Summary: A True Story that is Wonderful
Review: I had to watch this movie in my Algebra class and it was so great usually when you think of a movie that you would watch in Algebra you prepare to fall asleep but this movie held my attention throughout the entire story. The premise of the story is that a teacher comes to a public school in California wanting to teach math and when he gets there he realizes how much potential the students have so he leads them into Calculus and has them take the Advanced Placement tests when everything seems so right could something go horribly wrong. This movie is good for everyone there is a little language and mild (very) violence but it is still able to be watched by the young and old. I hope that this review has helped you in making a decision about this film.

Summary: Compelling True Story
Review: I have nothing but praise for this inspirational true story of a determined teacher -- the Bolivian Jaime Escalante -- who pressed his students relentlessly to take their fate in their hands through one of the most difficult pathways imaginable for a high school senior -- the Advanced Placement exam IN CALCULUS. I have unreserved praise for this fine film, and have only one quibble -- it would have been nice to have an alternative Spanish soundtrack. (Yes, I know -- the conversations would have taken place in English -- but Edward James Olmos in Spanish is even more impressive).

Summary: A Stunning Performance by Edward James Olmos
Review: I have nothing but unreserved praise for "Stand and Deliver." Having seen a bunch of movies in the same genre (teacher shakes up classroom and changes the lives of the students), I was hesitant to watch this film. But I must say that Edward James Olmos's performance is absolutely breathtaking. Unlike most of the teacher's we see in these films, his inspiration and charisma seem to be more of an extension of his personality than a false persona created by a script. In fact, most of his scenes in front of the class seem almost ad-libbed-the way an actual teaching environment would operate. While Lou Diamond Phillips is splashed across the cover, the credit for this film needs to be directed towards Olmos. While most recent films about teaching have focused upon the lack of control that teachers execute in the classroom (particularly in underprivileged neighborhoods), this film is about a teacher who is in absolute command of his students. Additionally, rather than solely focus upon the teacher's efforts to transform these kids' lives, the movie truly focuses upon the students themselves and their ambitions and battles with issues of race and discrimination. Watch this film for a refreshing look on the genre.

Review: I have to say that this is simply one of the best films ever made in the 80's. It's a true story about a teacher who teaches high school kids what math is all about. I think for those of ya'll who hadn't seen it should rent it, it's a great movie.

Review: I have used this movie in my Spaniosh classroom in conjunction with the study of Mexico and Central/South America as an example - both for the cultures, but also as a "side" lesson on prejudices, perserverance and the desire to become a better person - I highly recommend this movie!!! The students loved it!

Summary: great story, needs more excitement
Review: I love this movie for all of the inspiration it gives. However, I feel that there wasn't enough excitement in it. There are a lot of issues portrayed in this film, and it seems that they are just touched on. There should have been more excitement about the students passing the AP calculus exam. Although it was a true story, it needed some "hollywood" put in to it. What I mean is that the facts of the movie needed to be elaborated on and made a little more interesting. The movie was about as good as my calculus class. It should have been more.

Review: I really enjoyed watching this movie. It is about a group of misfits in California. There teacher Jaime Escalante is trying to teach them Math. He thinks they are ready for Algebra and then he tries to teach the Calculus. He wants them to pass the AP Calculus Exam. To see what happens get this movie!

Summary: A wonderful movie
Review: I really liked this movie a lot. It was entertaining and uplifting. It was a motivational movie because it proves that anyone can learn if they try. It also shows that hard work pays off, and that even uneducated students can learn something as challenging as calculus. It was also humorous sometimes because the teacher tries to motivate his students by doing strange things. There are some quite funny scenes and some scenes that will bring you to tears. I was amazed by this movie for one strange reason: Mr. Escalante, the calculus teacher, actually looks like a math teacher I had. My math teacher was Spanish too! This movie from the beginning is quite interesting. We learn the Jamie Escalante wants to teach computer science but he can't because the school doesn't have the computers. So he teaches math instead. He motivates his students to work extra hard and they succeed. There are bumps in the road, but the students work hard and study. This is a little-known movie that is both entertaining and educating. I would enjoy watching it over.
