Rating: Summary: More than a good film..... Review: I live in austria and have seen the film in the cinema , and there was a skinhead-neo-nazi-gang watchting the film too . As it ends they was less the room laughing , but one of them was sitting with his girlfriend a long time after the film ends , and i saw in his eyes that he was thinking about that what he is , and that what he do . And when this film can bring one of ten , one of hundret or one of thausends to think ten minutes about his beeing right , than its more than a good film .
Rating: Summary: Edward Norton's Best Since Primal Fear!!! Review: It was a great and exciting movie, if you are looking for a good movie with some sadness in it this is the one for you...
Rating: Summary: EDWARD NORTON'S FINEST PERFORMANCE! Review: His role in this film is Oscar worthy. A very powerful drama demonstrating how some people really feel about racism. Norton was perfect for the role as a leader which was splendidly acted. Great story with a deep message of hatred and how wrong these feelings are. The film shows life's lessons on what comes around goes around. One lesson to be learned is that violence and hatred will come back to haunt you. Norton Jr. trying to turn his brother's life around was a turning point in the film with a sad ending. THIS IS A MUST SEE MOVIE BY ANYBODY!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I can't understand why the director was so revolted at hisglorious movie. It clearly defines our culture as a hateful andstubborn one . This movie is totally on the mark. And Norton's performance is fantastic. The script is intelligent and well written. The cinematography is beautiful. The movie is an accomplishment in film making. The ending is so shocking and heart-breaking you will be moved to tears. Trust me the movie is great.
Rating: Summary: manipulative and childish Review: This film is adept, although not masterful, at the manipulation of issues of race. In particular, it seeks to discredit mainstream white America's distaste for racial preferences (a.k.a. "affirmative action") by closely associating it with bigots, racists, losers and Nazis. As an example of this rhetorical maneuver, if I were to say that Hitler had the idea of producing a cheap car, I would be correct, but the mere fact of stating that Hitler had the idea makes it seem less attractive, does it not? The same occurs in the movie, when Derek's father berates racial preferences in one moment, then spouts bigoted comments and uses the N-word in the next. However, I don't want to bang too hard on the movie. It was well-intentioned, in a 90s liberal kind of way. To that end, one of the most enjoyable -- and laughable -- aspects of the movie is its childlike belief that education (or reeducation at Chino State Prison, in Derek's case) can change anyone. That's nonsense, of course, since otherwise we all would be believing and living the NEA-bred superficial mealy-mouthed left-wing rubbish the public schools have fed us for the last fifty or sixty years. But of course (re)education doesn't change peoples' basic nature; hell, the Chinese took a serious shot at it 1966-1970 and look what it did to them. So enjoy this movie for what it is: a superficial, slickly violent, uneven morality play. But don't for a second think it accurately reflects reality.
Rating: Summary: The movie is great. Hardcore, upfront Honesty! Review: The movie is a no holes barred, look into the racist problem in our society today. And how prejudice can be past on. It's a awsome movie, lots of f*******n bad language and violence. But it is a kick a**, in your face movie.
Rating: Summary: best movie ever Review: In the first few minutes of the movie, I thought this would be just another violent movie about rasicsm. However, as the movie progressed I was drawn to the various hidden themes that the movie had to offer. I also loved the way black and white was used to represent past scenes and color was used to represent present. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you really are missing a valuable lesson.
Rating: Summary: Very, very touching !!! Review: Norton's outstanding performance of a former skinhead trying to straighten up his life is one of the most touching parts I have ever seen in a film. It is rather a piece of art than a movie about Nazi related violence and wrong attitudes including a change of heart!
Rating: Summary: I can't get this movie out of my head. Review: American History X is one of those rare movies that you are unable to forget. I just finished watching it yesterday and it's overwhelmed me. The reason it sticks with you is because violence like this does invade the lives of real people--not just these characters. This is the best movie I've seen in a long time. Edward Norton is unbelievable.
Rating: Summary: One of the best new movies... Review: Edward Norton is by far the best actor of this generation. The depth in his eyes alone during some of the scenes in this movie are worth the price of admission. Beverly D'Angelo, Elliot Gould and Edward Furlong are phenomenal and American History X will keep you glued to the screen. All thumbs, way up on this one. It will make you think, it should make you sad and it might make you cry. It is very well done. Norton deserved the Oscar. This, is as good as it gets and it really shows you that life isn't always beautiful.
