Summary: I loved it!
Review: Casting the superfine Morris Chestnut in a leading role guaranteed that many women would see this film, but Terrence Howard nearly steals the movie with his hilarious observations. On the whole, I felt that this was a strong movie about old friends growing up. And while it is true that the female characters are a trifle underdeveloped, this movie was primarily about the 4 male friends. We seem them reminisce, bond, fight and ultimately make peace with each other. The women are only presented as accessories. But what is wrong with the men getting a flick of their own? They sure complained enough after "Waiting to Exhale" was made.

The Best Man is about old friends, love and secrets, and it is a romantic comedy -- not a drama. There are plenty of chauvanistic bible thumpers whose actions are in direct conflict with the bible they claim to revere. I thought Morris was hilarous especially when he proclaimed Jordan to be "too damned sassy and independent." The men are all prototypes. Lance is the jock, Harper is the writer, Murch is the boho and Quinten is the player. In real life people can't be neatly categorized like that.

My only grievance is with the film's ending. I don't think that that Harper should have proposed at the wedding, and I definitely don't think that his girlfriend should have accepted. They just got caught up in the moment. Still, I thought that this movie was fabulous and I will watch it again and again.

Summary: The Best Yet
Review: Frist of all I'am a romantic at heart, I loved this movie, seen it twice, and could'nt wait for it to come on dvd or vhs which ever came frist. All I can say is that I made my husband go and he detest movies, but he enjoyed this one. Taye Diggs and Nia Long were great, she's one of my favorite actresses. It was spicy, funny, and very romantic! Every now and then I pull it out and watch it, I'll never get tired of looking at it. If I could, on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be rated 10

Summary: flawed but rewarding film
Review: `The Best Man' is a flawed but generally rewarding romantic drama, featuring a first-rate cast of likeable, talented actors. The film tells the tale of a handsome up-and-coming writer whose first novel has just been published on the eve of his best friend's wedding. The problem is that much of the material in the book has been drawn from autobiographical sources - and now, as old friends gather for the ceremony, the author and best man, Harper Stewart, has to face the fallout from some of the less than flattering portrayals contained therein. In addition, the novel contains the revelations of a few hitherto well-guarded secrets, some of which bear directly on the principals involved in the wedding itself.

Ironically, the primary strength of the film also emerges as its overarching weakness. The movie provides so richly textured a depiction of the interrelationships between and among the wide assortment of characters that it alternately straddles the line between fascination and tedium. On the positive side, writer/director Malcolm D. Lee is not afraid to give the characters their due, to allow them to reveal their many-layered personalities in scenes that play out in real-time tempo and rhythm. One appreciates the fact that we are not being rushed along from one highly dramatic moment to another without time to really get to know the characters as people. The counter effect of this, however, is that the film often seems too talky, self-indulgent and dramatically flat, a fact not helped by the excessive 122-minute running time. In addition, the whole novel-publishing aspect of the story seems both unnecessary and contrived, not to mention lacking in credibility since it becomes a bit difficult to believe that, if he were so terrified about his friends discovering his true perceptions of them, Harper would have written the novel in the first place. Moreover, when we hear voice-over recitations of a few sections of the novel itself, we are struck dumb that so badly written and trite a work could be so critically lauded and commercially successful.

However, the film's virtues do, ultimately, outweigh its imperfections. The actors and actresses turn in uniformly fine performances and the film deals intelligently and sensitively with the age-old issues of the fear of commitment and the two-faced attitude many men have when it comes to female infidelity. Lee, within the context of his characters, confronts these issues with subtlety rather than heavyhandedness and the last half hour or so of the film turns into a very moving celebration of the qualities of acceptance, commitment and sacrifice necessary to make a relationship truly work. `The Best Man' may require a little patience at times to get through, but the reward for those willing to give it a try makes it worth the effort.

Summary: Thats what friends are for !
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Obviously it helps that the absolutely gorgeous Morris Chestnut played a leading part (yes please ! ). It does not keep you gripped to your seat like a murder mystery. What the film highlighted was that friendships have highs as well as lows (like a marriage really). I particularly like the bonds that the men had in spite of the fact that each of them had completely different personalities. Harper urging Lance to pray in the church was moving. What Harper touched on was how deep their friendship went and the fact that he (Harper) had not forgotten this in spite of the situation he found himself in. It wasn't a deep and meaningful film but that's what made it so enjoyable. It just shows that African American films can be entertaining without being deep and and touching on major issues of the day. It is so completely refreshing to see something uplifting and romantic rather than the usual gangsta/action packed films. When Lance cried whilst saying his vows, I cried too. The bride looked beautiful, the groom............what can I Say?........The bridal party seated at the main table....Harper's speech.... MAGICAL ! The get together at the end was by the far the best, I wanted to jump out of my seat and join in the boogie ! If you've given up on relationships, marriage or a friendship then please watch this film. Let's see more more more black films of this nature - family life, strong relationships, marriage. Let's start being more positive and loving towards each other rather than being continually caught up in these battle of the sexes. Well done ! Look forward to seeing a follow up shortly. Let's see Jordan fall in love and get married.

Summary: The Best Man is The Best I've Seen In Months!
Review: Finally, a movie that shows African American's in a different light! This movie was excellent. The acting was superb! I was so happy to see Young Black People portrayed in this movie as educated, intelligent, and doing something with their lives. The story line was great and everyone can indentify with at least one of the personalities in this movie. The movie gave you so many options on where the story would end. Half way through the movie I was sure I knew what was going to happen and so was everyone else in the movie theater. Or so we thought...we were all dead wrong! Let's not even talk about the soundtrack..every song in this movie helps you see how the characters really feel. This movie is definitely recommmended
