Rating: Summary: Sexiness aside, the sentimentality was a big draw. Review: Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of porn in any sense of the word, but I've always been a sucker for odd ball attractions. I think Wheeler and Emily more than qualify. He the brooding and essentielly lonely man of wealth, she the somewhat naive and sweet natured transplant from the midwest. Hmmm, on second thought, maybe it's just more cliche than oddball. Well, however you look at it, it's an enjoyable movie if just for the locale and soundtrack. And I must say that Mickey Rourke has never been more appealing to me. I also thought Bisset did an outstanding job with Claudia, very brash and quite the ball buster. I originally saw this movie when it aired on Showtime and was disappointed by the video release which had cut out what I thought were crucial scenes with Emily and Wheeler, no sex, but emotional outbursts and confessions. When viewed without them, you wonder how some of the following scenes came about. Perhaps a director's cut could rememdy that. More Zalman King goodies that I liked were Wild Orchid 2: Two Shades of Blue (although how this would qualify as a sequel always had me scratching my head) and Red Shoe Diaries (more great music and a sexy pre-X-Files David Duchovny).
Rating: Summary: Getaway in a box Review: As a dedicated Zalman King fan, this is my all time favorite. It's not the plot, which, to be honest about it, is more developed than most in this genre, and it's not the acting, but the combination of excellent music (soundtrack a MUST!), gorgeous location, skillful directing, and the real passion that makes up for acting ability makes this up there with a hot bath and a Black Lace as a way to spend an evening. Go from this to Delta of Venus.
Rating: Summary: It ain't great art, but is is steamy fun. Review: Directed by Mr. 80's soft-core, Zalman King, and starring Mickey Rourke, Carre Otis, and Jaqueline Bisset, it's a nice evening's entertainment. There are a number of sexy scenes set amid Carnival in Rio. Jaqueline Bisset is much prettier, sexier, and a better actress than the female lead, Carre Otis, even though Bisset is 20 years older. The plot is incidental, but the look of the film is exotic and appealing.
Rating: Summary: acting who cares, the music, the locations, the mood Review: For a first film by Carrie thought she did the best with her talent level, Mickey Rourke was great, by far the music and location are the draw to this movie. It is one that we are putting in our video collection, and one we recommed.
Rating: Summary: Compelling story! Review: I absolutely love this movie! MICKEY ROURKE does a GREAT job and I liked Carre Otis too - they DEFINITELY have chemistry! - it's NOT your ordinary love story but it pulls you in and keeps you there. Add in great music (I bought the CD too), and beautiful scenery - well, I'll be watching this movie a lot!
Rating: Summary: Good, but wait for the director's cut Review: I first saw this movie in the theater. When I finally got the VHS, I was scandalized to realize that some important scenes had been cut, most notably parts of the Rourke-Otis love scene. Why do these guys think we're buying this film -- for the witty dialogue?
Rating: Summary: The best love movie in the 20 century. Review: I have already seen this movie 10 or more times. This movie completely changed my nature. When you see this movie you can feel the fresh wind from the ocean, the smell of salt sea water and wild orchids. You always remember the condescending smile of Wheele. It was very interesting to see the regeneration of Emily and at the same time dying away of Claudia. Unhappy Claudia! Your black dress trick did not back Wheele. Did you remember her spiritual bankruptcy eyes during the carnival? I think that Zalman King is a great schemer of ideas and a good psychologist. Who is the main hero of this movie? Music! I am ready to pay 1 mln.USD for composer who wrote the Main Love Title.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining To A Point Review: I have owned Wild Orchid for quite a few years and from the beginning thought it was a bit out there. Some of it doesn't fit, some of it doesn't make sense and some of it is just plain dumb. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because I like Mickey Rourke. Even though he does look at bit beat up in this movie and kind of scary looking at first with the slicked down hair he is practically oozing sex. Carre Otis's character, Emily, seems a bit aloof and childlike. She is bombarded by scenes of people having sex in an abandoned building, watching 2 people have sex in a limo. Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) almost seems to enjoy watching Emily squirm a bit. Wheeler is sort of detached, but wanting someone he can trust. Its tough to make sense of this movie because honestly the best part is the end. Now I have the unrated version so it shows more than the R-rating (for a movie like this one - unrated or NC-17 is the way to go)-the part where Wheeler and Emily make love finally. It is very arousing to say the least. I must give it to Zalman King. He knows how far to go to where the movie gets into your mind, but yet he doesn't go for the gratuitous sex. I suggest Delta of Venus, which is another Zalman King experience.
Rating: Summary: I really wanted to like this movie ... Review: I honestly hoped this would be a good movie, but it was slow, dull, cluttered, and hard to follow. That may sound harsh, but I've watched school board meetings on public access television that were more compelling. Mickey Roarke is definitely a good actor, but seemed uninspired or maybe distracted in this. Carre Otis was also disappointing. I just don't think this role was a good match for her, even though she hadn't really been tested much as an actress before this. Also, if you look at Carre today, she is one of the most beautiful women you could ever see, but she is way, way, way too thin and unhealthy-looking in this film. (Mini-soapbox over the film and modeling industries' distorted expectiations) Yes, maybe she should have eaten more roast beef and mashed potatoes. I wouldn't necessarily recommend you don't rent it or buy it, but know that if you do, it may fall short of your expectations.
Rating: Summary: To a Woman's Heart Review: I love the "Wild Orchid". It is my favorite movie. I have to say, for a movie that deals with erotic sexual situations, this movie handles the subject with sensitivity. It is not a movie based on dirty sex, but instead it is based on passion, fantasy, and sensuality. The location in which it was filmed is in reality the sexual capital of the world, Brazil and I applaud the creator for the decision to base the movie there. The music is a whole other case, of brillance. The music is superb. The soundtrack is unforgettable. Only one error, the song, "It only has to happen once" by Ambitious Lovers sould have been incorporated in the CD soundtrack. This is the best movie, and Mickey Rourke is the perfect wild and in control lead actor. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
