Rating: Summary: Good. Not great. Good Review: I dont think this is as brilliant as others say. Its merely good. The first 45 minutes or so were mostly a bore. Not much happened. They should have had only a 20 minute intro and gone to nam. The parts that took place in nam were great. then its back to america which is not soo good. Its a good movie that is mostly entertaining but falls short of greatness. Nice performacnes by Dinero and Walken as usual but not much else. The film slagged at too many points but taken as a whole is a good film, but not a great one.
Rating: Summary: god bless america, screw everyone else... Review: my main complaint with the otherwise powerful film is this... the director obviously wants us to feel sorry for these young white "all american" good ol' boys, but we don't feel (and aren't supposed to feel) sorry for the vietnamese and other people scarred from this atrocious war. this film basically states that all vietnamese people are the same. no one would ever say that the white men in this film are all the same. they all have personalities, companions, jobs, hobbies, etc. while the vietnamese people in this movie are all sadistic money obsessed inhumans. this makes for a good movie? this film is extremely powerful though. i mean, you can imagine what it must be like to be one click away from eternal nothingness. it is so powerful in my opinion. the war wasn't even necessary in this film though! they could have all played russian roulette all day without the war! it seemed like the director just wanted an excuse to show a little hatred for the vietnamese. also, why are we supposed to feel sorry for these people? i mean, they are all drunken white trash who go hunting all the time! how noble is that? i didn't feel too sorry for robert de niro's character at all. the singing of "god bless america" at the end was typical. there was no one in the film against the war, and no one was upset at their country that was responsible for all these deaths.
Rating: Summary: What's the point to this movie? Review: I'll give you one thing: this movie is not as bad as Apocalypse now, although it is still HORRIBLE for its inaccurate portrayal of the Vietnamese. I know that the filmmakers are biased towards Americans because they are AMERICAN themselves. (Takes no rocket scientist to figure that out). So they would portray Americans as honest, brave boys going to fight for "their country" and the Vietnamese as ugly, deceiving, cruel wretched people. I think the scenario fits better the other way around. If you think that Americans played "fairly" in the game of war, think again. They're just as cruel as the next. I mean, we even have people admitting they massacred innocent, unarmed people nowadays. Do you expect me to praise you because you're a soldier? My loathe for war is too obvious, and the fact that humans cannot get along disturbs me, because one side is always thinking they're "superior" than the other and wants power. Americans should not even have gotten involved in this dirty, unnecessary war. Mind your own business, then at least you can have disregard for human life without actually proving that by MURDERING innocent people.
Rating: Summary: flamethrowers and madmen Review: you can't compare this movie to any other movie about vietnam. it does stand alone, to be sure. funny thing, though, in the video hound guide to war movies they gave the Deer Hunter only two and a half bones, saying the movie was racist, depicting the vietnamese as beasts and savages. Meanwhile, they give Siege of Fire Base Gloria 4 out of 4 bones. That movie was terrible. Anyway, i just don't get how people can say that the vietnamese are a gentle people who are only victims. That is the other side of a coin, and that's it. yeah, i'm sure there are some decent vietnamese people. yeah, they've been fighting with china and themselves and the french and us and whoever else for the last 1000 years. Claiming superlatives only belittles them, whether you call them the worst or the best. by the way,The Deer Hunter also showed slews of dispossessed vietnamese peasants walking the roads. Ask Philip Caputo what he thinks about the vietnamese, and he'll give you a complex response. And that's what The Deer Hunter is: a complex response to possibly the most complex situation this country has been involved in since our own Civil War.
Rating: Summary: Like fine wine, better with age. Review: If you haven't seen this movie in years watch it again. This movie captures a time, place, and people, that's fast being lost. Life long friends joined by their small town environment. A place where the wedding singer was the town butcher. People worked hard, played hard, cared about each other. People who blindly sent their sons and daughters to be ground up for what ? In the end these Americans still can come together as one, take comfort in their "home sweet home". An epic. This kind of movie will not be made for long time again. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Overrated and boring Review: I love good war movies, but this isn't one of them. I have never understood the appeal of this film. The opening wedding scene seems to go on forever, and does very little in the way of it's intended character development. There are a few good scenes, but hardly enough to make watching this movie a worthwhile experience. If you are interested in watching an excellent Vietnam war film, check out Full Metal Jacket, Bat 21, or Apocalypse Now.
Rating: Summary: Powerful, sad, poignant look at the Vietnam War. Review: I can only watch this movie about once a year. It's not one of those "Hey, let's get a pizza and watch The Deer Hunter," kind of movies. This one takes a look at the effects the Vietnam War has on a small group of friends and what the war does to their lives and relationships. Walken and De Niro are so good in this movie - I would love to see them act together again one day. If you haven't seen this one, please at least rent it because it is simply a classic in movie-making.
Rating: Summary: Another WAY overrated 1970's flick... Review: what was it about movies made in that decade? Was everybody so high that they thought anything controversial made for "great art"? This movie was mind numbingly boring for the first hour, and felt like a bunch of pieced together demo reel's for the second two hours. I had heard many people compare this to "Apocalypse Now" (one of the greatest movies ever made), this movie was not even close. The cinematography and audio (including the musical score) was some of the worst I have seen/heard in a while. The ONLY good thing about this movie was it's grat cast of actors. At the end of the flick I had only one comment "well that's another 3 hours of my life that I'll never get back".
Rating: Summary: Not as great as the hype Review: While there are a number of things in this movie that should have interested me, I could not get engrossed in this movie. At first glance, it was very interesting, but it never took on the potential it could have had. First, we have an incredibly long and drawn out buddy scene in the bar where there is no real dialogue except mumbling and singing to the radio. Then there is an elaborate and long wedding scene at the Orthodox Church. Then, there is a long boring drive up to the woods to hunt and an argument over nothing that never goes anywhere. Finally, for about half an hour there are exciting fighting scenes in Vietnam, complete with Russian roulette, escape, kidnapping, and lots more. But then the movie descends again into this mud of boring PA life. The movie seems to pick up again, but only to end on a boring note on which I wondered why I bothered renting this movie. I could not get emotionally involved in this movie. And one lingering thing bothered me. DeNiro's character was sleeping with Walken's girlfriend...and that was never a problem. If this movie is all about friendship and what war does to friends, there should have been some discussion about this, maybe a little conflict in the relationship. This movie just didn't grab me like it's been talked up to.
Rating: Summary: Don't Buy This DVD Review: This is one of the best films ever made, but don't purchase the DVD.. They are working on a special edition, due out next year.. This DVD is poor at best, and the key actors were too busy with current projects to record a commentary, the special ed. will have all of this. Buy this DVD if you're in a hurry to own it, but for the patient people, wait a year and you will be happy!
