Summary: One of the best tear-jerkers I've seen in years!
Review: What a wonderful movie. Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon are the epitomy of new wife/first wife. Both performances make you think twice before you judge. One minute you're siding with Roberts, the next with Sarandon. Anyone considering marrying (or remarrying) someone with children involved should definitely see this movie and realize that you can (and should) put your jealousies and differences behind you for the sake of the children. If adults act like adults, it makes remarrying so much easier for the kids. The only complaint I have about this movie is the lack of interest Harris' character seems to have as the father. It almost appears as if Roberts cares more for his children than he does. And although I don't believe you need your childrens "permission" to remarry, I do believe that keeping the lines of communication open and discussing the future with them first is important so that they realize that they are still a very important factor in your life. Harris' character could have had a little more interaction with his children. Still, a very worthwhile movie with some very important messages to be learned by all.

Summary: This years BEST!!
Review: I thought the movie was incredibly done. Being a Stepmom for 9 years now, I could really appreciate this movie. I think this is the best movie that Julia Roberts has done yet. I laughed, I cried, but most of all I didn't feel like I was alone anymore. Having a family of my own, and then bringing another family in to my little world was incredibly hard, but knowing that I am not creating a disfunctional family makes me feel better. This is a movie I will, with out a doubt, add to my movie collection!!! Don't forget your kleenex box!

Summary: Wasn't this a Lifetime movie?
Review: Had I known that I would be spending 2+ hours watching Julia Roberts either dropping off the kids or picking up the kids, I would have skipped it. Apparently this is Hollywoodspeak for god stepmotherhood which is measured by the ability to load and unload the critters good-naturedly in a Range Rover. Question: How does one hop in the car from Manhattan at a moment's notice in the daytime to pick up the kids at suburban-on-the-Hudson and not get stuck in 4-hour bumper to bumper traffic? Is there a secret uncongested highway for attractive Yuppies that I am sadly unaware? To be fair, it was provacative on some fronts. (1) The ex-husband must have had SOME fancy job to support a huge New York City loft and a glorious up-state Victorian home equipted with a stay-at-home Susan (2) Which leads me to the second thought - I have nothing against stay-at-home moms, but if anyone needed a job to keep herself occupied and out of Julia Robert's face, it was Susan Sarandon. Her kids were school-age. (3) Julia Roberts justs walks off her high-powered job to yet again pick up the kids. Is it me, but isn't this irresponsible? Call me cold, but doesn't Susan Sarandon have any friends? any paid help? any sisters, moms? (4) The typical dying Hollywood woman (still beautiful with no weight or hair loss) seemed like a tack-on to tastelessly convey the message that the only proper ex-wife is a dead ex-wife. How uplifting! Mercifully Julia Roberts won't have to endure all that wear and tear on her four-wheel drive.

Summary: Sarandon and Roberts Glow; The Film Itself Sags
Review: Well, the good news is that Sarandon and Roberts are such appealing and affecting actors that they are able to carry this fairly predictable film on their backs as long as they can. Sarandon's character is so relentlessly mean to Roberts through the first hour and a half that the ultimate kissy-huggy life enhancing experience we are all supposed to have towards the end defies belief (I mean, if Sarandon's character is such a perfect mom, wouldn't she be at least a little kinder and a lot less selfish/obsessively rude to Roberts, considering that her kids *will* be spending time with Roberts and Harris). Sarandon is such a -- well, you know -- that whatever shortcomings Roberts' character has as a potential mother, you forgive simply because she is so mistreated (Roberts also looks strangely like Barbra Streisand several times; maybe it's the bangs). And compare the kids' "bye mom, we love you" scenes with the comparable Debra Winger Terms of Endearment (incomparable, actually). But it's a big wallow and lots of autumn leaves and Ed Harris' blue eyes and the two women -- be sure to watch this in widescreen/2.35 as I think it will lose a lot in a pan and scan version.
