Summary: A Movie For the Dull Witted
Review: Vanilla Sky was created with a very dull and slow witted audience in mind. Everything from the script, the acting, and the direction seem to indicate that the movie will only appeal to a very "special" person.The story is a whirlwind of complicated relationships and mysterious developments. Story structures remain purposefully hidden from the audience in order to establish an intriguing mystery that invites the viewer to decipher the true reality of the episodes as the plot unfolds. Piece by piece the cardboard jaggies are slowly laid into place, often confusing the prescience the viewer might have developed; often contradicting earlier plot twists. One might have the creeping suspicion that the film might be a let down well before the final curtain is drawn. The obligatory Tom Cruise shirtless scene is worked into the movie on more than one occasion. We also get the canned Cruise expressions that are included with every drive-thru Hollywood Cruise happy meal: Cruise flirting with coworkers and smiling, Cruise flirting with neighbors and smiling, Cruise flirting with friends and smiling - the entire female cast in the film almost feints every time Tom turns on the charm. For no woman can resist his "boyishly good lucks" can they? In the Hollywood Cruise happy meal all women are treated this superficially and this movie is no exception. And the developing plot mystery? Ah, nevermind. The movie pulls the wool back from our eyes and reveals that everything you have just seen was not really happening. Imagine a Hitckcockian thriller where the final scene doesn't reveal the carefully constructed plot at all but instead features the main character suddenly awakening from a dream, shaking his head, and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Whew, that was one weird dream", he might explain. And that is how the movie leaves the viewer. Unlike the cleverness of MuHolland Drive, this film thinks that being weird equates cleverness. And it doesn't. This film is cumbersome and clumsy and offers little to an intelligent movie fan. The story is a wild untamed bull that is violently dragging its writer that has one leg hung in the storyline stirrup. In all my experience, I have never encountered a more insulting ending to a movie. It is as if the cameras were panned back and all the production studio is revealed; there is no clever mystery to solve, there is no carefully woven plot, there is no story. It was all fake and the writer of this script did not have the energy or talent to pull it off; and instead of trying to deceive the viewers anymore, he simply throws his hands in the air, admits defeat, and scribbles out the conclusion so he may try again with a clean slate. This movie might, however, appeal to a slower more easily deceived viewer. I could imagine a certain type of movie goer stumbling out of the theater with a dull thick look in their eyes as they slowly recite in a thick low voice, "That movie was weird!" This movie goer will triumphantly clap because he can finally feel engaged and feel like an active participant in a "deep" storyline. It may be kinder to simply ruffle the hair of this type of viewer and let them enjoy their moment.

Review: I have seen many movies in my time. Vanilla Sky blew all of those movies away! i have never seen a movie more well done. i have never seen a movie better than it. I can not even begin to fatham how great it was. i recomend this movie. Its a must see!!!![....]

Summary: Best Movie of 2001
Review: I have seen many reviews that describe this film as confusing. To a point, it is confusing. It leaves you a little uncertain as to what is occurring or how it could occur. In one scene David Aames (Tom Cruise's character) says to an apparent stranger that he wishes everyone in the bar would just shut up - and then they do. You have to wonder, what's going on? The beauty of the movie is that it gives you an answer and then it all makes sense. If you watch it a second time (and many people will want to) you can see some clues you missed. I suppose that many people that dislike this film just do not care for the uncertainty it creates, that is the reason I liked it. It wasn't in any way ordinary. There is one question I can answer for people who see the film and wonder why the "Lucid Dream" began when it did. Of course, it began when David Aames choose it to begin but why at that point. Because, it was the lowest point in his life - he wanted to take his life from that point and make it happy from there. That does make sense if you think about it - but if you don't like to think about movies when they're over. You should definately watch something else - I believe the "Fast and the Furious" is available for you. Another point about this movie is that it touches on the effect of pop culture in our lives. The movies we see, the music we hear, etc. It all has an effect on us as we go through life - I don't believe any movie has ever brought that point to light in quite the surprising way this one does. Last point is the music, there is a lot of great music in this film - old and new. And it's used to great effect - the song "Can We Still be Friends" is powerful, and the "Elevator Beat" is both sentimental and haunting.

Summary: Pass the coffee to stay awake through this Vanilla Nightmare
Review: What a total boring experience. It only took Cameron Crowe 2 1/2 hours to finally make the point to Appreciate What You Have and Take Nothing For Granted. I almost feel sorry for Tom Cruise (or was I feeling sorry for myself dozing off waiting for the punchline?) to watch him bumble his way through this Slug disguised as a movie. Tom, be a little pickier in the future when you're reading scripts, you've earned it.

Review: I thought this movie could have used some editing, but overall, the movie made you think. If you like FIGHT CLUB, you'll love this movie! Both Cruz and Cruise do a good job in this movie. Story has twists and turns so it keeps you guessing.

Review: One of the worst movies I have ever seen. It seems like the writer couldn't come up with a good explanation for the plot he created, so he decided to go with the most far-fetched and unrealistic ending. Please don't compare this film to "The Sixth Sense". It's NOWHERE near as good.

Review: I don't care what people say. Cameron Crowe's stunning VANILLA SKY is one of the best films of the year! Crowe is a truly brilliant filmmaker, taking the audience on a real ride. He fills an already interesting story with fantastic visuals and a great cast! There are no weak links in this movie; Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell, and Jason Lee are all incredible in their respective roles! Don't listen to the negative reviews. VANILLA SKY is an eerie, operatic, and entertaining science-fiction thriller!

Summary: Vanilla Sky... It's so good, it's almost a lucid dream
Review: What more can I say to describe Cameron Crowes 2001 picture "Vanilla Sky". It is truly the best movie I have seen this year, and possibly the best love story ever made to date.
Cameron Crowe, who also directed last years "Almost Famous", which I also loved, directes Vanilla Sky into a climatic shower of the unknown every minute, while the plot unfolds into a mind bubbling unexpected twist of suspense, love, hate, dreams, sex and jealousy.
Tom Cruise is at his best here, and gives every emotion forward to make us inhale the wonderful sensual feelings that his character feels and goes through. Cruz and Diaz are a delight, and Kurt Russell, who rarely does a film today is wonderful as the part of McCabe the lawyer.
A lot of critism has been made over Vanilla Sky, mostly because people just don't get it. It's hard to explain how you feel after the viewing Vanilla Sky for the first time. You alsot feel confused, but enjoyed and entertained at the same time, wanting you to go back for more to see it again. Upon your second viewing of Vanilla Sky, your questions will be answered and you will see the real beauty and love story that Vanilla Sky portrays.
Vanilla Sky is a pure treat and refreshment from the human heart. Great performances, directing and screenplay... Vanilla Sky is a gift that everyone should open and see. 2 hours and 12 minutes
