Summary: Robert De Niro - "I heard things"
Review: This must be De Niro's best movie ever. I liked De Niro's performance and he rightly deserved the best actor academy award. If you do not think De Niro is a great actor you will change your mind when you watch this. Just buy it cause you won't get bored of it when watching 4 or 5 times.

Summary: ooo, it's just such a good movie!
Review: Such a good movie... the greatest tradgity of all time was when it lost the academy award to the Ordinary People in 1980. This was the biggest tragedy of all time. However, this film reminds me of this film, "Two Lost Worlds (1950)" Same sort of conflict Man versus Himself throughout this film. The only reason why my rating was at 4 stars was because when I first purchased it the outer casing was slightly flawed. Other than that it is very suitable and I watch it over and over again along with all of my favorite french films from the 50's.

Summary: Fine cinema!
Review: After i viewed this movie, i sat still for about 30 minutes recalling the utter masterpiece that i had just witnessed. I have NEVER in my life seen acting like what was in this fine movie. Don't be fooled by what you see on the cover, this is not just some normal boxing movie. This movie is intense, hard to watch, painful, very graphic, very obscene(especially in lunguage), very surreal, and very violent. It has the most violent and gory boxing scenes ever captured in cinema, and is absolutely stunning for a boxing movie. Ranks up with Rocky. One of my favorites! Highly Reccomended!!!

Summary: You never got me down, Ray
Review: Yeah, still Scorsese's best, though "Goodfellas" gives it a run for its money. Stylistically unmatched and probably unmatchable -- this movie lives and breathes. It's a long movie because Scorsese has to take his (real-life!) story down to the end, the bitter end, the sad and sorry end. The only movie I prefer to this is "Eraserhead" (I like to laugh). Hmm. For a little while there, some great directors made some great black and white movies.

Review: Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, this 1980 academy award winner is a well-deserved cinematic classic. It is based on the true story of Jake LaMotta, a boxer whose bouts in the 1940s and 50s were legendary.Shot in black and white, with brutal close-ups of the punishing blows that fighters have to endure in the ring, the film, however, is not about boxing. Rather, it is about a man whose rage, violence, paranoia and jealously were the driving forces in his life. He abused his wife, picked fights with his brother and everyone else, and yet somehow portrayed the person of Jake LaMotta as a pitiful and very real character who the audience could relate to. We watch LaMotta through several years of his career, see his ups and downs and his demons within. The dialog is perfect New York. The details of the setting, right down to the crucifix over the bed and the glitz of the Cocacabana nightclub capture the subtleties of the times. Everything sizzles with realism. And what a performance DeNiro gives! No wonder he won an academy award! Every detail of his character is explored, from his eye movements and facial expressions to his expanding belly. He even gained weight to better depict the aging and increasingly emotionally self-destructive LaMotta. The wife, played by Cathy Moriarity, also has a demanding role. She's blond and beautiful with a coarse New York accent that underlines the gritty scene. Joe Pesci, as LaMotta's brother, is like a small raging bull himself, and the verbal and physical sparring between him and DeNiro ring with tension and fire. Applause to Martin Scorsese and the film editor for putting it all together! This is filmmaking at its very best. Don't miss it!

Summary: Best movie ever!
Review: There's really not much more to be said. This is my favorite movie of all time and I don't think anyone could disagree that Robert De Niro gave an astouding performance. The boxing scenes are one of a kind and the story of Jake La Motta is highly compelling or disgusting, however you look at it. One part of the movie that made it work so well that's not often mentioned is Paul Schrader's outstanding screenplay which helped to launch the trend towards "gritty realism" in Hollywood, along with Scorcese's other films, Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. Truly a monument in film making. See it.

Summary: A Powerful Film That Leaves a Tremendous Impact!
Review: A film brimming with fire and passion. THE quintessential Scorsese picture, his best film and surely the one he will be remembered by. A powerhouse film from the beginning credits to DeNiro's final 'I Coulda Been A Contenda' speech. DeNiro gives one of the best performances in film history, the physical transformation is astonishing but the emotional rhythm of his performance is also admirable. He captures the essence of LaMotta, a man who is insecure with himself and his sexuality and takes it off with his wife and with his opponents in the ring. The boxing sequences are nothing short of brilliant and they're technical marvels as well. Astonishing use of editing and beautifully brutal cinematography but also the sound editing is brilliant, Scorcese used cracking bulbs and squishing sponges for the punches, but also mixed in some animal cries to heighten the brutality of the sequences. DeNiro is probably the greatest actor of his generation and this is his best performance. He is a fearless actor that isn't afraid to give his heart and soul to the film and that is exactly what he does here, we don't see 'DeNiro playing another character' we see and hear Jake LaMotta. Joe Pesci is also great as LaMotta's brother, a flawless performance that could almost compare to DeNiro's. Cathy Moriarty is also devastating as LaMotta's young wife, he was only 19 at the time and her transformation to an adult Vicky is remarkable. Powerhouse direction by Scorsese and a gem of a script by Paul Schrader. One of the best films of all time and without a doubt the best movie of the 1980's. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 10!

Summary: Not a wise choice...
Review: Sure, there are great actors early in their careers, but it's a very uneventful and disturbing movie. Plenty of bad language. No plot worthy of your time. As for my father and I, it's a "Two Thumbs Down" kind of movie.
