Rating: Summary: "I'll Give You Something You've Been Obsessing About..." Review: 'Cruel Intentions' is a trashy movie about nasty people manipulating others just because they can. This is simply a guilty pleasure movie that most will enjoy for its nastiness. Gellar plays Kathryn, who bets playboy step-brother Sebastian (Phillippe) that he can't deflower a sophisticated, self-confessed virgin. If he doesn't, she gets his car, if he does, he gets Kathryn, in bed. But then, horror of horrors, Sebastian actually starts to fall for his "victim" (Witherspoon).
Sarah Michelle Gellar is delightfully nasty as Kathryn, and Ryan Phillippe gets his smarmy rich-boy-trash character right. There is nothing new or highly sophisticated about this movie. It's not one of the greatest, but it is watchable and enjoyable on a guilty-pleasure level.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies on the earth!!! Review: I would just like to say that this is one of my favorite movies of all time!!! Ryan Phillpe is so sexy, and Sarah Michelle Geller is great as Kathryn, who's a life-ruining b*tch. Reese Witherspoon, who is a really good actress, plays Annette, the good girl, and she does a GREAT job at it. My friends and I all love this movie and watch it a lot. Of course, my sister had to bring it to school last year and she lost it, so I'm asking for a new one for Christmas. Anyway, it's an awesome movie. Please please PLEASE buy it or at least rent it.
Rating: Summary: Disgusting and offensive Review: I found this movie to be appauling. There is a scene where Ryan Phillippe's character get's Selma Blair's character drunk and then sexually assaults her. She has the good sense the next day to know that something bad happened, but Sarah Michelle Gellar's character convinces her that, hey, it was a good thing because she orgasmed and suddenly she's part of a secret society. I'm sorry, but people are sexually assaulted every single day and it is never appropriate to show anything where someone might misconstrue what happened. I don't care whether these people get their cumuppence at the end or not, they raped her and what they did was wrong and the filmmakers made it look glamourous. I know that some people reading my review will think me a right-wing idiot who doesn't know that this was supposed to be interpreted badly for the two stepsiblings, but I don't have enough confidence in the intellegence of the populaiton of the United States of America to have the same interpretation. Both of those characters should have been put into jail for what they did. Being sexually assaulted is one of the most humiliating experiences someone can ever go through. It should have been shown that way because that's what it was. If you don't realize that when you watch this scene, then I'm not the one with the issues.
Rating: Summary: Best Movie Review: This is my favourtite movie of all time. Cruel Intentions is a movie about seduction and betrayal. We have Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Mertueil, step brother and sister who are bored rich kids living in the city, they also specialise int he above mentioned qualities. Sebastian is a bit of a lady's man and is getting bored of seducing and sleeping with the same kinda girls. He wants a challenge. So Kathryn bets him he cannot seduce the new headmasters daughter (Anette Hargrove, Resse Witherspoon) at school, who also happens to be a virgin and is firm on her stance to wait for love before losing it. The rules of the bet are if Kathryn wins she gets Sebastians hot car, if Sebastian wins he gets to sleep with Kathryn, when Sebastian asks "why would i go for that bet?" Kathryn sums it up by saying "Because im the only person you cant have and it kills you". So with the rules in place and the clock ticking Sebastian sets off on his mission. The only obstacle is falling in love. This movie is exetremely entertaining, the music, setting and acting is all excellent, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe excel as the seductive siblings and Resse Witherspoon is also great as the innocent Anette. The soundtrack to the film is also stunning, the music is mellow and complements the film perfectly. Overall a real classic.
Rating: Summary: Good, but so are the other two. Review: I will praise this movie. It is really a very intelligent and somewhat dark movie. The actors were great, and I loved the teen spin on the book. I do think that the other two movies done on this same book ("Dangerous Liasons", and "Valmont") were more accurate, but all in all this was a great movie. I think that Sarah Michelle Gellar was great for the part. She was almost as good as Glenn Close and Annette Bening. I also really loved the soundtrack. There is some great music on there. You should check it out. Great movie and Ryan Phillipe is absolutely gorgeous!
Rating: Summary: True Laclos Review: Far more faithful to the spirit, characters and sense of the Liaisons dangereuses than either of the two ridiculous costume dramas which get the novel all wrong. I never use films in my French literature classes. But I use this one.
Rating: Summary: Cruel Intentions Review: love Cruel Intentions. It is a sleek, smart, and all around trashy at times. The cast is full of beautiful people even though the acting is just above average for most of the cast. The plot is great and is very wise for it's era.The shots of the city are great along with all the settings. The characters are all thought out well. When it's over you keep wishing for more. The score is basically just one or two pieces repeated over and over.I did like the soundtrack a little and absolutely loved the slutty Sarah Michelle Gellar, the quiet Reese Witherspoon, and the bubbly Selma Blair. The cast was amazing but they could have practiced one more time before they hit the spot light. It really has a celebrity for pretty much everyone; okay not everyone but alot of people. The dialogue is sleek but is annoying at times after you heard it over and over.At the end of the movie your kind of glad these aren't real teenagers and just actors in a movie.I haven't read the book but I think it's probably a good adaption. If you are up for an attractive and intelligent film then go out and rent Cruel Intentions now.Trust me you won't be dissapointed.
Director Roger Kumble transfers the DANGEROUS LIASONS tale to Manhattan, where wealthy prep school student Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) bets her stepbrother Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe) that he can't deflower the virginal Annette (Reese Witherspoon) before the school year begins. If he fails to accomplish this task, Kathryn gets his Jaguar Roadster; if he succeeds, he gets an evening of pleasure with Kathryn.
"Entertaining. Engaging. A calculated guilty pleasure."
