Summary: Unique, Symbolic Genius
Review: Unfortunately, the odd premise for this movie has set it as something of a punchline in pop culture. I must admit, the idea of a film based on the ponderance of mathematics sounds...well... geeky. Yet Pi is undoubtably one of the greatest, grittiest and urbane modern classics. I recommend it to anyone who sees more in life than just daily routine and for anyone who has a passion for solving problems on a deeper level. The metaphors for reason, romance and religion are flawless. The cinematography is excellent and well reflective of the story. I can think of nothing bad about this film. Kudos.

Summary: Simply - Prophetic
Review: To liken Pi to Eraser Head is just about the dummest pigeon-hole I've ever come across. I am a fan of David Lynch as well as Jean Cocteau. Ok, it might be reminiscent of both styles of direction but, that's as far as it goes. Pi is simply brilliant and unique in its own way. To call the film 'a student effort' is an attribute made by someone who obviously hasn't a clue about film-making. The acting is superb. The photography / cinematography is simply wonderful. I should know - I'm in the business. Further reading / stimulation: If you are into advanced mathematics: 'The Anthropic Cosmological Principle' by Barrow and Tipler will make your toes curl. Additional reading - if you're into the patterns of nature, or that giant organism that is 'us', try 'Gaia' by J.E. Lovelock. And if you are into Super-Computers, Kurzweil's 'The Age of Spiritual Machines' maps out the next century for you. Having spent the last eight years researching the subject, I cannot agree that Pi lacks research. For anyone nonplussed after seeing Pi then, watch it again and again. If you still don't get it, my advice is: GIVE UP

Summary: Powerful and Thought Provoking
Review: I was somewhat skeptical when I heard the premise of this movie, but intrigued as well. Deciding to see the movie was one of the best decisions I have made. It was very interesting and exciting. This is not what I would call passive movie viewing, because the entire time, your mind is working to keep up with the plot and the main character, Max. I recommend it highly.

Summary: Original and Powerful
Review: Regardless of what other's say, I myself am madly in love with the indie film industry, and I think that PI is absolutly wonderful. My friend Angela and I watch it at least once a week, and every time I find something else to ponder. This is genius!

Summary: Mystical mathematics
Review: Leaving more unsaid than shown, I found this film to be fascinating as well as thought- and discussion-provoking. For those of us using science as our primary road for a spiritual journey, this movie is a must.

Summary: What existed pre-Big Bang
Review: This is a question serious philosophers snort at when they hear. Any of the most profound questions we come up with as kids are ignored by the know-it-alls who know nothing. Such is a question asked in Pi, a film that works on many levels among them: avant garde filmmaking, asking if there is an intelligence behind all that exists, and finding the pattern of that intelligence, implementation of electronic music effectively, theoretical physics, and chaos theory. Max Cohen finds the secret to the whole universe; both an Einstein and Christ of his generation who can't handle this ultimate knowledge. This film enters a realm we will spend the whole next millenium trying to understand.

Review: Stylish and interesting, but there was obviously very little research involved on the part of the writer and/or director. It's enjoyable enough, and thought-provoking in its way, but it doesn't deserve all the lavish praise it's received. Upon reflection it comes off a lot like a well-made student film by a kid who's more infatuated with moody techno than actual mathematics. I liked the ideas the movie explores, and the aesthetics were captivating, but there is an evident amateurism detectable behind it all. An interesting and entertaining debut, but more a clever exercise in style than anything else.

Summary: David Lynch worship gone wrong
Review: Pi. The Kabballah. Math. Eraserhead -- D'OH!

Obviously Mr. Aronofsky went through a few too many intensely close viewings of Eraserhead, and somehow convinced himself he could do a 90's version of it ... only without any of the creativity, novelty, mood, eeriness, atmosphere, ingenuity, character, intesnsity, or soul of David Lynch. What "Pi" ends up being is a completely self-indulgent art school final project that should have received a B-.

The idea that the kabballah, the theory of Pi, the workings of the stock exchange, mathematics, chaos theory, and the computer revolution could somehow reveal the true face of God is a great one. But this film was so ham-handed that none of the possibilities were sufficently, if at all, explored. Everything was merely hinted at, and in the end, all that was left was a very weak character study intermingled with a bit of a film-noir detective flavor and an onanistic revery for the post-modern disjointed style of David Lynch.

The fact that this film was so highly touted upon it's release shows that the film world is so shallow that merely being NOT-Hollywood is sufficient to gain instant respect. See it if you must, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Summary: Eraserhead, Wax and Iron Man rolled into one
Review: This is definitely for non-mainstream tastes (i.e., if you thought Truman Show was good, you'll hate this movie). The music is GREAT (Orbital is one of my favorites), the visuals are hypnotic, and the story is quite thought-provoking. Ignore the nay-sayers below (worst movie ever? I think not.), this is a unique, interesting movie!

Summary: What if it's genius?
Review: Hauntingly brilliant. This movie at the same time shocked and touched me. I recommend it to those who are willing to be disturbed by the glaring reality and frighteningly paranoid symbolism. But sometimes we need to be disturbed...
