Rating: Summary: American History X Review: In this riveting movie about skinheads, gangs, and prison bars, you will see an awesome portrayal by Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, a killer skinhead leader. He has a brother that is on the path to the hellified prison bars, just like his older brother Derek, Danny will have to face many obstacles. This is one of the best films of the year. It is perfect in every way. Buy it right here, and you will be glad, because it is worth every green bill.
Rating: Summary: I saw it 7 months ago, and still can't get it out of my mind Review: I remember being home in NJ and seeing a preview for "American History X" while at another movie with my younger sister. I immediately knew I wanted to see it, and was there at the movie theater in Harvard Square the night after it opened, October 31st. Some parts of it were hard to watch, as they should have been, and the theater was absolutely silent through the final scene and closing credits. I was really, really disappointed that it didn't do better than it did in the theaters (it never even opened in the part of NJ I'm from), but I felt much better when Edward Norton received a much-deserved Academy Award nomination as Best Actor for his compelling, heart-wrenching turn as Derek Vinyard. I'll never forget this movie as long as I live, and if you didn't see it in the theaters, make sure you go out and rent it.
Rating: Summary: GREAT film Review: This is one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time. Norton gave an amazing performance (he should have won the OSCAR). This film should be required viewing in all high schools. It shows the true horrors of racism and just how ugly hatered makes us.
Rating: Summary: Almost perfect Review: AMX is a brilliant movie. 99% of this movie is absolutely flawless. The best part about this movie is that the brutality is real and believable. So many times in the 1990's "directors" (and I use that term loosely) try to be as brutal and shocking as possible (re: Quentin Tarantino) at the expense of a viable plot. AMX, and Tony Kaye, use this brutality as a real expression. I've never seen anything as horrible as the curbing scene, and nothing more frightening then Edward Norton's smile afterwards. The one scene I hate with this movie is when Norton is being interviewed by the TV camera after his father's death. This scene is completely unbelievable when the reporter says, "Isn't that a question more of class then race?" or something along those lines. That one scene is a little too transparent. Overall, American History X is one of the decades' best films. It's up there with Silence of the Lambs, Shawshank Redemption, Welcome to the Dollhouse, and Schindler's List.
Rating: Summary: A great, reallife film with great actors Review: I thought this movie was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Edward Norton in this movie looks so good, better than ever I think and, Edward Furlong doesn't look bad himself. I think they both do an excellent job and hope to see them in more great movies like this. I also think Edward Norton looks very hot with his head shaved and hope in other films I see more of his beautiful body. If it's possible can you find a way to send me an autograph of Edward Norton to me?! Ashley Adams, Po box 875046, Wasilla, Ak 99687 thankyou for listening to my thoughts on the movie.
Rating: Summary: ROBERTO WHO Review: After seeing this movie I could not believe Ed Norton did not win the Oscar...This was one of the best performances I have seen since Bob's Taxi Driver...I could not believe how intense the movie was and I must say it was all acting. Norton was brilliant. The racial rehtorics were almost a backdrop of a story about a family getting through a crisis....Must See
Rating: Summary: A great movie, sad, some disturbing violent scences. Review: This was a great movie which shows the consequences of racism and hate. There are some violently disturbing scenes and it probably was on the verge of an NC-17 rating because it had some sex at the beginning, a lot of profanity, very violent scenes, a lot of hate and racial topics (of course-), full-male frontal nudity, and a prison rape. If you can stand all that, its a great movie and I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Norton should have gotten the Oscar Review: "American History X"...with a name like that, it automatically piqued my interest. I popped the tape into the VCR and was riveted to the screen. This movie had me laughing and crying with the characters; it made me feel a myriad of emotions, both good and bad, since it portrays both sides of the racial issue. Rent this movie, and watch it again and again. You won't regret it, I promise! Edward Norton's portrayal of Derek Vinyard was excellent, as was Edward Furlong (Derek's younger brother Danny, who is being drawn into the realm of the skinheads whom Derek led before being sent to prison). RENT IT!
Rating: Summary: Fantatic performances, as a neo-nazi starves for release. Review: Danny Vinnard, who becomes a neo-nazi and begins to rattle his way through his hatred. Is sentenced to three years in prison for intentionally murdering a man who was trying to jack his car, thenwhen he experiences how life is thats when he begins to open his eyes to life and make sure his younger brother(Edward Furlong) doesn't go through the path. With very powerful performances by Edward Norton and by Edward Furlong. This one is high on my list of favorites. A must see.
Rating: Summary: Great film, but tainted with leftism Review: This is a superb, gritty, realistic film, but out of curiosity I read every review here and not one person noticed how confused this movie is. What produces these neo-Nazi skinheads? The film's leftist message is the obviously "conservative" father passed on his dislike of such liberal programs as affirmative action to his son. It's as if his father hadn't primed him then he would not have popped after his father's murder. Where else did he get the rant he gave to the TV reporter if not from his father? What the film completely fails to address that if it is liberalism/leftism that produces such resentment then leftism is the cause of the resentment! Then it's the cause of the skinheads, because liberalism divides people among primitive racial, tribal, ethnic lines. If the film had been honest it would have placed the blame where it belongs--liberals, not conservatives. Still, this is a great film. Just be aware it places the blame in the wrong place.
