Summary: Ranks with Mr. Scorsese's Best
Review: "Kundun" is a near-perfect marriage of sound and vision, thanks to Philip Glass' mesmerizing score (get the CD) and Roger Deakins' mindblowing cinematography. It deserves a place alongside "Mean Streets", "Taxi Driver" and "Goodfellas" as one of Martin Scorsese's greatest movies.

Review: The first time I saw Kundun was in Cincinnati. A perfect 10, in my judgement. Haven't seen a better film or heard a better score in about 10 years too. Even after the film was over and the credits were coming up, Philips Glass's absolutely haunting music had us glued to our chairs. One guy rose to go, remained standing for a few seconds, then sat down again. No one left the theater until the last note had been played. This is one of those movies that my wife and I immediately decided we should watch again. We did. And it was as haunting as before. The final 20 minutes of Kundun is the greatest piece of cinema ever made.

Summary: Unknown Legend ... a pure masterpiece
Review: This movie really didn't get much hype and I guess I prefer it that way. It stands alone as an artistic masterpiece that not everyone should watch ... only those who understand what a good movie is. Scorsese might have neared perfection in this movie.

Summary: Great imagry, lacking in substance
Review: In an era when every other movie that comes out is three plus hours long, you would think that Scorsese could have devoted more time to the biography of the 14th Dalai Lama. Unfortunately, he does not. The movie fails as an introduction to both the Dalai Lama and Tibet in that too many broad strokes are taken in the story. It's almost as if Scorsese assumes the audience will know the signifigance of the Dalai Lama and the symbolism inherent throughout the film. As an introduction to DVD, it both succeeds and fails. "Kundun" is absoloutly gorgeous in sound and picture. It really must be seen on DVD in order to be appreciated. In this way, it succeeds. Alas, the DVD of "Kundun" fails in not taking advantge of the special features which would have been so appropriate for this film. Some background or documentary footage of the Dalai Lama and/or Tibet along with Directory commentary would have been a great assett. Deleted scenes would also have been nice as "Kundun," at 135 minutes, appears rushed due to time constraints. All in all, an excellent choice to show off the picture and sound capabilities of DVD, but not much else.

Review: I have not seen the video but.. who cares. Video, even wide screen video doesn't do any movie justice. Thats why you have to watch it at a theatre. That must certainly be the case with this movie ,because to really enjoy the atmosphere that Martin Scorsese creates alone deserves nothing less than that. This movie must surely be one of the most evocative ever made, the sheer beauty of the imagery and the indeed heartwrenching story telling and the fact that it all happened for real, all combine to tell us that Martin Scorsese is simply a pure genius who would ,if the academy award people who decide who gets an oscar, would not judge a movie by how much it made at the box-office, have gotten all of last year's oscars

Summary: Rent don't buy - Can't justify the DVD purchase
Review: If you just like collecting DVDs, then ignore my advise. I buy DVDs to learn more about the movie as well as have an excellent copy. This is a must see movie! I highly recommend it to any Martin Scorsese and, of course, Dali Lama fan. A very moving picture where the story is basically a piece of history. Unfortunately, there is nothing added to the DVD version other than a trailer. I was hoping for a director's commentary (I like to hear Mr. Scorsese talk about his pictures) or a behind the scenes piece to make the purchase of the DVD more justifiable. The quality of the transfer is excellent. I recommend renting the DVD/VHS and hope that a Special Edition of this movie with more additions comes out in the future. I'll watch my copy and probably buy the new release...

Summary: Definately the best movie of my time...
Review: I may only be 15 years old, but this is the greatest film I have ever seen. Martin Scorsese is the only film director who could appropriately capture this film for what it is. I was moved to tears while watching, and there are several scenes I will never forget. I give it far more than 5 stars! When "Titanic" won film of the year at the Oscars, I rejoiced -- I had not yet seen "Kundun." Now, looking in retrospect, I kick myself for ever thinking "Titanic" deserved so many awards. "Kundun" is by far the most well-made, heart-wrenching films ever made, and definately the most deserving of every Oscar possible. Though, it is true Oscars do not make a film -- it is the inspiratioin behind the film which does. Thank you, Your Holiness.

Review: I am currently reading His Holinesses autobiography, and am at the point where the film ends. Thank you Martin, for such a beatiful and moving account of the early years of His Holiness, The 14th Dalia Lama. I was touched by the grace, and candor in which the story was told. And yes, I agree with a few of the other reviewers here, what was implied, instead of spelled out, was simply remarkable. I think I was as touched by those 'little' things as I was the whole picture. Kundos!
