Summary: Being Different...
Review: Director Tim Burton's fairy tale, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, is a fine example of just how creative a filmmaker he can be. High atop a mountain, an inventor's (Vincent Price) greatest creation called Edward (Johnny Depp), is left incomplete, after the inventor dies. The final touch would have been a set of "normal" hands. Instead, he is left with sharp metal shears, for hands. Edward is soon discovered by Peg Boggs, (Dianne Wiest) who wants Edward to leave his isolation, to live with her and her family, and to see what the "real" world has to offer. Upon his arrival, the stranger is loved by some, hated by others, and feared by most. As he tries to make sense of everything around him, he finds himself falling in love with Peg's daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder).

Depp traded in his idol good looks to play Edward, and in the process, proved what a good actor he is. There is a real vulnerability to the character, that is conveyed, not through words, but expressions. The transformation is amazing. The rest of the cast freely emerses itself in this world and makes it come together. Burton's very unique production style also gives the film a fairy tale arua. After a bit, you don't really notice that slight "Other World " tilt, because you can totally buy into it all.

The 10th Anniversary DVD offers 2 really good commentaries. The first one by Burton, is well done. You can tell that the film was a truly wonderful experience for him. Especially when he talks about working with his idol Vincent Price. The second is with composer Danny Elfman, about his collaboration with the director and the musical score that he created for the film. The featurette is pretty standard and has what you would expect from it. Rounding out the extras on the disc, are the original theatrical trailer, conceptual art that halped to bring this world to life, and a few television spots

A solid DVD for an underated film. It's message of tolerence for those who are different is one that resonates...but never feels forced or gets heavy handed Recommended

Summary: A well put together film for the true movie lover
Review: In my opinion, Dianne Wiest was the best part of this movie as the believably loving Peg Boggs. The entire movie is full of great acting and cinematography. Great for fans of "artsy" movies.

Summary: I don't get it
Review: I snuck into the theater to see it. Didn't like it.

My biggest question is this. How did Edward go to the bathroom? Number one would seem as difficult and painful as doing a number two.

Summary: New interpretation of the Frankenstein myth?
Review: Edward, the creation of a kindly genius who dies before he can complete his creature, has sharp metal shears instead of fingers. The movie examines what it must be like not being able to touch or feel - it is about being awkward and overcoming it. An entire Florida neighborhood was repainted in pastel colors and augmented by large topiaries in the shapes of penguins, dinosaurs and even Elvis for the imaginative set. Directed by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands displays the same visual power and skewered perspective, combining the real with the absurd where the impossible becomes possible. There is just a tiny problem with the suspension of disbelief - one wonders how Edward handles a trip to the gents without injuring himself.

Summary: Fragile as a snowflake
Review: This is the fantasy tale of a boy (Johnny Depp)who is built by an aging inventor. The old man dies one day, before giving the boy real hands; instead, he has knife blades where his fingers would be. A motherly Avon lady finds him hiding alone in his abandoned castle and brings him home to suburbia to live with her family, which includes daughter Winona Ryder. Edward is extremely shy, never having been around any people, but he is sweet and helpful, and soon the neighbors all love him. He likes Winona, which angers her bully boyfriend, played by Michael Hall (the geek from Breakfast Club).

Diane Wiest as the Avon Lady is just adorable. She is mother earth incarnate; she lives to take care of people and can only see good in others. Winona plays her role in a foggy, teenage haze, not realizing how wonderful Edward is until it's too late. Michael Hall is the villian you love to hate. He is so cruel to poor Edward; partly because he is jealous, and partly because he is just mean.

The star, of course, is Johnny Depp. As Edward, he is painfully timid and longs to be, like Pinnochio, a real boy. His character is so heart-wrenchingly delicate that you ache for him in his confusion over the evil that others do. Even with white make-up and very few words of dialog, Depp proves he is a very talented actor.

The wonderful and quite frail Vincent Price, as Edward's loving creator, is quite likely to bring a tear to your eye, too, if you remember him in his prime.

This completely unique film blends comedy, horror, and a love story to become a modern fairy tale both teens and adults will enjoy. It is a heart-breaker; bring your hankie.

Summary: Awesome Cimematic!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I just saw this as a TV special, and "Edward Scissorhands" just has to be on my favorite movies list. As a matter of fact, after "Nightmare Before Christmas," it is my favorite. Tim Burton and Danny Elfman amazed me again. This movie kept constantly reminding me of "Nightmare," and the story is just beautiful. I think that only Tim Burton could come up with a storty like this.

The story is of a man named Edward who is a creation by an inventer, who, sadly, died right before he could Edward a pair of real hands. He has lived alone for who knows how long in an old castle, with a haunted house interior, but a front yard full of plant sculptures, until the Avon lady comes by, hoping for a sale, finds Edward, befriends him and takes him home. What surprised me was how friendly the neighbors were when they met him. Usually, in recent movies, people freak as soon as thwey see someone like Edward.

I think this movie, like "Nightmare," deserves more than five stars.

Summary: stunning modern fairy tale
Review: This fable has all of the beautiful hallmark visual touches of Tim Burton handled with a truly gentle and loving hand. But it also has a truly sympathetic hero in Edward and a cast of supporting characters that might in some cases be little more than stereotypes, but work wonderfully well to create a touching movie experience as Edward's life is turned upside down and his experiences in suburbia veer from the positive to tragic. The visual colour contrasts look fantastic on DVD. The extras aren't all they might have been but this is a wonderful film that warrants five enthusiastic stars.
