delivers here. Last night I caught it on cable and was drawn to watch it again to the end, I think with the incident at Columbine High in Colorado just a week ago, singleton was either picking up on simillar events in the US that took place back then (95) or had a vision that eventually high school students at schools around the US will take their harbored hatred a step further. I live in a country that was plagued with a secterian war for so long but during it all not a single simillar incident took place between christians and Moslems here, in fact students at the time made an effort to prove the warlords wrong and that co-existance regardless of religeon, color and creed is possible. Singleton's choice of characters demonstrates a great deal of talent especially small doses of fishburne (the only heavyweight in the movie) thrown in the mix so as not to distract the viewers from the main plot. With movies coming out in numbers now, to watch over 90 minutes of film to the end I think singleton did well on this one. I just hope that the Colorado incident was not inspired by the film since talk of Neo-Nazim surfaced in the police reports. I also hope that cable companies by showing it were not capitalsing on the event for more viewership.
Rating: Summary: This pic is perfect for modern society. Review: I cried when i watched this movie it is sad and true. I think it is frightening in the faact the the shocking truth is this movie depicts how so many people are today.
Rating: Summary: Doesn't quite make the mark Review: John Singleton is the most predictable director in the history of movie-making. He has a one track mind in his story lines. In every single movie he 's directed the love scenes are all identical. "Boys in the Hood" wasn't nearly as good as "Menace II Society." "Higher Learning" was no "Mississippi Burning." Learn from these great films, please! I think Singleton can do better and I hope he does someday.
Rating: Summary: everyone must see this to be AWARE of such injustices Review: I had no idea how powerful this movie was going to be for me. Of all the issues this film touched on, the injustices done to the African-Americans was very eye-opening to me. Coming from my perspective as a white college-age female, I had never considered that things went on such as in the movie. The injustice done especially by the campus security officers angered me so much because the movie was so real. After watching it I had a strange feeling inside and a strong urge to make everything better.. in the movie, there was no real closure to the situation but of course there is no definate solution. People are not going to change and the world will always be unfair in some ways and that's why the movie is very realistic. I feel strongly that this movie should be required in some way, maybe in college or something but the issues are such important ones that are overlooked by society and I think it would help if everyone could see this movie because it's very powerful and eye-opening. What I got from it was that I can't change people and can't work miracles, but being aware of things myself is what I can do, and I myself can change.
Rating: Summary: I feel that my review is honest. Review: The movie "Higher Learning" is very relevant to this day and age. Granted the movie does have a lot of mini-storylines that don't get its complete attention, I felt that the main issue was racism. Therefore, the main issue that should have been addressed was the situation with Remie and its repercussions. I think the movie brought out things that the black community at various colleges face.
