Summary: Native Americans seen as regular americans--not stereotyped
Review: This movie portrayed the modern-day American Indian as people with everyday problems and emotions. Thomas Lights-the-fire was instantly likeable. The sound track is great. The flashback sequences are very well done. I really liked the movie--it was nice to see a movie directed by an American Indian. The PG13 rating was unnecessary. If you have any affinity towards American Indians, you will like this show.

Summary: Don't pass up this wonderful movie!
Review: Like 99.5% of the reviewers, I loved this movie. Of course, I'm a fan of Alexie's prose and poetry and I'm delighted to see his work adapted for the screen. The casting for Smoke Signals is great--the actors who played Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-fire were mesmerizing and the chemistry between them palpable. The ending echoes long after the movie is over. I can't quite grasp where Mr. Maltin is coming from.

Summary: One of the Best "Unseen" Films of 1998!
Review: We loved this film! The actors were superb! We left the theatre feeling that Beach and Adam were personal friends of ours that we would have over for a BBQ! We wanted to know what happened after. It was a rare treat to find a film that left you wanting more. The music was mesmerizing and the story line was a great study in human devlopment and coming of age in a complex world mixing multiple generations and cultures. The love/hate relationship between Beach and his father is one of the best I have seen. SEE THIS MOVIE!

Summary: A wonderful must-see movie
Review: I love this film! It's funny, insightful, quirky and it makes you think. An interesting look at Native Americans in the 1990's. In response to Leonard Maltin's review, Smoke Signals doesn't need fancy filmmaking. It is the only movie I've ever seen where the dialogue was good enough to carry the entire film. Go rent it! You won't be sorry!

Summary: Be Forewarned
Review: Beware of marketing promoting this movie as a "comedy." It is not one. It is really a drama with some witty moments and humor, but not a comedy in the traditional sense of the word.

Having said that, this is a must see - one of the very best movies of 1998. Heartfelt, deeply moving, and a great testimony to friendship and the search for one's identity.

Summary: This is an amazing film. Should be a must see for everyone.
Review: We loved this film. We disagree with Maltin - this is a film of depth and intelligence, humor and sorrow. It is a window into the lives of Native Americans living on reservations told to show the stark reality of this life, but it also shows the courage, pride, resiliance, and the unfailing humor that sustains. It was a wonderful story. This film was not shown in many theaters which is a real shame. We hope it will be made more widely available on cable and VHS so that all the people that did not have the opportunity to see it when it was released will be able to.

Summary: A very honest, gripping but upbeat tale.
Review: A very honest look at the problem of alcoholism among Native Americans. This movie worked on a lot of different levels for me. It teaches about life on an Indian reservation and relationships. Most important, it made me feel good. A must see!

Summary: At last we see a culture through it's own eyes.
Review: Smoke Signals illustrates that our judgements and bias may be the only bond our cultures have. The film was very entertaining, but more than that, it offers us a look at another culture through it's own eyes. Americans often get a glance at other cultures through the romantic or very biased lens of a camera. This film states very clearly that our perceptions of others is usually way off the mark, and given any time to know anyone we see, those judgements can be changed.

It's greatest quality is that it forces the viewer to react to any number of statements made by the characters and then suggests that you examine those reactions and understand thier value.

Great film!

Summary: This movie is excellent, a must see
Review: This is a truly awesome film. It isn't often that we get to see something through a different pair of glasses. Obviously, Maltin had on his regular pair. The movie taught me about Indian life today on the "Res", breaking down many misconceptions. I actually believed the line I'd been fed that Indian life was dead. It's obviously alive and healthy. Thank God. Watch this movie. Own it and watch it again.
