Rating: Summary: Too much Tom Review: Didn't really turn me on. I haven't seen the original Spanish version, Abre Los Ojos, to make a fair comparison, but I understand that that version was a lot better. I'm going to say that I thought the ending was a cop out. I suppose this was meant to be a sci-fi film in the first place, but nothing in this movie left clues along the way to lead me to believe this was something other than a love story gone wrong. So when the ending crops up, I think, "What? What happened?" Probably too much Tom. He seems to have to inhabit every scene that exists in his movies. The curious question is what does Penelope Cruz thinks of the American versio of the movie she originally mad ein her native tongue?
Rating: Summary: Scientological Propaganda Review: This is pure scientological propaganda. Avoid this film like the plague. Dont get me wrong, the concept of the film is excellent, the directing is reasonable, but the purpose of this film is lost in the propaganda.
Rating: Summary: Morons irritate me Review: I just finished watching this movie, and I will admit that I don't fully understand it. BUT...I'm not going to be a moron and say I hate it. If you don't understand it, watch it again! The more critical (and in my opinion smart) human mind is going to want to learn something instead of lazily criticizing it. Spark your imagination and truly try to understand this movie. Give your brain a little exercise. I'm only 15, and I have every intention of watching this movie until I understand it all, and I don't know about you, but that sounds a bit more mature than the "adults" here that won't give this movie credit for its clear ability to provoke thought. I fully recommend this movie.
Rating: Summary: Great movie that makes you think and use your imgination! Review: Whomever Daria M. is who rated this so low and those who "don't get it", obviously you don't! This movie allows you to let your mind go in a few different directions, especially as to what you think might have happened at the end. I agree with the reviewer who said "all movies don't have to be a paint-by-number" creation. It is beautiful and moving, and it is also a classic case for Tom Cruise's character of "what goes around, comes around." Movies don't have to be completely based upon reality to be interesting and make you think! I think it was very artfully done, and the scenery and art direction was gorgeous. One of my favorite flicks.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I would first like to say that I am not 13 y/o. I am 19 and I did not wish to fill out a sign up sheet and give out my email. On to the review. This movie was not recommended to me by my parents or friends so I didn't watch the movie fully and closely until last Semester, the fall of 2003. Upon watching it with my roommate Vic, a huge enthusiast of the movie, I instantly became a huge fan. The reasons for becoming a huge fan arent just that the movie is amazing but also that I can relate to the movie on some very personal levels. Any guy that has ever had a "F*** BUDDY" and then met a girl that he liked and had the buddy stalk him can totally relate to this movie. To be completely honest, the movie has changed my life for the better with a quote. The quote is, "Every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around." Penelop Cruz is beautiful in so many ways and her beauty is only increased by the role she plays in this movie. If i could give this movie a 1-5 rating, I would definitely give it a 6. One last thing, if any girl says to me, "What is happiness to you?" I will run away screaming.
Rating: Summary: Wow. Review: It is shocking how ridiculously stupid some people are. If you are a simple minded cow and you don't "get it" then obviously you aren't going to like the film. If you want to whinge about the fact that you didn't like the ending, just get over it. Why is it such a big deal that the ending wasn't what you expected? Not EVERY SINGLE MOVIE has to be a paint by number detective hobby kit for you to figure out. It isn't a race to see if you can guess what's going on before the film ends. If you want something like that, watch a Michael Bay movie. That would be more suited to your intellect. And for the complete tool that asked what the title means, read an art history book, muppet.
Rating: Summary: Vanilla Sky Review: Here's a movie that proudly opens up with Radiohead a blastin', and Tom Cruise running around a vacant Times Square screaming and generally wondering where everyone went. Despite the bad press Vanilla Sky got, probably heavily based on the fact that it's not a totally original script, I liked parts of it, generally liked the idea as a whole, but it has lackluster scenes in between and pointless little symbolic montages. I mean, the whole movie is symbolic for dreams, and if you don't realize that right off the bat, you will probably think this is the worst movie ever. Also, the whole thing is watered down, and could have easily taken up just an hour of thought. The basic idea of it is that Tom Cruise, the playboy, discoveres that his world is turning like a dream, or maybe his dream is becoming scarily realistic. You never know, however, and don't even know at the end. And you aren't supposed to know, you're supposed to come up with your own theories about the story, which makes this story notorious for senselessness. So as pretentious as it is, and likeable to a select few, who can doubt that the end sequence was put in there to please people who need a happy ending? Honestly, it could have been done a lot better. The DVD, however good it looks, with all it's "features", really is just as dreamy as the movie, with all its commentaries and featurettes. Then the lowpoint, the music video Afrika Shox by Leftfield, isn't even the music video that Chris Cunningham originally did! It's one of those soundtrack music videos with only little parts from the movie and segments from the music video, and the bad parts of the music video.
Rating: Summary: Scratch below the surface Review: The first time I saw this movie, I couldn't help but thinking how weird it was. Then, as time went by, I found it coming back to me in a song, in an image, in something I overheard. I decided to give it a second chance and rented it. What I found upon my second viewing was fascinating. The exploration of human obsession with superficial beauty and instant gratification was phenomenal. David Aames lives for the moment; he is a young, wealthy, good-looking man who sleeps with gorgeous women, drives fancy cars, wears nice clothes and, best of all, doesn't really have to work! His world is turned upside down when he catches a glimpse of what could be true love. When all that he takes for granted in life is taken away and he must face all the personal insecurities he has never even thought of, we are forced to look at ourselves in an uncomfortable way. It's hard enough for me, who in no way comes close to Tom Cruise, to entertain the possibility of a physical disfigurement. The journey that his character takes is at once painful, uplifting, and one of the greatest achievements of subtle introspection delivered through the medium of film that I've witnessed in a long time. The commentary with Cameron Crowe and his wife, complete with a little cameo by Cruise, is very insightful. The other extras are fun to watch if you like the movie. This is filmmaking at its best. Do not miss this movie!
Rating: Summary: Don't knock what you do not understand Review: A complex movie will seem stupid to a simple mind. A viewer from NORMAL, Il. compared this movie to "Abre Los Ojos", which most NORMAL people have never heard of. The title "Vanilla Sky" refers to a painting in David's 'daytime office' apartment by Monet also titled "Vanilla Sky". David uses this painting as his dream world when he is frozen. You can see it in the scene after the night club where he sleeps on the sidewalk. The next day the sky looks as it did in the painting. I thought the movie was excellent because it made you THINK, and you couldn't figure it out until the very end. THINK is the key word. Thumbs Up, I recommend it, and I will soon add it to my DVD collection.
Rating: Summary: Vanilla Ripoff Review: I never thought it possible, but I guess it is. Two different directors, with different actors in a different locale and THE SAME STORY. One gets it right, in this case the original and the other, well, makes a mess of it. I literally burst out laughing when Cruise did his little jump in the air to demonstrate his frustration with his team of surgeons. Cruise didn't want to play it like Edwardo Noriega so he took it to the other extreme - infantile. There was alot of that in this movie. The way in which Sophia reacts when she thinks she's in love with Cruise's character. Squeeling like a child. And to top it all off, Tom Cruise couldn't dare to hide his face under grotesque makeup (as did Edwardo Noriega in the far superior and more mature "Abre Los Ojos") because afterall, how else would people recognize the great Tom Cruise. And if someone can explain the title, be my guest. Two thumbs way down.
