Summary: BEAUTIFUL/emotional
Review: I saw this in the seventh grade and didn't think it was so great until I got older and now that I understand it more and can relate to it more, I love it. It crosses racial boundaries because even people that aren't asian and went thru the "experience" love the movie. It explores the deepest relationship between mothers/daughters and all the struggles we go through together as women. Altho this movie is great,I have to say that in some ways this movie is biased against Chinese males, depicting them as immoral and selfish but this isn't all true. And in some aspect, it also depicts asian women as "naive and subservient" which also is not true. Men are more dominant in asian cultures, but I think the movie exaggerated a bit. Although the movie is stereotypical in ways, I still think it's great and will make you cry and cry a million times. If you ever had parents that you never had an affectionate, expressive relation with, you will love this movie because it will make you feel that no matter what you become in life, your parents are truly proud of you and will always love you altho this may sound corny! It's a great movie though.. You have to BUY it.

Summary: Excellent Movie
Review: The Joy Luck Club was a great movie. I own it and I have watched it many times. I found this movie to be very informal about Chinese culture. The storyline is excellent. The musical score truly made this film and was meant for this film. I even went out and bought the soundtrack by Rachel Portman. If you haven't seen it, then buy or rent it as soon as possible.

Summary: loved it
Review: I watched this movie with like 12 of my girlfriends. We're all chinese. After that we just couldn't stop talking about how the movie reminded us of things our own mothers would do. It was quite an experience. I know I'm biased in my views because I'm chinese. But it shouldn't take away anything from this well made and well acted movie. i've already watched this movie 10 times, 3 times in the theatre, 7 times on video. :-)

Summary: Fortune cookie say: Good movie!
Review: You definately don't have to be oriental to enjoy this movie! It is very well filmed and showcases different families and the life desicions they have all chosen. It examines the chinese culture and some of the traditions they have and the psychological affects it has on the women in this film. It has remarkable scenery and wonderful acting.

Summary: One of the Best Movies Ever...
Review: ... thanks to Amy Tan's wonderful novel, the great cast and fine direction. Every character is perfectly cast, the photography is captivating and the storyline moving and top class!

But ever wonder why the Oscars decided to nominate "The Joy Luck Club" in the Best Foreign Language Film category, instead of in the (more coveted) Best Picture category? I mean, "The Joy Luck Club" is a Hollywood movie and half or more of the dialogue are in the English language! Many of the cast members are also Asian Americans. Boggles the mind, doesn't it.. when you recall that the purely Italian language movie, "Life Is Beautiful" was nominated this year in the Best Picture category as well. I think "The Joy Luck Club" deserved a nomination in that category, at least.

Summary: The way of Chinese
Review: I first watched this movie in 1996.Last year,I watched it again and again. Each time,I viewed it,the different feeling I had.Especially, you can find out the way that Chinese parents treat their children. They seldom give them high praise in public, but keeping the deepest proud of their daughter(kids) at their heart not being shown up. It is unbelieveable and unacceptable in the western world, but, that is the way of Chinese,Chinese Parents.

Summary: A Mother-Daughter must see!
Review: This movie will mke you laugh, cry and think. It's not over powered by one or two actors, but instead is a fantastically written story with an all around strong cast. You won't be able to get over how easily you relate to the stories of misunderstanding, love, tragedy and hope here. I've seen this film at least 7 times, and every time I take something new from the film.

This is a great film to watch with sisters, mothers or just great friends. You won't help but make it one of your favourites too.

Summary: Uneven
Review: The cinematography was gorgeous in this movie, but the writing left something to be desired. The dialogue was unrealistic and preachy. It enforces stereotypes about Asian men, but the women don't fare much better. Waverly is a brittle, self-absorbed yuppie. Even more apalling was that a mother's drowning her baby was glibly excused because she had a nasty husband. Although I think that women should reclaim their connection to their mothers and to nature, the script needed a few rewrites. And Russel Wong can rough house with me any time.
