Summary: A beautiful mind indeed
Review: I loved this movie. I saw it 3 times at the cinema, and enjoyed every minute. I saw that others complained about it dullness and simplisity, and it might be right, but I liked it. True, the movie isn't really deep and can't be considered as a documentry movie on the "life and math of John Nash", yet, it is focusing on the more human part of Nash, the husband, the father, the geniuse and the "carzy". After I watched this movie and got impressed from Nash's humanity, I went home and learned more about his math. The charming simplisity of the movie, in my opinion, turns on your curiosity, and after you saw the movie you go and read the book, and go and learn more about Nash's discoveries. In short, this movie causes a chain reaction of learning. I think it can be a great movie to show to high-school students in their first lesson of progressive math, it really make you want to sit and solve math problems. (I really enjoyed my final math exam, sitting there with my pen feeling like John Nash, it was cool.)

Review: O.K. I know this is a "good" movie with good actors and perfect little sets. But, I have to say, the day people start realizing that those characteristics aren't quite enough is the day I'll stop complaining. How is it that people can not see behind the ease of this movie and realize it is excrutiatingly dull and not well thought out? I'd much rather watch a documentary of the life of John Nash than sit through a movie that rushes along just to hit all the "right" moments. It's called editing - a concept Ron Howard missed on this one.The thing I don't like about these over-done Hollywood movies is that everything is just so in place and "right." In order to accurately portray a real life and get people involved in a visceral, intense way is to cut out all the sugar coating and drop huge doses of the heavy sickening reality we all live in. I'm not saying everything in film must be disturbing and cynical. What I'm saying is that film-makers should try to push the envelope and force us to see life in all its glory and all its sadness. This film pretends to be concerned with showing us a hard but glorious life, but fails because it doesn't dig deep enough-it doesn't just throw it all up. It carefully, politely sort of asks us to consider it and this is what I call a weak story and a weak film. If you want to watch movies about people struggling, go watch Happiness or Bully or Storytelling. Don't listen to the hype. This movie is dull, sometimes embarrassing, unrealistic (and yes, I know that John Nash existed and approved of this film) and not an ounce of innovation was felt. Please, everyone start thinking for yourself. Stop believing that slick, perfect movies are great pieces of art. Go watch something raw, something that can laugh at itself like Sleepaway Camp.

Summary: Overrated
Review: Good film and performances from Crowe and Connely. Their best? I don't think so. You want to see their best performances...Go rent/buy L.A. Confidental or The Insider...go rent/buy Requeim for a Dream. Now, those are some fantastic performances and films. Oscar for Howard? That just proves that the Oscars are a huge marketing joke! Where was Spielberg and A.I.??? How about Lynch and Mulholland Drive??? What about Jackson and LOTR??? Where was Nolan and Memento?!?!?

Summary: It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This
Review: No matter what anyone else says, this one will remain one of the best films for a long time to come. Crowe's reputation will rest on it for the rest of his life (a couple more like this and he can join the great ones - it would help if he can keep his home in Coff's Harbour though!) This DVD version belongs in every serious film collector's library. It also belongs in every teacher's collection because of the message it brings and the way it touches our humanity.....why we have achieved what we have and what the hope is for our survival. And finally (and most importantly) because it makes an academic a hero....and we need so much more of that in our lives. Personally I found this film to achieve everything that Shine didn't. The DVD version is great because it gives you a crystalline soundtrack without too many extras packed onto it. You won't regret adding this one to your collection, believe me!

Summary: Good, but not the Best Picture
Review: I did like the emotional qualities of "A Beautiful Mind": the fear involved in an invisible spy conspiracy, the frustration of having a husband consumed by a mental disorder, the heartbreaking of finding out that people you care about aren't real. In many ways, it's an engrossing story about John Nash and his very patient but hurt wife. In others, it's a nervous twitch. I don't know the real John Nash nor do I know much about him. I do know that movies tend to portray schizophrenics or other mentally disturbed people (if they even take that risk) with an essence of staring of into space, snapping at people for no reason, walking hunched over, keeping to themselves. Perhaps this is how John Nash is, but watching Russell Crowe act out this madness kind of wears you out. It gets very heartbreaking. And dare I say, it becomes a bit annoying?
I can say that the movie was not as schmaltzy as I thought and the performances were generally good. Jennifer Connelly (as wife Alicia Nash) deserved that Academy Award. Alicia Nash herself deserves an award for standing by her husband through his problems if she is truly the strong person that Connelly portrays.
I believe Ron Howard has probably made better movies that were worthy of Oscar wins (i.e. "Apollo 13"), and I feel like the Academy may have given him his props finally but for the wrong film. Oscar does have a history of rewarding deserving contenders later on for previous losses. Russell could tell you about that. He deserved the award for "The Insider," but not for "Gladiator." But that is an entirely different rant altogether.
I will say that I did LIKE the movie, but I didn't love it enough to want to buy it. You may see things differently and think it's brilliant. I just found Crowe's portrayal too intense and the movie centered too much around that intensity.

Review: This is a poor movie. The story is unrealistic and un-engaging, the directing is poor and the music is dull and repetitive. This movie is severely over-rated. This movie demonstrates that any movie, properly marketed can win an academy award.

Summary: Not pleasant, but excellent
Review: Mental illness is not pleasant. I've known and worked with a person who struggled with mental illness. The reality is horrible for family and friends as well as the person. The movie was excellent and the acting was superb. I've seen Training Day and Russell Crowe was robbed at the Oscars. The age changes and mannerisms used by Crowe in the movie were just outstanding. I loved Russell Crowe in the Gladiator, but was amazed at how well he portrayed John Nash. He stepped up to an entirely new level. Parts of the movie were disturbing, and might have been more entertaining if presented in a different way. I felt sad and disturbed after seeing this movie, but I have great admiration for both John Nash and his wife for simply surviving this life. I'm sure I'll see movies I like and enjoy more, but I don't think any actor will ever top Russell Crowe's performance. This had to be a difficult movie to write, direct, and act in, but everyone did an excellent job.

Summary: Inspite of Russell Crowe
Review: Inspite of Russell Crowe, I reluctantly watched this DVD, mostly because of Ron Howard's involvement in the film. Crowe has a tendency to produce a lack of depth in his characters, especially in his abysmal effort in the lackluster "Gladiator" film. In this film, however, he was able to capture the essence of his character, most likely due to the assistance of Ron Howard. He was also beautifully supported by the extremely attractive and talented Jennifer Connelly. Howard weaved a tale that left me guessing through more than half of the film what was real and what was imagined. I was so impressed with the script and the acting, I watched it one night and again the next morning. Maybe a little sappy at the end but this is a feel good film about a real person overcoming his personal hell to realize greatness. Makes me feel that even with all of our short comings we all have an opportunity if we just look for it. Not one of those awful action flicks without substance but one that develops not only the look of the characters but their very soul as well. Some good extra features on the DVD, including deleted scenes with Ron Howard commentary and a second DVD full of extras, makes this a must have DVD.

Review: I loved the movie! I first rented it with my mom thinking it would be boring, but i watched it over and over. It is completly and amazingly brilliant, all of the actors/actresses played their parts wonderfully. I recomend it to anyone, but make sure you have plenty of time because you will want to watch it over and over. I talked about it for days!
