Review: This movie is darkly brilliant - the B&W, grainy camerawork really adds to the atmosphere.The story of obsession is one we can all relate to, and Max's descent into madness is brilliantly filmed and acted. Although the cults and corporations trying to steal Max's information are an interesting part of the story, it is the protagonist's internal conflicts that are the center of the film. The R rating is well deserved though, as the hallucination scenes are quite disturbing, and the images of a disembodied brain are positively creepy. I would suggest this one to people who can deal with a movie that is slow-paced in its storytelling, but fast-paced in the way it is shot. The plot is gripping, and the films dark tone will freak you out (esp. if you're on drugs, hint hint..) The extras are great, too...a music video, two trailers, two commentaries, some behind-the scenes footage, and some other stuff. If you've been raised on "Die Hard" and "Twister," this movie's not for you, however, if you're a fan of cerebral thrillers or the indie scene, it will knock you out. 11:15 - restate my assumptions...

Review: This film is a hauntingly accurate depiction of what it is like to be in a psychotic manic state. Anyone interested in mental illness needs to see this film. And anyone who has a mental disorder needs to see this film as well. You will see yourself on the screen.

Summary: Not for Parties
Review: I saw this movie with about 6 friends who came over for a DVD party. I bought the DVD based upon good reviews. However, the consensus of the group was that this movie SUCKED. We barely made it all the way through - and the ending is the worst part, I think. One other reviewer mentioned that you need to watch it several times to really get it. Ok, maybe, but don't see it with a group of people or you will all be staring at each other after it's over and then looking more pointedly at the person who picked it!

Summary: not science, just fiction
Review: it really irks me that every video store i go to is keeping this movie in the sci-fi section. it is *not* science fiction. the science elements pertain solely to math, which is *technically* a schience, but not one typically associated with the sci-fi genre. (and "Cube" doesnt count, simply because it sucked way too much to count). Moreover, this movie isnt really *about* math, not really. the math involved is a symbol, and could easily be replaced by, what, chemistry? physics? it doesnt matter. the film isnt about science. it is about, as Max so brilliantly put it, "what's between the numbers." it is about the exploration of man's modern ontological dilemma, and his search for a God-of-the-gaps in a world where all the gaps are quickly filling in. it is an exploration of one man's genius (a man who is *incidentally* a mathematician), and the disturbing tendancy of genius to couple itself with madness. the movie is about a search for the Truth, capital "T" there are no aliens, no spaceships, and for god's sake no beaming, phasers, or warp nacelles. there is just this obsessed guy and his compulsion to figure out what is going on, which is really all any of us are trying to do.

Summary: PI is absolutely the most wonderful movie yet...
Review: I have been enjoying PI for the past couple of years a couple of times a week, recently i saw Requim and it was also wonderful 5 stars on it too. but PI has a super soundtrack done by none other than the great Clint Mansell. if you have not gotten the movie or soundtrack, you are missing out on a great great experience!!!

Summary: Dark & Enigmatic
Review: Max Cohen is a mathematical genius. He can instantly calculate any sum he is asked. He is fascinated by numbers. He is on the verge of uncovering a code related to the stock market. Others are interested in his findings; a Kabbalah sect, who think he is discovering numbers releated to their holy text, and a powerful Wall Street film are on his trail. All the while, Max is being enveloped by his own paranoia and delusion with the world. Shot in black & white, this is an effective first feature from Aronofsky. The DVD is great. The menus have the pounding bass music from the film playing on them. The picture is a good transfer in 1.66:1 ratio, and the sound is excellent in Dolby surround 2.0. The extras are plentiful. There are two seperate commentaries from director and lead actor, both good. There's a documentary behind the scenes of the film. This shows the making the film on a tight budget, and Arononofsky receiving his best new director award at the Sundance Film Festival. There's some deleted scenes, a music video from one of the songs from the film, a trailer, and cast and crew bios. Overall, a dark, enigmatic little film, given an excellent DVD transfer.

Summary: Great film from up and coming director
Review: Darrin Aronofsky really made a name for himself after Pi debuted at Sundance to rave reviews. Made on an ultra low budget Aronofsky manages to piece together a fantastic film about a genius' struggle to live with his gift. I havn't seen Requim from a Dream yet, but from what I've heard Aronofsky seems to be establishing himself as a great director. Hopefully he'll also be able to save the batman series. A great DVD of an interesting film. Lots of extras and what I assume is a pretty good transfer, but I was unable to see the film in theaters so I don't know what the original has like because the DVD is extremely high contrast and grainy. Well worth a look.
