Summary: An ugly, repulsive, and good movie
Review: This movie isn't nice, positive, hopeful or snuggle-inspiring. It isn't gay-friendly, or anything else friendly. And it isn't happy at all.

So why watch it?

Some might watch it for the sex and nudity, which appear in abundance. Some might watch it because they read about it in so many gay magazines, but this isn't really a "gay movie."

Some might watch it for the honest, brutal portrayals of internalized homophobia and the dangers of bullying. We let too much happen to our teens: too much bullying, too much misinformation, and too much lack of guidance.

This is a true story of what happened when a gang of drugged-out and hopeless teens got tired of the bullying they experienced from a homophobic friend. It's obvious that he's actually gay and just doesn't know how to deal with it, but instead of trying to help him, or trying to force him to get help before he hurts anyone else, they decide to kill him.

It's an ugly, repulsive film, and all the better for that. Hatred and violence aren't pretty. Neither is ignoring those problems in our culture and the lives of America's children. Bully is a brilliant wake-up call, much like the equally controversial Kids. Larry Clark directed both films and deserves more attention for such important work.

Summary: gratuitous
Review: This intermitably slow moving film has no redeeming qualities. Between the horrid shooting style (spin the camara around a group of kids more than 10 times at a high rate of speed) and the gratuitus crotch shots, nude scenes and pointless sex, this movie was just a mis-filed porn flick.

There was no point to this film, it could have been a disturbing look into teen angst, the problems of rampant bullying, or drug use. Instead he just lays out the story of stupid kids doing stupid things for stupid reasons in a stupid film. A little more character development would have been nice. In the special features we learn that many of the kids have really painful pasts. The film would have done well to reduce the number of pointless sex scenes and focused on these kid's motivation and pain.

Summary: A WAKE UP CALL!!
Review: LARRY CLARK'S FILM DOES NOT PROMOTE DRUGS, TEENAGE SEX, AND VIOLENCE. IT IS A WAKE UP CALL TO YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEIR PARENTS. THE CHARACTERS IN THIS MOVIE ARE REAL. PARENTS NEED TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THESE KINDS OF KIDS, AND THEN LOOK AT THEIR OWN. IF THERES A RESEMBLANCE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. BEFORE SOMETHING LIKE WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS FILM HAPPENS TO YOU. IT'S O.K. TO BE GRUNGE. I DON'T MEAN IF YOUR GRUNGE YOU'LL END UP TAKING A WRONG PATH. JUST WATCH WHERE YOU TURN. "BULLY" IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY AND AS YOU WATCH THE MOVIE THE CHARACTERS ARE SO CONVINCING IT CAN BE AT TIMES DISTURBING. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE THEATRICAL CUT OF THE FILM, THERE IS ALSO A DIRECTOR'S CUT. THE THEATRICAL VERSION WAS ENOUGH FOR ME. I'M GUESSING THERE IS MORE NUDITY, VIOLENCE AND LANGAUGE ON THE DIRECTOR'S CUT. I THINK THIS MOVIE WAS VERY WELL DONE. AND I HOPE IT IS TAKEN AS SERIOUS AS IT SHOULD BE.

Summary: this is a great movie IF ...
Review: you'll love this dvd IF you want to see a bunch of under-age kids who are constantly strung out on drugs, use the F word at least three times in every sentence they utter, have illicit sex in every other scene, and thrive on violence as if it were commonplace ... not to mention the most naive parents ever seen on film.

Summary: One of the best movies I've ever seen
Review: This is a chilling true story about a group of alienated kids who decide to kill a bully. The reality of the story and directing is partly what makes this movie so amazing. It's so real the way the characters are depicted, which makes this movie even more chilling. The most disturbing part about this movie is the way these kids so carelessly plan a murder. They go around casually telling people what they plan on doing, and they do not even plan it out. Also, they do not even begin to consider the consequences of their actions.

The way they all deny their actions, and speak of their actions as if they've done nothing wrong is another factor in making this movie disturbing and thrilling. This is one of the best movie's I've ever seen. The acting is superb and the directing by the great Larry Clark will not be soon forgotten.

Summary: Stays with you...
Review: This film was another one of those that is hard to get off of your mind after viewing it. It was very disturbing and hard to watch, but it needs to be seen by mature viewers. This one is definitely not for young adults or kids, for that matter. It is, after all, a Larry Clark movie. Like his other film "Kids", this one also makes you think of your children and the people they hang around with, and most of all, what they participate in. The teenagers in this movie are involved in a daily habit of sex and drugs.

It's the story of a group of friends, and how they deal with a particular member in the group who has raped two of the girls, and beats up on his best friend, a surfer who has taken the abuse for years, but has finally decided that he will not take it anymore. He and his girlfriend plan to murder the sadistic bully in the group, and they do. It's horrifying.

This is a very explicit film that is extremely hard to watch. It needs to be seen, but not by everyone. Mature viewers only, particularly those in the 20+ group. Those with weak tolerance towards gritty material may want to skip this one.

Summary: Man, what a good freaking movie.
Review: I was blown away by this movie. And I'm rarely blown away by movies. There was almost NOTHING wrong about it.

Well shot, great cinematography, great script, great music. But I feel like saying all that lessons the sheer power it had and the immense feeling I felt watching it. It said so much about high school and kids and life and it was just so freaking honest and true.

Maybe the best thing, and most delighting, about this movie though is the acting. Literally everyone is just so freaking good. Everying was just so real, it made me so happy and excited and engaged.

I can't say enough good things about this movie. Go see it right now. I'm just upset that no one saw it in the theaters when it came out. I heard stuff like, "it was needlessly violent." It's not even that freaking violent. The violence is real and actually made me cringe and feel something.

Anyway. Go see this movie.

Summary: Gross, disturbing, funny and impressive.
Review: A friend of mine let me borrow this movie and I had no idea what it was about. I knew it was from the director if "Kids" so I sort of prepared myself for anything. I don't think you CAN prepare yourself for this one.

I'm not so old that I don't remember what it was like to be a teenager and the thing that disturbed me most about this movie was how much some of the characters reminded me of people I knew and still know. I had no idea where the movie was going, so when it turned out that: A) it was about a group of kids that plan to murder the local bully and B) it was a true story; I was creeped out pretty bad. I can't stop thinking about this movie, it got under my skin pretty bad. I love it when a movie like this somehow gets under my radar so that by the time I finally see it, it's very unexpected. I'd like to call it "an unexpected pleasure" but it was far to complex to be called a pleasure.

I don't want to spoil this movie for anyone else, but suffice to say, it is an incredible flick. The most incredible thing about it is how real it feels. The performances, the characters, the stupid situations, the way they speak their dialogue and shots of those blank expressions on their faces. The cast of young actors in this film are just incredible. Some people have accused it of glamorizing the event, but this movie is about as glamorous as a shotgun blast to the head. There was nothing sexy about the sex scenes. Even the more "romantic" ones seemed desperate and gross. The director showed these kids as kids like this truly are: lost, stupid, wasted, desperate and possessed of an apathy so powerful that not even death can penetrate it.

The most incredible thing is that no matter how stupid they are, no matter what terrible things they did to one another, there's still something so sad about them that, at least for me, I couldn't help but feel sorry for all of them. They're all broken somehow. It's like watching a dog with a broken leg limping down the street. The same dog that would bite you if you pulled over and tried to help it. Just cause he bit you doesn't make him any less pathetic.

I can't say I loved this movie, but I have to say that it made me think and moved me more than any movie has in a long time. Probably the first movie I've seen like it since "Requiem for a Dream." Some people won't be able to see the forest for all of the trees, but if you're reading this, you really need to give it a view. Larry Clark has a better understanding of America's kids than most of the parents out there.

Summary: BULLY
Review: Did not see the director's cut. Would strongly advise getting it over the theatrical release. All in all, the movie wasn't bad, the acting...on the part of Brad Renfro and Nick Stahl was excellent.
Photography was so-so. Sound track was good. It was obvious that the movie had deleated scenes. Get the director's cut, if possible.

Summary: A disturbing, powerful film
Review: Larry Clark's film "Bully" follows a dysfunctional group of Florida teens as their lives take a turn towards a horrific tragedy. Central to the story is the relationship between Marty (played by Brad Renfro) and Bobby (Nick Stahl), who work together at a sandwich shop. Bobby physically and verbally brutalizes Marty, thus laying the groundwork for the tragedy that follows.

"Bully" is a frightening portrayal of a nihilistic adolescent wasteland. The characters' lives revolve around violent video games, illegal drugs, and exploitative sex. Amoral and disconnected from parents and community, these kids are like a cluster of human time bombs.

The film features superb performances from its talented young cast; at times "Bully" feels like a gritty documentary. After seeing Stahl portray a rather nice character in "In the Bedroom," I was both shocked and impressed by his portrayal of the sociopathic youth in "Bully." And fans of the talented Renfro will be again rewarded; he brings a palpable pain and fury to this flawed, but strangely sympathetic character.

The graphic sex, homoeroticism, and violence of "Bully" will probably be too much for many viewers to take. But if you endure this disturbing film, you will see a compelling vision of fear, paranoia, and a desparate need for love and acceptance.
