Summary: Larry Clark's best
Review: The argument that Larry Clark can only make exploitation films certainly has merit; but with BULLY, he's found a subject so perfectly suited to his style of filmmaking that the end result seems downright naturalistic. It's impossible to claim that Clark is glamorizing sex or violence, because both become so repulsive by the end. The feeling of watching this is like smoking an entire pack of cigarettes for the first time--and that's the very effect it SHOULD have. We tend to criticize movies in which the promiscuity and violence have genuine consequences, not the ones that deserve criticism, the ones that depict these same things in a sanitized, cartoonish way. Clark has made a truly disturbing and brilliant film, that captures a lost generation of kids better than anything since RIVER'S EDGE. Not to mention he gets genuinely talented performances, particularly from Renfro and Bijou Phillips, who must be the most courageous young actress in show business.

Summary: PLEASE MARTY-WHATEVER I DID IM SORRY-IM SORRY
Review: I watched this film cause I like Brad Renfro and Nick Stahl-but I have to say that Nick Stahl was the best one!

It seemed that the girls were clueless or something-no wonder they got smacked around!

One disturbing scene is of course the murder scene-where Bobby Kent gets stabbed in the back of the neck-then in the stomach-then he got his neck sliced open-Marty pushed down so deep with the knife that it crushed Bobbys voice box!

I bought the book Bully:A True Story Of High School Revenge-and there is a picture of Bobbys body-half in-half out of the water where his friends threw him after they killed him!

Bobbys best friends belived the gators would eat his body before the police could find it!

TURN THOSE GODDAMN LIGHTS OFF ALI!

HES NOT DEAD!

HE HAS TO BE DEAD-THEY SLICED HIS THROAT-THEY BEAT HIS HEAD IN WITH A BASEBALL BAT!

I want to know what the real Bobby Kent looked like!

Summary: This movie is as great as the book!!!
Review: I read the book Bully by Jim Schutze about 4 years ago, and it never has left my mind. I think I identified so much with it because the people in the story are around my age group. I've always been skeptical of movie adaptions for books, but this one is brilliant!
Bijou Phillips does a wonderful job portraying Ali, the best friend of Lisa played by Rachel Miner. Brad Renfro and Nick Stahl are great as Marty and Bobby. For me though, Leo Fitzpatrick-who plays the hitman, does a really outstanding performance. There is just something about him that made this movie. And who can forget the gorgeous Michael Pitt? I also really enjoyed Kelli Garner as Heather. You can tell they all had a lot of fun making this film. It is just one of those movies that doesn't portray life in black or white. If you read the book and liked it, you have got to see this.

Summary: Reefer Madness
Review: Despite it's basis in reality, in the hands of Larry Clark this is an exploitation film. You have to be a pretty green variety of moron to be shocked at juvenile violence, because they have ALWAYS been primary offenders in almost every criminal category. Teenage brains struggle with moral restraint and long-term consequences--what else is new? You're supposed to be horrified by this suburban melodrama, by all the sex and drugs, but it's pretty unrealistic for a film based upon reality. It does have its moments though, and there is plenty of good acting. Brad Renfro is mesmerizing on screen--I don't know why, but he always is. Nick Stahl paints a complex picture of a person you can't entirely hate, which is very realistic, because in real life you never meet a person that is entirely evil or entirely good--except for CATHOLIC BISHOPS, who are the proverbial wolves in sheep's clothing. Bloody perverts. But I digress. Leo Fitzpatrick, who was so effectively perverse in 'Kids,' does another outstanding job here as a straight-talking thug with experience. He has an uncanny feel for character, and is downright fascinating to watch. The acting is always spot on in a Larry Clark film, but you have to question his motivations in making films like these. What does a guy like this do for an encore?

Summary: Please watch this movie!
Review: It's like watching a horrible car wreck. You're discusted but you can't turn away. This is by far the most graphic sexual and violent movie I've seen for a while. You truly feel like you're watching a bunch of real kids who don't know that a camera is there. If you're like me you still remember watching KIDS for the first time. It's better! After you watch it you'll be trying to think of all the people you know who would dig this type of movie so you can make them rent it.

Summary: very, very disturbing
Review: i saw this on hbo. and i also saw the previous opus, kids, on hbo. all i can say is.....what can i say? as a parent of a teenager, and a teenager who put up with abuse from my peers, both of these movies were frightening and sad. bully is a shocking look at how kids interact with each other. how a pecking order is established, and how the bottom-rung kids are treated. this is not an exception, but the norm. the kids' reactions to the treatment, while over the top, is felt by every outcast bullied kid in the world. the hardest part of watching is listening to the bully beg for his life.

Summary: sleazy, inarticulate. But enough about the director
Review: A riotously funny film throughout, despite some questionable directional choices. Daniel Franzese deserves special mention. Love the guy who threw up a huge dollop of DNA next to the corpse. If they are all so dumb howcometheyallspeakinthisridiculouslyfastmanner? I'm dumb and I speak slowly, which is worrying. Is there really a dumb and dumber?

Judging only from on-line personal experience, the lack of civility amongst young Americans portrayed in the film seems accurate. But for a culprit, look no further than the older generation or Larry Clark for starters. His cussing on set in the special features includes liberal use of the mother word amongst others, in front of a 16 year old cast member. Perhaps he doesn't want to patronise them, but this goes perniciously in the wrong direction. Wash your mouth out with soap, Sir. Also, his interview is as inarticulate as the stoner kids he's portraying and there doesn't seem to be the presence of a single idea swirling around his head, which says a lot. But he spoke slowly which made me feel a little more secure.

Summary: Larry Clark's most powerful film since KIDS
Review: BULLY is based on a true story. Truth hurts. Reality can be ugly. Larry Clark is a talented film maker who puts this message across in his films. Films mature adults can choose to watch in the comfort of their own homes, giving them a glimpse of life they hopefully never have to endure, and leaving the viewer a stronger & more liberated person. This didn't stop SPCS from stopping it screening at a film fest in Wellington 30 MINUTES before it was due to screen!! Very democratic of them! Maybe people affected by that should picket SPCS President Rev. Gordon Dempsey's church at Easter for their celebration of the crucifixion? I used to be a Catholic & I can honestly say that Catholicism was more damaging than any movie I've seen. Anyway, I strongly encourage you to rent/buy this DVD. It's POWERFUL. It's PROVOCATIVE. It's HARD-HITTING (in both the literal & figurative senses). This is THE first DVD I've managed to talk my local video store into getting. I just hope it won't be the last.
Marty (Brad Renfro) is a teen surfer who is the victim of continuous verbal and physical abuse from his scuzzy best friend Bobby (Nick Stahl), who he relies upon to take him to the beach to surf. But when Bobby rapes Marty's girlfriend Lisa (Rachel Miner- amusingly Macaulay Culkin's ex-wife!) and her friend Abby (Bijou Phillips) Bobby finally reaches the end of his rope and with the help of a group of alienated teens who have also been victimised by Bobby, they decide the only way to put an end to all their suffering is to murder him (a very bloody scene, but in context, justifiably so).
BULLY is one of the best movies I've seen in the past year, with the entire cast giving brave and gutsy performances, especially Nick Stahl who is frighteningly convincing. Renfro is equally good as his victim. Highly recommended, but viewer discretion is advised. Half of the audience at the screening I attended walked out during the scene where Bobby rapes Abby; but I'll leap to the film's defence that this is what happened, it isn't sugar coated or dumbed down; so Larry Clark and his cast should be commended for their daring and bravery.
BULLY is not recommended for anyone under 18 or those who are squeamish or offend easily; but is a film that deserves to be seen. This is essential viewing for parents who may find a lot here to discuss with their kids. (Not in OZ/NZ- it's R18: adults only. That's Vidiot_y2k doing his bit for the "public good".) And no, contrary to what SPCS say this movie is NOT a) responsible for increased crime in NZ. Blame poverty, abuse, drugs...but MOVIES? Come on!!; or b)(oddly) targeted at 16 year olds - these idiots never fail to amaze me. So I encourage you to put BULLY on your list of must see movies. This has to be one of the ten best movies I've seen this year. So who are you going to believe? Me, or some group of hormonally-challenged sad sacks who dismiss anybody who disagrees with their views as a "minority"? Bring KEN PARK to Dunedin!!!

Summary: MY CONTROVERSIAL THOUGHTS!
Review: FOR STARTERS I SAW THIS FLICK AND I MUST SAY THAT ALTHOUGH I DO NOT CONDONE MURDER "BOBBY KENT" HAD WHATEVER HAPPENED COMING TO HIM SOON IF NOT BY HIS FRIENDS BY SOME STRANGERS...
BY WATCHING THIS FILM I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT BOBBY SUFFERED OF SOME TYPE OF EXCESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER...
LOOK AT HIS ACTIONS AND TEMPER!!!
IT'S A SAD MOVIE AT THE SAME TIME CAUSE IT SHOWS HOW MUCH PARENTS ARE MISSING OUT OF THEIR KIDS LIVES....THEY LIVED A MIDDLE CLASS LIFE WITH NO WORRIES; BUT THE STREETS, DRUGS, SEX, ETC. CONTRIBUTED TO THIS TRAGEDY...THE SENTENCE THAT THESE GUYS RECEIVED FOR THE MURDER WAS UNFAIR, I THINK...
BOBBY KENT BRUTALLY RAPED FEMALES BULLIED HIS FRIEND TO THE POINT OF INSANITY...
PEOPLE ACT OUT OF FEAR AND I THINK THAT WAS THE UNFORTUNATE CASE FOR THESE TEENS...

Summary: Very Real and true
Review: I didn't even know this movie was a true story until after I saw it. Then when I read about what happened in real life, I had a new appreciation for this film because it stayed so true to the real story and did a great job developing the characters. It's about a teenager going nowhere in life, Marty (Brad Renfro), who is being bullied by his supposed best friend, Bobby. Bobby bullies everybody, he's raped Marty's girlfriend and her best friend. As a result, Marty and a group of friends decide that the world would be a better place if they murdered Bobby. The film is really graphic, in violence and sexuality. It's very realistic and touching. If you liked the movie "Kids", you should like this movie. It's less like a documentary than "Kids" and has more of a story.
