Summary: And then Stanley Died
Review: I have never liked masks. The masks in this film are what they were meant to be a look at the self no one wants to see. There are moments in every Kubrick film that haunt you. They come back at some later date. In the movie the doctors wife is very angry with him so angry that she cheats on him and then laughs out loud at him in her sleep but cries when she tells him the dream in reality. She really hates him but that alone causes her so much conflict she can only be honest in her sleep. Seeking revenge for her fantasy dreams because it was not him she desired. Our Doctor finds himself comfortable in a room full of masked people having sex everywhere awake. This tells me what it is she might not like about him or herself. There are parts of this film that have been censored and changed and that insults me. Kubrick filmed it for a reason and changing it is like sticking a fig leaf on the most important part. We are animals and sex is not a puritanical act. This movie though long in doing it confronts that part of us behind the mask. Then Stanley died leaving us as always knowing he just said something we may not want to look at and would like explained so we can deny it or at least intellectualize it. Alas Kubrick knew the Id is not easy to understand. I know I will remember those masks for the purpose they serve in this film only a very creative mind could have created that effect. Sure its not alien or scream but its more horrifying because the animal lives within quietly suppressed to be civilized but then again is it?

Summary: Worst Movie of the Year
Review: Save your money, this movie is sick. I like Tom Cruise (or used to) but this is awful.

Summary: My eyes were certainly wide shut by the end of this movie...
Review: Now, granted, my review is going to be a little more harsh than usual, probably because I'm more of an action, plot type person. Seemed like this movie stumbled along veeeeeery slowly. By the end of the movie, I was scratching my head trying to figure out what the movie was about. It leaves you hanging in the end with many unanswered questions, not to mention feeling, what I call, "movie raped". Defniitely not worth my money or my time.

I could discern no plot to the movie. It's simply about a guy who is a little disappointed with his own marriage, and finds himself inevitably drawn to mystery, never really cheating on his wife, but not being totally honest with her either. In my mind, a major flop of a movie. I'm rather surprised it has received the ratings that it has. Probably because most of the people that wish to review it liked it, while the rest of the world hated it so much, they couldn't stand to even sit here online, and type their honest review, it wasn't worth their time. I offer my review, because I honestly feel it stunk. I left the theatre very disappointed, and attempting to disect the movie, and find out a plot. Certainly, there is some mystery in the movie as Cruise finds himself discovered in a secret society he entered uninvited. But nothing is ever really explained. A married man, furstrated with his own marriage, jumps into the middle of a secret society of people having sex with masks on, but doesn't really do anything wrong while there himself, and his wife ends up finding out, and that's about it. A little mystery in the works, but nothing ever explained. A complete bore, and waste of time.

Of course, again, I'm not into exploring the relationships and all that jazz. Basically they're all the same... Predictable... Guy/Girl have relationship, one of them cheats, they get caught. I'm looking for entertainment, which this had none of. A little mystery, granted the naken women were great eye candy, and one annoying piano note for a music score, but that's about all I have good to say about the movie. But don't let that confuse you as to the one piano note. Annoying as a migrane...

Summary: Kubrick's final film
Review: Although this movie confounded audiences and was dismissed by critics, given time "Eyes Wide Shut" will come to be recognized as belonging among director Stanley Kubrick's best work. EWS puts a microscope to the complex--and Freudian underscored--psychology of married sexuality. Hence the director's decision to cast Cruise and Kidman (a real-life married couple) as the movies leads.

The movie's logic and story are dream-like in their progression. Those looking for straight-ahead Hollywood storytelling will be frustrated and/or disappointed. This film has all the psychological complexities of Kubrick's best films (2001: A Space Odyssey," for example), while at the same time being the director's most intimate work.

The entire cast is excellent, as is the screenplay, and the direction is up to the standard that Kubrick has established with his earlier films.

Summary: The final piece from a genius
Review: To feel as though you are seeing through the eyes of Stanley Kubrick is an experience we can be so fortunate as to have. The goal is to be able to put yourself there. The characters portrayed in Eyes Wide Shut have brilliantly put themselves directly into the characters they represent. I can see Kubrick explaining to the casting director the explicit details of a Nick Nightingale background. The lounge player with a family, a great guy but not quite upper class. He has some trouble with the family thing so he doesn't mind being away. This is where the casting directors make their money. Throughout the movie we are gripped with the reality of the situation taking place. The aristcratic elegance of NYC, along with the common streets. The color in many of the backgrounds produces a beautiful and lasting image, and the musical score may be unforgetable. As the viewer takes on the thoughts of its reality, the principle characters baffle with dreams and reality in a touching manner. What may be the finest underlying tone in the movie involves Kubrick's attempt to show his enlightened path towards the power of energy forming a connection. In an interesting change of events the reality of Dr.Hartford entered Mrs.Hartford in the form of a dream at the same time. She also saves his life in an unusual manner. These are the finer qualities of a genius. 2001, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick has entered the minds of each character ensuring us the authenticity of each and every film. We seldom get to see perfection attained by so so many actors in one film. To see the involvement is to see the genius.

Summary: Profound, but misguided statement on fiedelity
Review: Kubrick's last film is a master work that is as both visually stunning as it is misguided in it's view of the human condition. As a Freudian, I see that man is driven by sexual energy and that monogamy in marriage is not a reality. Kubrick's main character, portrayed by Tom Cruise, is sent on a sort of sexual odyssey, into the dark world of AIDS, prostitution, and satanic orgies. The conclusion by Kubrick is that it is dangerous to stray, and that a long term relationship with one person in marriage is best. But Kubrick ignores the strength of the Id, to drive a man out into the night in search of conquests. Each new conquest adds to a man's ego, building it up and allowing him to reach that point where the existential crisis of aging and death fade into repressed memory. I found the movie an interesting statement, but cannot see how it relates to the human condition and the ultimate myth of monogamy.

Summary: what a turd.
Review: I had the great misfortune of going to see this "film" with people who didn't want to leave early. if i'd gone alone, i would have been out of there almost immediately. This movie was horrible. Firstly, it was WAY too long, and the horrendous music only intensified the pain of this very slow movie. It was agonizing. I have never heard complete silence in a theatre. All you could hear was people shifting in their seats as they suffered. The acting was awful. The story was stupid. The "secret society" was ridiculous. I would only recommend this film as torture. And not the good kind. Do yourself a favor, and don't bother!

Summary: Pretentious and repleat with outdated
Review: Stanley Kubrik is old. Or he would be old if he weren't dead. This movie would probably have been a very probing look at sexuality, inhibition, jealousy, conspiracy and corruption... if it were made 20 years ago. Today, you have to look at the characters and events and just say "Give me a break." This film is more pretentious than dull, and it is dull in a paramount way. Although this film is primarily struggling to shock you and challenge you on subjects that have been addressed in a hundred better ways, it is technically beautiful, and the characters seem exceptionally sincere. It is a beautiful movie in exactly the same way that "Lost in Space" was beautiful. Technically well down, but painfully amiss on dialog and filmographically redundant, ill-conceived thematic elements. Watch "The Wall". Watch "9 1/2 weeks". Watch something better.

Summary: how can i rate crap?
Review: Okay I know that some people like movies this lame but to me this movie just out right sucked! I am not a fan of Kubrick's the only reason I saw this was because my brother said the movie was good, and come on! I was generally apalled at the poor excuse to make an edited porn for people too watch that wasn't rated NC17 or XXX...it was just stupid, and very sad. I mean this movie had no real plot. It is about a Doctor who gets involded with hookers and cheating on his wife, (not like it doesn't happen everyday) evntually finding out about gatherings that this group of maniacal party goers, who have big orgies. This is the basic plot, the music is diturbing only because it's got a shallow repetition, and the acting was terrible. Now the direction i don't even want to go there, come on Kubrick...I mean geez...

Anyway, the basic sum of this evil is that it sucks, you shouldn't waste your money watching a damn three hour movie of crap!

Summary: One of the worst movies I have ever seen
Review: I consider myself a movie aficionado who appreciates many genres of movies. However, I found nothing redeeming or interesting about Eyes Wide Shut. This movie was plainly and absolutely aweful.
