Rating: Summary: cliche-ridden drama Review: "Varsity Blues" is a tedious, shallow and formulaic tale of smalltown high school football hijinks wherein the adults are even more developmentally disabled than the hormone-crazed teenagers they've produced. The film manages to encompass just about every cliche of this wellworn genre. There is, for instance, the maniacal coach, driving his players to dangerous extremes on the field and circumventing sound medical advice for his own personal glory. Then we have the overbearing fathers obsessively attempting to recapture their former glory through their pumped-up progeny. Don't forget the crybaby fat boy who throws up buckets of food at the seemingly numberless drunken orgies the boys participate in. What about the sensible boy whose head is not turned by sudden fame and fortune, and the supportive football-hating girlfriend who tries to keep her sweetie in tow despite his sudden ascension to the rank of football hero? All this doesn't take into account the bubbleheaded sexpot, sex ed teacher who moonlights at the local strip joint; the befuddled cops; the drunken, smartmouthed jock who hijacks a cop car and spends the evening joyriding through town with a bevy of naked, nubile girls from the neighborhood, or the horny young lady who dresses down and splashes on a whipped cream bikini only to be rejected by the pure-in-heart hero. Then we arrive at the final game and the unconvincing showdown between the villainous coach and the righteously rebellious players led by the hero Moxon. Who will be victorious? If you have to ask, perhaps this is your first time at one of these movies. As this is an MTV movie production, the football scenes are, of course, pumped up with a blaring rock soundtrack that tries in vain to get the adrenalin flowing and the emotions charged. The major hindrance to this film comes down to the simple fact that none of these characters or situations convey the slightest aura of reality or believability. For a far better, struggling-to-get-out-of-smalltown-America film, check out 1999's "October Sky" or 1983's "All The Right Moves."
Rating: Summary: Many hidden messages Review: I avoided this movie like the plague because I thought it was another football glory movie (and I can't stand "Dawson's Creek,") but I saw it finally and this film is about more than football. It's about dreams and living your own life. James Van Der Beek is John Moxon, a high-school senior who plays football in small-town Texas because it's family tradtion. But secretly he reads Vonnegut and hopes to get into Brown University. The situation is not helped by his verbally abusive football coach (Jon Voight). The coach hates him especially beacuse he stands up to him. The guys on the team get away with almost everything, like drinking, seeing strippers, etc (and yes, that's true to life). But the film has a good message of being your own man and not letting others live vicariously through you.

Rating: Summary: A very blue and depressing movie. Review: Varsity Blues [Rated R, Starring Jon Voight and James Van Der Beek] You would never have thought the most bleek and depressing film of the year happens to be about football but alas it does. Completely conventional and cookie cut outed from other films the outcome; I give 'Varsity' one of my Movie Awards for the year, being the most stereotypic of them all. - CP
Rating: Summary: A Great Movie Review: I really enjoyed the movie. If you have ever went to a high school where sports ruled the school, you can relate to the movie a lot. I think that it was very well writen and I really liked the casting. It was nice to see a movie where it is actually pretty close to the truth about sports and small towns.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Coming of Age Film Review: Scott Caan plays the part of Tweeder so well. Paul walker also plays his part well except for when he was talking about that dream he had, that part was too corny.
Rating: Summary: Buy it and ask for a refund... Review: Ok, let's getit moving right away: this was a horrible movie and if the guys who recommended it to me weren't my friends I'd strangle them. Why two points you may ask. The answer is simple: there are only two good things about this movie. First point for the patheticaly authentic setting of a little in-the-middle-of-nowhere Texas town. The way we are shown how all the life in this town depends and is based on football is so disgusting that it makes you think that the rest of the world only consists of geniuses. The other point goes to the very talented mr. Jon Voight who plays a baddly written role magnificently. But the rest is nothing. James Van Der Beek should've skiped this movie to keep his CV clean (his accent is pathetic). You can predict every "twist and turn" of the movie. The background music is mixed awfuly with the picture (although many of the songs featured are good). The script is full of holes (especially how Van Der Beek constantly changes his attitude towards football). And jokes...my God...they can't even be called jokes (the 'religious' kid ? ). But if you are the type of person who has never time to follow the whole football game, then this movie is for you, cause even Super Bowl hasn't got as nice shots of it as this one. The other possibility for liking it would be being a mainstream teen from Southern States...
Rating: Summary: Three words-whipped cream bikini Review: Listen guys....this ain't a great movie. I wasn't expecting a great movie, but I really was amazed at how cliche nearly each scene actually was. Not real depth in any of the adult characters. That is the way most high school movies are. The kids know exactly how to act, and the adults are crazy stereotypes. Why not give us a reason why the Jon Voight character is so sadistic. We know there are guys out there like them(Bobby Knight, Woody Hayes) but give us a backstory instead of turning him to a cartoon. I will say this. The character played by the large kid(I can't remember his name in the movie) actually could have been a cliche, but it wasn't. It was played rather touchingly by this young actor....but once again when there could have been some sort of payoff between this kid and the coach or with James Van Der Beek's character, it fizzled away. Maybe the filmakers were too scared to have the kid kill himself or attempt to shoot the coach....either of those scenarios would have been better than his speech that wound up being about nothing. So why am I giving this film three stars? Three words-whipped cream bikini. So what? I am a guy, and this was the best scene in the film, so deal with it. Also, when the guys go to the local strip club and they see the sex-ed teacher there, pretty stupid....but I was glad it was there. But I don't think that women that beautiful would be in a podunk town's strip club, do you?
Rating: Summary: GO TEAM GO! Review: I'm gonna tell you what this movies all about. It's all about soundtrack, hard-hitting football, humour, a good-looking lead and some gorgeous women. What, what's that? You wanna hear about the storyline! What for? I just told you it's full of good-looking women! What more do you want? Ok, the star quarter-back gets injured. The second string quarter-back gets his chance, that's Van der Beek in case you didn't know. Anyway, he gets too play and guess what, he does the business! Then the movie goes along with all the trappings of stardom that come with his new role and how he has to deal with it. However, it's more complex than that! You see, the whole town is about football. This means that if you're a football player you get to do whatever you want and you know what, they do! They go to strip clubs, party, steal cop cars etc etc... Jon Voight. What can you say about his acting? I'll tell you, it's brilliant, brilliantly funny that is. You can't beat his acting with all the eyes winks, facial expressions and voice. Amazing! Overall, I would advise you to buy this movie as the action is hard-hitting, the humour hard and fast, and the soundtrack keeps it all going at a nice pace. Buy this film, even if you're not part of the MTV generation, I know you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: There Goes My Heroes Review: I was wowed by this film and its cast from the first frame to the last. James Van Der Beek has earned my respect. This one get my vote for the best high-school football movie of the 20th century.
