Rating: Summary: BEST OL' SKOOL FLICK OUT Review: I WAS JUST 4 YEARS OLD WHEN THIS MOVIE CAME OUT. WHEN I CAME UP OF AGE I CHECKED OUT MY FATHER'S COLLECTION AND HE HAD IT. WHEN I SAW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME, I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. ESPECIALLY THE WAY HOW "PRIEST'S" '73 ELDERADO WAS FIXED UP. IF ONLY IF IT WAS OUT ON DVD, I WOULD MOST DEFINITELY MAKE SURE I'LL GET IT!!!!
Rating: Summary: R.I.P. RON O'NEAL! I WILL MISS YOU! GOD BLESS YOUR WIFE! Review: I WAS SO SORRY TO HEAR RON PASSED AWAY THIS MONTH OF CANCER! I KNOW HOW THAT SICKNESS CAN TAKE LIVES! MY FATHER DIED OF CANCER! I THINK SUPERFLY WAS ONE OF THE BEST BLACK ACTION MOVIES EVER! I WONT CALL IT AN EXPLOIT! REST IN PEACE RON! MY DEEPEST REGRET TO HIS WIFE, AND FAMILY! ***** SUPERFLY 5 STARS!
Rating: Summary: Fantasic flick, but atrocious audio Review: I write this review in regard to the DVD version of this movie in particular. Superfly is indeed a great movie, from its gritty ambiance, outlandish costumes, superb soundtrack, unsentimental dialogue and straight-up action. However, the sound quality on the DVD is quite poor, which is an absolute shame in light of the music that is a genuine reflection of its place and era. Even with the volume turned up much higher than for any other DVDs I have, the dialogue and music were still extremely muffled. While I am usually not hung up on technical features, the poor quality of the audio substantially diminished my enjoyment of an otherwise classic movie, which explains the above rating.
Rating: Summary: soundtrack gets * * * * * but the movie is zzzzzzzzzzzz..... Review: let's start with the music by the late great curtis mayfield. the music score he did for SUPERFLY is absoulutely sensational! listen to mayfield's "pusherman"=powerful, haunting. i will buy the soundtrack in an amazon minute. as for the movie, it's amateur night! oh so poorly acted, oh so poorly directed. who cares if critics loved it or if the film was accused back in '72 for glorifying drug usage? it is just terrible. check out the chase scene between priest and a druggie in the beginning. a cable can be seen swinging in front of the camera. later on, another drug addict opens a car door and we can easily see the reflection of the movie crew on the car window. this is the most boring crime drama ever made. a snail's pace flick. the fight sequence at the end must've been directed by The Six Million Dollar Man w/ its slo mo and missed punches and kicks. i could go on and on but....SUPERFLY ain't for me. stick to the SHAFT series and even the 2000 version.
Rating: Summary: He's got a plan to stick it to the "man" Review: My friend and I were just talkin' best film scores recently and this was one of my favorite top 10. Lots of people will say "Shaft" but main title only and after that the film goes flat for me. This film has always remained a rougue in the Blax genre because of it's subject matter. The anti-heroic pimp, (Ron o'Neal) out to make his last score his biggest before retiring was still a taboo subject for that era and was an untimely coffin nail for Black films to come This is by no means to be an entertainment film nor should it be as a message film but it be reconized as a gothic testamonial to modern day noir and still holds it's own as prime example of supreme 70's film making.
Rating: Summary: A great period piece Review: One of the best blaxplotation films to come out of the 70s. A definite must view for anyone interested in 70s pop culture. Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack is superb.
Rating: Summary: The Best of Blacksplo Review: One of the first and best Black exploitatins movies. Superfly really isn't very exploitative, it's more like film noin instead. It centers around a big time cocaine delaer named priest and his attempt to get out of the business, but not without at least one last score. Ron Oneal is cast perfectly as priest the pouting, long haired anti-hero. Curtis Mayfields wondefully funky score keeps this movie moving and helps to elevate Superfly from the confines of blacksploitation. Hard biting and energetic from beginig to end, this movie is a classic. Now when are they going to release this movie on DVD.
Rating: Summary: I'm your pusher............................................. Review: People who aren't affiliated with the streets, mistake what some Black males do for survival as ghetto mentality. In many cases as unfortunate as it was, and still is to this day...it's a means to an end. (Not in all cases)
SUPERFLY...That's the ghetto super hero. Adorned in the lastest gear, with the hottest whip, and everything about him "I'M LOVIN' IT!" Especially when he knows that he's played his cards long now it's time to get what he can and get out. People always get too greedy in the game, with either a bid in the joint, or a trip to the graveyard!
"All I need is 4 months!" Our "Superfly" hero says to his life long contact who put him in the game. "4 months, and I'm finished, I'll have my 1/2 million and I can retire!" Can a real hustla whose working for the man retire? Is he able to weave through the back stabbing from his life long partner, the ruthless murder of his mentor, and learning that crime does pay?
Ryan O'neal did the damn thang as a hot ass hustla back in the day. For all you newbies, he played the role on "Different World" as Whitlee Gilbert's dad. Still a very captivating Cat! Not to mention Curtis Mayfield, "I'm your pusher..." The music score to this DVD is so HOT!
It showed you how high in ranks drug distribution comes from. I don't believe that this film was exploitive, it if anything it was insightful. I am not looking for excuses for my Brothers/Sisters. In some instances understanding. We need to step the game up people.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO CAST YOUR VOTE FOR PRESIDENT IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE USE OUR VOTE TO COUNT OURSELVES IN!!!!
Rating: Summary: Classic Film&soundtrack with Messages Review: R.I.P Brother Ron O'Neal. what can i say about this film? it's timeless that deals with the Street Hustle, funny time Police officers,&everything else in between.does this not sound like 2004?hard to believe this was 1972 because many of the same issues in this film sound so familiar in this time period we are in.Shelia Frazier is So Fine She makes a Brother pull a Fred G.Sanford on the Spot.I dug the Realness&the constant Messages of the Film.Between what Priest was dealing with&the Genius Sounds of Curtis Mayfield pulsing through each frame you got the big picture&what was going down.Commentary was on Point&the cool thing about this film is that unlike so many films that have big budgets this film does so much with less&makes you think&then you understand so much more. Props to the Entire Crew&Cast on this Gem.
Rating: Summary: One last time around Review: Ron O'Neill is Priest, a big time pusher looking to make one last score with some "superfly" cocaine that has attracted authorities. Parks takes you on a tour of the mean streets with some compelling performances by Julius Harris and Sheila Frazier. Parks also offers his trademark photo montages, set to the groovy music of Curtis Mayfield. The movie presses all the right buttons but doesn't have the grim determination of Shaft, which I think is a much better movie.
