Summary: Definitely a film for the big screen, but . . .
Review: the recent extended commentary found on the DVD release (Criterion Collection) by Roeg and Agutter is a useful addition.Viewers might consider reading Bruce Chatwin's "The Songlines," which was written at about the same time as the making of the film. Same sere landscape: one painted with film, the other painted with words. Two caveats: One. The film is inaptly titled. The story is *far* less about an Aborigine's walkabout than it is about the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of two Anglo youngsters in the Australian outback. Two. The film is ineptly prefaced with an explanation of "walkabout".

Summary: good, as long as you haven't read the novel
Review: well, this movie is filled with spectacular shots of the desert, and deals with themes that the novel didn't touch on (and does it well, like the contrast between the desert and the city), but, if you've read the novel the changes in the plot can almost be aggravating, because it was changed completely from what it originally was. If you want to see this for the landscape it'll blow you away, if you want to see it as a representation of the book it will be a disappointment.

Review: I really don't have anything to add to the other positive reviews including Amazon's review by Jeff Shannon. The emotional and intellectual impacts of this movie reverberate through my very being. The only adjectives I have are all superlative. This movie blows me away.

Summary: Roeg makes a mainstream art movie
Review: Nicolas Roeg's career has been a rocky one, and recently his work seems to have been ignored. 'Walkabout' was probably his masterpiece, since the extraordinary outback locations fit his artistic approach to film making perfectly. This film does not have the gravity of 'Don't Look Now' but it still manages to linger in the mind and conveys layers of powerful messages through its young cast and simple storyline. See it on the biggest screen you can find.

Summary: Non-anamorphic -- What an opportunity missed!
Review: This is a movie that will haunt you forever and Criterion has to be congratulated for re-releasing the film after years of unavailability. What a real shame, though, that the DVD lacks an anamorphic widescreen version that would have been stunning on increasingly-commonplace widescreen monitors. Aside from that, I have no complaints about video quality.

Summary: AGUTTER AND GULPILIL WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY
Review: This is the most incredible movie I have ever and will ever see in my life. In a world industrialized where people misuse nature's resources and say "there's no more land to live on", in a world where racism is still the same but now it's institutionalized, in a world of ignorance because we do not like the colour of another's skin, this movie is a refuge to all that and more. The "white" industrialized society clashes with the "aboriginal" society. This movie teaches us that we should be open-minded and free-spirited. There is not one dull moment and every time you see it you will be blown away again and again! I am mixed race being part-white, part-asian and part-black and it has changed my perspective totally and has given me pride in my "black side". Roeg has done well! If you want a synopsis read the other reviews, I just want Amazon customers to know that THIS IS THE MOVIE!

Summary: a really good movie that i saw by acident
Review: i have a c-band satelite dish (the old kind). i rarely watch it. most of the time i leave it tuned to g7 channel 14. this channel is IFC (independant film channel). i happened to be in the room and heard that a movie called WALKABOUT was about to begin and also a brief description of the nature of the movie. i completely dismissed it and went about my reading. i was about to mute the volume when i noticed the beautiful vintage volkswagon (the european version). i continued to watch, hoping to see the vw again. within five minutes i was hooked. i sat almost motionless thruout the film. although i did not realize it at the time, i felt as if i was there. i cannot write all the thoughts and emotions it evoked. jenny agutter played the young girl to perfection. the little boy was so convincing that i thought he must not have even been aware that he was "acting". watching the aborigine, i learned what a walkabout is and what it must mean to the person who experiences it and achieves the "rite of passage" it brings. the cinematography and attention to the smallest of details did not go unappreciated. the nudity (this was the unedited directors cut) was in no way separate from, and did not detract from the mesmerizing flow. i could write much much more about this film. some of it would bore you because each person will come away from this film with his own set of reflections. if you get a chance to see it, listen carefully to the poem excerpt at the very end immediately before the ending credits. if you understand it, it will make you cry.

Summary: The best movie ever made..
Review: Walkabout is the best movie ever made.. I am not going to give a summary of the film, because, everyone else on these reviews did so...if this is the first review your reading, read the others first, so you get the story, than read mine....cause, all im gonna do is talk about how amazing, this brillant film is. Walkabout gave me chills, about 12 times durning watching it. It was just this friday, it was about my 20th time of seeing the film, and it blew me away...again. Everytime i watch it, i realize, and understand more meataphores. Its amazing...the soundtrack, and sound effects are totally part of the story...like, when they get to the tree...and....the angels. its creepy. for the first time i found the movie eerie, and was haunted by many images i never noticed before.. i love walkabout. it is soooo good, my god! Its sooo good! *screams* EVERYONE MUST SEE WALKABOUT!!!!

Summary: Guess I'm simple
Review: I just didn't get it. Extremely disjointed (what was the point of the weather scientists?) Brief moments of brilliance, but all in all, almost as bad as 2001. Definitely a film made for those who find satisfaction in suffering and pretending to have a deeper understanding of life.
