Summary: A REEL WINNER !
Review: What a forgotten gem....... Everything could not have been made one instance better...... Screenplay, casting, light/photography, colors, settings, all...Quite faithful to the original, and along with the best earlier "Great Expectations" revivals...........Even though given a "R" rating, I would instantly take an alert 12 year-old tgo this, or rent it for home VHS view (who should have read the book), to this - twice (and also to the 1946 version with John Mills)...... I basically don't (didn't before) really like Gwynny Paltrow, or know much about Ethan Hawke..... But..... They are gems, here...... Joe, too, and "Miss Haversham" (Anne Bancroft) and - OF COURSE - Robert De Nero - amazing ...... [This was the film Gwyn P. probablly should have been nominated for, Oscar-wise]...... This movie was, and is the best within the 300 + films I have seen in the last 18 months....... Please, just go rent it.... YOU WILL WATCH IT TWICE, OR MORE....... The musical theme/score, and other songs, too are alone worth the experience......... sclshelton@earthlink.net

Summary: Interesting! 3.5 Stars.
Review: Its worth watching, if nothing else because it is so different then the usual genre. I thought that the movie actually drug in a few places. But overall it was so different that it made up for it. Many psychological elements mixed into the characters behavior. So, if you like that sort of thing with a sprinkle of sexual innuendo then this is not a bad movie. I guess there are other versions of Great Expectations out there.

Summary: A very good film
Review: I watched it with all my family when we rented it - sevrel times actually, because me and my sister kept wanted to "see that part again" and rewinded it...

At the end, my parents said they didn't enjoy it that much and thought it was "just another plain American movie with a happy ending" - but me and my sister enjoyed it very much (altough she didn't admit it - I bet she liked Ethan Hawke almost as much as I did...). I wasn't sure before, but after that movie I decided to make it official that Ethan Hawke is my favorite actor. And after I told my parents that it was originaly a Dickens novel - even they were impressed!

Summary: The whole is even greater than the sum of its parts.
Review: This is one of those films that you don't fully appreciate until you've seen it more than once. It's obvious that a lot of creative effort went into crafting the film's 'look,' score, soundtrack and Finn's artwork. They're all lovely. In addition, the main characters' evolutions are interesting to watch. Each renounces the familiar, flirts with with cynicism, but is ultimately drawn back 'home,' reclaims his/her vulnerability and is 'redeemed.' Highly recommended.

Summary: A TRULY BEAUTIFUL FILM!!!!!
Review: The reason I actually wanted to see the movie in the first place was because Robert De Niro is my favorite actor and Gwen Paltrow looked sizzling hot in the trailer. When I got through 30 minutes of the movie I was captivated. This beautiful film is so artisticly crafted and told. Great Expectations is great.

Summary: Loved the soundtrack...
Review: I enjoyed this modern retelling of the story. Anne Bancroft was wonderful, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawk turned in good performances. I found Ehtan Hawk's performanace a little flat, but I always think his performances are a little flat. I loved the soundtrack. There were several good versions of Beseme Mucho, unfortunately the soundtrack album only has one of these. I am also disappointed that this film doesn't seem to be coming out on DVD.

Summary: Very Under Rated
Review: I saw this movie in the theaters and didn't like it that much. Stay with me... Then after i thought about it a while, I really couldn't stop thinking about it. I saw the movie again, and i think it's excellent. It's just a really really great movie, unfairly ignored by critics.

Summary: The greatest movie from a novel !
Review: I loved Great Expectations. Ethan Hawke and Gywneth Paltrow give exceptional performances in the film. I have always liked Gywneth Paltrow's films, and this is my favirote that she has done. Ethan Hawke is also very good. He looks as cute as ever!

Summary: It Aint Dickens, It Aint Sexy, It Aint Good
Review: This film prizes beauty -- and rather vapid, sexless beauty at that -- over narrative cohesion or strucutre. The kind of film a foreign audience might like, since it's light on dialogue on heavy on lush, overwrought, pretentious and simple-minded imagery, GREAT EXPECTATIONS fetishizes its skinny, pale movie stars like a fashion magazine. See this director's magical LITTLE PRINCESS, and shun this studio atrocity. One happy note though: ETHAN HAWKE has never looked better.
